1 Chapter 3 Uncertainty and Vagueness

2 Motivation In most images the objects are not precisely defined, e.g. Landscapes, Medical images etc. There are different aspects of uncertainty involved that need to understood if an image is Interpreted Searched Analyzed. We will shortly discuss the aspects of interest in our context.

3 Fuzzy Sets (1) Fuzzy sets do not represent properties of yes-or-no character but of more or less character. E.g. in medicine: More or less pathological Small, normal or big size More or less oval More or less in the middle. The degrees have to given to the system. They are not absolute but depend on the user. Some regard an object as big what others find normal.

4 Fuzzy Sets (2): Formalisms Fuzzy sets are generalizations of ordinary ( crisp ) sets. Suppose U is some (ordinary) set. A fuzzy subset X of U is defined by a function µ X : U [0,1] Notation: X f U For y in U µ X (y) is called the degree of membership of y to X and µ X is the membership function of X. Example: X = Young_Customer, µ X (Bill) = 0.5 if Bill is of age 32 This is easily generalized to n-ary relations. A possible interpretation of fuzzy degrees is as generalized truth values, but such an interpretation does not always make sense.

5 Fuzzy Sets (3) In fuzzy logic and set theory many classical notions are generalized. A fuzzy partition of U into n fuzzy subsets is given by membership functions µ 1 (x),...,µ n (x) such that (µ i 1 i n) = 1. In particular, disjoint means now disjoint to some degree. A fuzzy classifier for such a partition is mapping c f : U [ 0, 1] n such that for c f (x) = (y 1 (x),...,y n (x)) we have ( y i (x) 1 i n) = 1.

6 Fuzzy Sets (4) Fuzzy equivalence relations are reflexiv,symmetric and satisfy E (x,y) supz (inf (E (x,z), E (z,y) ). Fuzzy equality E is a special fuzzy equivalence relation satisfying (1) E(x,x) = 1, (2) E(x,y) = E(y,x), (3) E(x,y) + E(y,z) -1 E(x,z) A weakening of fuzzy equivalence is a similarity measure sim): SIM f V: = U x U, µ SIM (x 1, x 2 ): = sim (x 1, x 2 ) Similarity measures are generalized measures

7 Example This is a fuzzy partition: There is an area where high and low fever overlap. 1 Low fever High fever In the intersection area: What is the decision, high or low? Rationality principle: The one with highest degree of membership. There is one point where both decisions can be made.

8 Spatial Regions (1) Spatial regions are typical candidates for uncertainty reasoning in the context of images. Vagueness can be introduced in several ways. Fuzzy definition of spatial areas, e.g. Up right, in the middle, at north west, at the size of the eyes,... Fuzzy-relations between areas, e.g. (overlaps(a,b)) = 0.8 Such fuzzy relations can be applied to crisp as well as to fuzzy areas. Using defuzzification (e.g. using thresholds) one can obtain from such vague area descriptions again sharp areas. Such techniques can also be used for the one dimensional case, i.e. temporal reasoning.

9 Spatial Regions (2) The fuzzy interpretation of spatial relations may depend on the intended use: a c b Question: Is b more right of a then c is? This depends on the importance of the second coordinate. A possibility is e.g. to use the angle function right of : to describe the membership a

10 Machines and Humans: Formal and Informal Definitions In principle, formal definitions required by a machine can never be totally coincident with the informal meaning used by a human of some concept. Formally defined concepts have an exact character while informal notions have an approximate and fuzzy character. This means: There are degrees to which a property applies to a picture. The degrees depend on an agreement of what is important, what is pathological etc.

11 Application: Image Interpretation A 2-dimensional image can contain information about a 3-dimensional situation. The identification of the semantics depends on spatial knowledge: Absolute positions of objects: In the upper left corner there is an object X Relative positions: Object X is left of object Y Size of objects (again absolute and relative) Knowledge about texture, color etc. Example: Medical images. The knowledge is used to distinguish normal objects from pathological ones.

12 Informally Defined Objects (1) Formal definitions are mostly restricted to considerations in exact sciences. In other sciences and in dayly life communication most objects do not have a formal definition. Objects occurring on a medical image also do not have a formal definition. There are tacit and informal agreements in a certain community which make it possible that the degree of inexactness involved here can be tolerated. This becomes a problem if images are interpreted differently in different areas.

13 Informally Defined Objects (2) In the context of employing computers as a medium for communication the situation is different. There are now two types of agents who communicate and have to understand each other: Human agents Software agents Humans can easily (at least in principle) understand software agents because they have themselves defined their languages. The other direction provides foundational difficulties: One needs of formal approach to informally presented concepts and objects.

14 Informally Defined Objects (3) Informal objects are often used for describing personal taste. In medicine they play an essential role for diagnosis. In one and the same hospital group medical experts can often come to an agreement about the meaning of an informal notion. This not always the case in different hospitals or countries. E.g. something may be typical in tropical countries but not in other regions.

15 Informal - Formal : The Ordering Principle A Turing test How to compare a formal and an informal concept? Use orderings! Suppose there is an ordering < with the concept C associated which expresses more typical or more dangerous : <: two versions: formal and informal Informal human version of C goal Formal version of C The goal is that when variations of the arguments of < are presented: The human says up if and only if the formal system says up

17 Advantages of the Test The validity of the equivalence of formal and informal concepts can be effectively validated by experiments. If there are several orderings involved this can be done for all of them. The search for a formal counterpart of an informal concept can be performed in an approximative way and partial validation is possible. The formal partial ordering is what has to be learned The learning process is an approximation process in order to perform the Turing test sufficiently well.

18 Probabilities Probabilities are standard in medicine. If probabilities are obtained from studying images (e.g. images in archives) the images should be analyzed by a machine. This requires that the machine understands the images to some degree. Example: How often do patients with a disease X have an abnormal size of the aorta?

19 Areas of Interest The idea is that the attention of the medical doctor should be focussed to such an area where something unusual takes place. Such areas cannot be defined precisely. There are two competing conditions: The area should cover all that may be interesting The area should be small and simple. The uncertainty is caused because one cannot easily define the term interesting.
