Chapter 7 Learning Objectives Chapter 7 Object Snaps and Autotracking JULY 7, 2009 Set running object snap modes for continuous use. Use object snap overrides for single point selections. Select appropriate object snaps for various drawing tasks. Use the AutoSnap features to speed up point specifications. Use AutoTrack to locate points relative to other points in a drawing. Object Snap Object snap is a useful AutoCAD tools. It improves your drafting speed and accuracy through the concept of snapping. Object snap modes identify the object snap point. The AutoSnap feature is on by default and displays snap mode information while you draw using object snaps. Command: OS or OSnap F3 to toggle on Or icon on status bar Object Snap Object Snap 1

Running Object Snaps Running object snaps are on by default and may be the quickest way to use object snap. By default, the Endpoint, Center, Intersection, and Extension running object snap modes are active. The quickest way to activate or deactivate running object snap modes is to right-click on the Object Snap or Object Snap Tracking button on the status bar to display the shortcut menu. Then select the running object snaps you want to turn on or off. F11 will toggle object snap tracking on and off You can also set running object snap modes using the Object Snap tab in the Drafting Settings dialog box. Running Object Snap You can also set running object snap modes using the Object Snap tab in the Drafting Settings dialog box. The Drafting Settings dialog box can be displayed from the keyboard or the menu browser or by rightclicking on any of the status bar toggle buttons and selecting the Settings menu option. The Drafting Settings dialog box can also be accessed by typing Dsettings, SE or DS at the command prompt DSettings Object Snap Override Enter an object snap override when you are prompted to select a point and the active running object snaps are conflicting with each other, or the desired snap is not running. Object snap overrides allow you to pick a location on an existing object that corresponds only to the selected object snap mode. After you select the point, the running object snap modes are reactivated Object Snap Override Object Snap Override After you access a tool, the preferred technique for activating an object snap override is to use the Object Snap shortcut menu. To use this method, press and hold the [Shift] key and then right-click to display the shortcut menu. It may also be accessed by right clicking on the object snap icon on the status bar. Ri ht Cli k Right Click to access Object Snap Override 2

Lab Activity Type OS to access Object snap settings Check End point, Mid point, and Intersection Create rectangle Use Extension osnap override to create another rectangle adjacent and inline with the previously created rectangle Temporary Track Point Snap Using temporary track point is similar to using the extension object snap mode. The main difference is that with temporary track point, you actually pick points of reference, instead of acquiring points as with the extension object snap mode. Example: temporary tracking can be used to place a circle at the center of a rectangle. Though not necessary, temporary track points are usually selected using running object snaps or object snap overrides. Lab Activity- Temporary Tracking Snap From Create a rectangle Use temporary tracking to locate the midpoint of one of the vertical lines, and the midpoint of one of the horizontal lines. The point where these two lines cross will be the center. Create a circle using this center. The From point object snap allows you to locate a point from a specified reference base point using a coordinate entry technique such as relative coordinate, polar coordinate, or direct distance entry. To use Snap from simply enter the coordinates relative to the snap point. Snap From Example: A circle may be created a given distance away from the midpoint of this line Object Snap Tracking Object snap tracking has two requirements: running object snaps must be active and the crosshairs must pause over the selected point long enough to acquire the point. Object snap tracking mode is only available for points selected by the currently active object snap modes. When running object snaps are active, all selected object snap modes are available for object snap tracking. 3

Object Snap Tracking To enable object snap tracking, pick the Object Snap Tracking button on the status bar, or press the [F11] function key, or use the Object Snap Tracking On (F11) check box in the Object Snap tab of the Drafting Settings dialog box. Polar Tracking Click the icon on the status bar, or press the [F10] function key, or use the Polar Tracking On (F10) check box in the Polar Tracking tab of the Drafting Settings dialog box to toggle polar tracking on and off. Polar Tracking When polar tracking mode is turned on, the crosshairs snaps to preset incremental angles, if a point is being located relative to another point Polar tracking vectors are displayed as dotted lines whenever the crosshairs aligns with any of these preset angles. To set incremental angles, use the Polar Tracking tab in the Drafting Settings dialog box. The Drafting Settings dialog box can be displayed by rightclicking on any of the status bar toggle buttons and selecting the Settings option, or typing DS, Dsettings or SE The Polar Angle Settings area sets the desired polar angle increments. Use the Increment angle drop-down list to select the angle increments at which polar tracking vectors occur. The preset angle increments available in the Polar Angle Settings area of the Drafting Settings dialog box are also available in the shortcut menu displayed when you right-click on the Polar Tracking button on the status bar. Polar Tracking Polar Tracking Polar Tracking Custom Angles You can define specific polar tracking angles by picking the New button in the Polar Angle Settings area. Type a new angle value in the text box that appears in the Additional angles window. Pick the New button each time you want to add another angle. Additional i angles are used together with the increment angle setting when you use polar tracking. Only the specific additional angle you enter is recognized, not each increment of the angle. Use the Delete button to remove angles from the list. Make the additional angle(s) inactive by unchecking the Additional angles check box. You can define specific polar tracking angles by picking the New button in the Polar Angle Settings area. Type a new angle value in the text box that appears in the Additional angles window. Up to 10 additional angles may be added Click NEW to add additional angle increments 4

