1 New York City College of Technology The City University of New York Department of Communication Design Course Description : An introduction to computer 3D modeling, rendering and animation using the Maya software environment. Students learn basic tools and techniques for building models and scenes, rendering them with surfaces and basic keyframe animation with simple joint hierarchies. While exploring 3D design aesthetics, the course emphasizes the practical and technical features of the software. 2 cl hr, 2 lab hrs, 3 cr. Prerequisites : COMD 2400 or MTEC Course Objectives : INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES ASSESSMENT WEEKS APPLIED For the successful completion of this Evaluation methods course, students should be able to: and criteria : Use the Maya interface to create 3D models and animation. 1, 8 Use Primitive modeling forms to create more complex models. Create simple 3D surface models. Use Meshes Tools to create polygonal models

2 Build a 3D scene in Maya. Apply computer generated lights and shadows to a 3D scene. Render a 3D scene to a still graphic. Apply texture maps to a 3D surface. Explain what UV texture space does. Understand how to create and apply texture maps. Create basic Keyframe animation. Explain how the Graph Editor works. Use simple joints and hierarchy of joints to animate a non-deforming Use a Motion Path or Flow Path to animate an object. Only two absences may be allowed. After two absences, a student 3

4 may be withdrawn because of unsatisfactory attendance (code WU). Students arriving after the roll is taken will be marked late. Students may be notified at the earliest opportunity in class after they have been absent or late. After being absent two times or equivalent (2 lateness = 1 absence), a student may be asked to withdraw from the class (code W before the College drop deadline) or may be withdrawn from the class (code WU).
