1 INSTRUCTOR: THOMAS ARPASI REND LAKE COLLEGE CAD INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER-AIDED DRAFTING DWG#10 - IN-CLASS 3D ACTIVITY 1
2 CAD Drawing 10 - In-Class 3D Modeling Goal: Quickly model a chess like setting consisting of only pawns. Creating the others in one class period isn t a likely scenario. So, to give a better overall view, the modeling is kept to a minimum. Save the good stuff for the 3D class. 3D CAD uses are endless and affect all major industries. AutoCAD is versatile and does both 2D & 3D. It is an multi-purpose software. LT has now 3D capability. Only full or educational versions. AutoCAD can do simple 3D walkthroughs and render with realistic materials. Want more, take the 3D class. Open the AutoCAD template file with the RLC titleblock drawn in paperspace. Switch to modelspace and begin constructing the 2D profiles used to generate solid models. Make sure that it is noted that closed polylines should always be used in 3D modeling. The result is a solid. If the path is open, the result is surface. Which, with the newest release, it isn t impossible to use and convert to a solid. Unfortunately, errors sometime result during the conversion. Closed polylines are the way to go. Refer to the profile and features that will be applied. With this exercise, extrude and revolve will be used. Load the AutoCAD 3D workspace and showcase how the Ribbon changes. So does the right-click contextual menu. Create the 2D drawings shown on page 4. Put together appropriate multi-colored layers. For the Pawn, only draw half of the profile. Convert one line to and polyline, join them all, and select close to bridge the top and bottom creating a closed profile. Will generate a solid when revolved. Put the object on its own layer. Revolve, snap two points top and bottom for the axis and revolve 360 degrees. When 3D solids are generated using 2D profiles, the newly created solid will be put on the current layer in use. Pick the solid and pick the Rotate Gizmo from the subject panel Home tab. Anything select will active this interactive gizmo. Select a side view of the 3D pawn using the View Cube. Select the green or Y axis with Ortho (F8) on to rotate upright. I interactive gizmo use, prepare them for 3D Studio max. Refer to Gizmo. Use Steering wheel (bottom status bar) and orbit to show off model. May also use the View Cube in the upper right hand corner. Produces orho/ iso view. Type PLAN to get back to top view (0,0,0) or home on View Cube. Create the board pieces shown. Draw the outside rectangle using relative coordinates (@x,x). Offset for perimeter. Draw on rectangle in the lower left hand corner using endpoint osnap and relative coordinates. Copy it once to the right. Put all objects on appropriate layers. Copy the pair using endpoint snap and create the two rows. Copy the two rows and fill the board. Select the whole board and extrude.5. make sure to extrude each kind of object to its correct layer that is current. Leaving Ortho on is good idea when next moving the pawn into place on the lower left side dark blue square. Use the orthographic side views from the view cube. Move into place in the top view and raise it up or down in the side view. Scale it down 20 % to fit the square better. Switch visual style to 3D shaded. Showcase all of the visual styles. 2
3 REVISED: FALL 2010 CAD Drawing 10 - In-Class 3D Modeling Array the pawn using a rectangular array: 2 Rows, 8 columns, 1.5 X & Y spacing, preview and apply. Switch to Plan view. Select the pawns and mirror a copy to the other side using the midpoint of the board as an axis to mirror by. Put the new objects on the corresponding layer. Orbit and view from different views. Notice default lighting. Create a rendering, print it out, turn it in for credit. Still a vast world of 3D to build on. Walk them through it. Take a class period. Only 2 3D commands were used really, extrude and revolve. 3