Polar Tracking Absolute versus Relative Polar Tracking Absolute versus Relative The Polar Angle measurement setting determines whether the polar snap increments are constant or relative to the previous segment. If Absolute is selected, the polar snap angles are measured from the base angle of 0 set for the drawing. If Relative to last segment is selected, each increment angle is measured from a base angle established by the previously drawn segment. Lab Activity Draw a Line that is 45 degrees above the horizontal. Create a new polar tracking increment of 12 degrees Set the polar tracking measurement setting to relative. Create a line from the end of the newly created 45 degree inclined line. Observe how the angleis measured. Change the angular measurement to absolute and create another line from the end of the inclined line and observe how the polar tracking angle is measured Polar Tracking with Polar Snaps Polar tracking can also me used with polar snaps and predetermined length increment. The desired angle and length increments are established in the Snap and Grid tab of the Drafting Settings dialog box. Access grid/ snap settings by right clicking on grid icon. Enable polar snap, set polar snap, snap x and y intervals to.5000 Create a pattern similar to the one at right using snap mode and.500 inch segments Lab Activity Polar Tracking with Polar Snaps To activate polar snap, pick the PolarSnap button in the Snap type & style area of the dialog box. Picking this button activates the Polar spacing area and deactivates the Snap area. The length of the polar snap increment is set in the Polar distance: box. If the Polar distance: setting is 0, the polar snap distance will be the orthogonal snap distance Note Polar tracking may not be used when in ortho mode. 5

Lab Assignment Chapter 8 Construction Tools and Multiview Drawings Drawing Problems, pages , 7-1, 7-2,7-4, and 7-9 Use the OFFSET tool to draw parallel lines and curves. Mark points on objects at equal lengths using the DIVIDE tool. Set designated increments on an existing object using the MEASURE tool. Create construction lines using the XLINE and RAY tools. Create orthographic multiview drawings and auxiliary views. Offset Tool Command: Offset or O The OFFSET tool is one of the most common geometric construction tools. Use the OFFSET tool to form parallel lines and polylines. For example, existing lines or polylines can be offset to construct the thickness of architectural floor plan walls. Existing circles, arcs, and curves can be offset to form concentric objects. Offset Tool The best way to use the OFFSET tool is to enter an offset value at the Specify offset distance or Through/Erase/Layer] <current>: prompt. The last offset distance used, is the default and is shown in brackets. For example, if you want to draw two parallel circles a distance of.1 unit apart, access the OFFSET tool, and at the Specify offset distance or [Through/Erase/Layer] <current>: prompt, enter a value of.1. Pick the circle you want to offset, and then pick the side of the circle on which the offset occurs Offset Tool Once the OFFSET tool has been used it remains active, allowing you to pick another object to offset using the same offset distance. When you are finished using the tool, press the [Enter] key, the [Esc] key or the space bar, or choose the Exit option. If you do not know the offset value, but two reference points exist in the drawing area, you can pick a first point and then a second point instead of typing an offset value. Offsetting - Erasing the Original Object When you offset an object, you may want to remove the original object. Instead of offsetting the object and then erasing the source object, you can use the Erase option of the OFFSET tool to erase the source object. Initiate the OFFSET tool, enter the Erase option, and choose Yes at the Erase source object after offsetting? Prompt to erase the source object. The Yes option remains as the default until it is changed to No. Be sure to change this option back to No if you do not want the source offset object 6

Offsetting - Erasing the Original Object Enter E to erase the source object Changing the Layer of the Offset Object The Layer option of the OFFSET tool allows you to place the offset object on the current layer. For example, if the offset source object is on the Electrical layer and the offset object needs to be placed on the Lighting layer, this can be done during the offset operation if Lighting is the current layer. After initiating the OFFSET tool, enter the Layer option and choose Current at the Enter layer option for offset objects prompt to create the offset object on the current layer. The Current option remains the default until it is changed to Source Changing the Layer of the Offset Object Offsetting Multiple Times Type L to put offset object on current layer and enter c for current and s for source After the object to offset has been selected, the Multiple option can be used to offset an object more than once with the same distance between the objects without reselecting the object to offset. Initiate the OFFSET tool, specify the offset distance, and pick the source object. You can then select the Multiple option and begin picking to specify the offset direction. Point Tool Points are useful for identifying specific locations on a drawing and for marking positions on objects. You can draw points anywhere on the screen using the POINT tool. Once you access the POINT tool, you can pick or type coordinates to place points. The POINT tool has two variations: Single Point and Multiple Points. Command: Point or PO The point style may be selected from 20 different styles. Command: DDPTYPE Point Tool 7

To place a single point object and then exit the POINT tool, access the POINT tool using keyboard entry or select the Single Point option from the Point menu in the menu browser. To draw multiple points without exiting the POINT tool, use the Multiple Points button on the ribbon or the Multiple Point option from the Point submenu 8
