3 Mass Lab - Part 1 Today you will compare the sugar content of several brands of gum. Each groups will chew one brand of gum. Then we will compare class data/brands in Part 2. Done by Calculation! 4 Mass Lab Part2 Now we will collect class data and make some comparisons among brands of gum. Brand Mass of Sugar in One Piece of Gum 1. Which gum would your dentist recommend chewing this gum? Why? 2. What assumption is made about the change in mass of the gum before and after chewing? Explain whether you think this is a valid assumption. 3. How would the results be affected if there was a lot of saliva on the chewed pieces of gum?

5 Volume of Liquids Volume Lab - Part 1 Finding the volume of liquids, regular shaped solids, and irregular shaped solids. We will be using graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids and other objects. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder pictured here? ml What causes the meniscus? Answer: A concave meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides. **Not all graduated cylinders have marks for each 1mL. Some are for every 5mL, some 2mL, and even some 0.5mL or 0.2mL!! A quick way to determine what each line on the cylinder is to: 1. Find how many ml are in the gap between labeled lines. 2. Then, divide by the number of lines shown. Here s an example: 60 Step 1) 60mL - 40mL = 20mL Step 2) 20mL / 10lines = 2mL/line For this example, each line is worth 2mL Go around the room to the various graduated cylinders of colored water. 6 Volume Lab - Part 2 Finding the volume of liquids, regular shaped solids, and irregular shaped solids. Volume of Rectangular Solids We can measure the volume of 3D rectangular objects using the formula: length x width x height = volume Practice on these three pictures: 6cm 20cm 8cm 6cm 6cm 7cm 3cm 35cm But Wait! I thought volume was measured in Liters... It is!! A cubic centimeter is equal to one ml. 3 Practice measuring the objects provided. 7 Volume Lab - Part 3 Finding the volume of liquids, regular shaped solids, and irregular shaped solids. Volume of Irregular Shaped Solids We can measure the volume of irregulars objects using water displacement. Practice: 2) Amount of H2O with object = 1) Amount of H2O without object = -- 3) Difference is the Volume = When doing the math, always subtract the amount of water without the object from the amount with the object.
