PRELIMINARY When installing the system, it is entirely fitted to the specific circumstances in the shop. This is called the Calibration of the Ikélo. It is of the utmost importance that the measuring device is handled with care in order to keep these calibrated settings up-to-date. In that respect the relative position of the camera head is very important. If one suspects this has altered (if for instance a customer has bumped into the camera), a technician has to be contacted right away. The technician has then to perform the necessary checks to insure further use of the system. As long as this check has not been done the output of the measuring device can no longer be guaranteed. The Definition : cal i brate Tr.v. cal i brat ed, cal i brat ing, cal i brates 1. To check, adjust, or determine by comparison with a standard (the graduations of a quantitative measuring instrument):calibrate a thermometer. 2. To determine the caliber of (a tube). 3. To make corrections in; adjust: calibrated the polling procedures to ensure objectivity....and according to Wikipedia : Calibration is a comparison between measurements one of known magnitude or correctness made or set with one device and another measurement made in as similar a way as possible with a second device. The device with the known or assigned correctness is called the standard. The second device is the unit under test, test instrument, or any of several other names for the device being calibrated. The formal definition of calibration by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures is the following: "Operation that, under specified conditions, in a first step, establishes a relation between the quantity values with measurement uncertainties provided by measurement standards and corresponding indications with associated measurement uncertainties (of the calibrated instrument or secondary standard) and, in a second step, uses this information to establish a relation for obtaining a measurement result from an indication." Why calibrating : The Ikélo is an optical device which has to be learned certain standards. The learning of these standards (kg, cm, light...) is called calibrating the system. The light situation of all the Ikélo systems for instance will be different in each shop an Ikélo-system is used. Therefore the system has to be thought the conditions it will have to work under. On the other hand it will also have to be thought how much weighs one kilogram and how high is for instance 50 centimeter. This calibration is therefore of the utmost importance and it has to be done seriously and with great precision. The correct future use of the Ikélo will depend on it. Ikélo V4.4.x Calibration Procedure 4
When do we calibrate : - Definitely at the first start-up of the Ikélo system. When first taking the Ikélo system out of its packing the first thing to do is to calibrate the system. - When moving the system When the system is moved for instance from one shop to another, or even when it is moved within the same shop, it is needed to re-calibrate the system. This has to be done because at least the light conditions will be different. On the other hand it is also necessary to check if no vital parts of the device have been broken during the move. - Each year It is important to check the system at least once a year. This is a part of the maintenance procedure of Custom8. Once a year we want to make sure all the standards we have introduced to the Ikélo system are still properly installed. We cannot take the risk that at the certain moment consumers get a wrong bed-proposal just because the system is not functioning properly. - When indicated When starting up the program you will see, among other things, the picture shown at the right : As long as the arrow is in the green area, the calibration is fine and you can continue using the measuring system as before. If however the arrow is in the red area it is time to perform a calibration routine. As a general rule you can schedule one at least once a year. Ikélo V4.4.x Calibration Procedure 5
SOME IMPORTANT REMARKS UP FRONT 1. There is a TIME DIFFERENCE between China and Europe of about 6 hours. Be aware of this difference and do not neglect it. Sometimes it is even possible to use it in your advantage. If you for instance would calibrate just before the shop closes and you then send the calibration file to Europe, the people from Custom8 will still be working. They can then verify the calibration and return the calibration file to you. You will find the file the morning after when the shop opens. When you follow this procedure the annoyance for the customers will be minimal. Be aware of the following time-table : China Europe Shop opening in China 08:00 Night in Europe 02:00 Noon in China 12:00 Still asleep 06:00 Afternoon 18:00 Noon in Europe 12:00 <== Ideal timing Shop closing 22:00 Afternoon 16:00 <== Ideal timing Night in China 23:00 Work end in Europe 17:00 Usual office hours of Custom8 are : 09:00 AM 17:00 PM 2. PLAN a calibration a couple of days in advance and let the people from Custom8 know. They will be aware and more likely be able to help you sooner in case of questions/problems. 3. CALIBRATION is not difficult or a nuisance, it is a simple procedure if you just follow the logical way to proceed. It is however something that has to be done to assure the correct functioning of the Ikélo system. 4. Do NOT PANIC, always be aware that Custom8 is there to help you. Send us an and we will guide you through (but do not forget remark 1.). Ikélo V4.4.x Calibration Procedure 6
FIRST STEP OF THE CALIBRATION As in every software is is of the utmost importance that you run the latest version of the software. Therefore we must check whether this is the case on the Ikélo we are about to calibrate. When starting up the Ikélo software the program automatically displays the installed version. Write this number down or remember it. Now you can go onto the website and in the download section you will be able to find the latest version. If this version number is different from the one you have installed on the Ikélo, download it and copy it onto a USB-stick. Insert this USB-stick into the Ikélo system and run the program from the stick. The latest version is now installed and everything should work according to plan. A second way on finding out whether you have the latest version installed is by writing an to support@custom8.com or info@custom8.com with the version number of the installed version. Custom8 will give you feedback on whether it is the latest version. If not, Custom8 will mail you the instructions on how to download and install the latest version. Ikélo V4.4.x Calibration Procedure 7
START-UP CALIBRATION PROGRAM Double click c8.ikélo.installation on the Desktop [or] c:\custom8\ikélo\c8.ikélo.installation SHOP INFO Complete this form with the shop information. Key in name, address and location of the shop where the Ikélo is being installed. Complete with telephone number and maybe the website. when ready or p When OK has been pressed you will notice that the field I. Shop Info has turned green. This is an indication that this part of the calibration has been done. This remark is valid for all the calibration steps. Ikélo V4.4.x Calibration Procedure 8
WEIGHT SCALE CALIBRATION As we have learned from the definition, to calibrate is to determine by comparison with a standard. In this part of the software we are learning the system the definition of weight by using some weights of which we are certain about how heavy they are. It might therefore be useful to use a separate weight scale (see picture at the right) ====> at this stage to verify the used standard weights. You can calibrate the weight scale, using at least 4 objects or combinations thereof with a known weight (including an empty scale). You have to start with the zero-calibration. Take everything OFF the weight-scale. Press Measure [A] Put the object(s) on the scale. Indicate the real weight of the object [B]. Press 'Measure'. Repeat the first step until at least 4 weights (after zero) have been entered. The weights used should not be clustered around one value but spread over the range (f.i. 0Kg, 20kg, 40kg, 60kg) Ikélo V4.4.x Calibration Procedure 9
CAMERA MASK Here the region of interest is indicated for each camera. Roughly the region of interest should correspond to the back panel. With nobody on the system, press Save Images. In 99% of the cases the images will be all right by setting the sliders to Auto. Only in the rare case when there is not enough light the image could be blury and needs to be slightly adjusted by moving the exposure or focus slider. It is however suggested to avoid this manual adjustment. when ready or p Ikélo V4.4.x Calibration Procedure 10
CAMERA LIGHT SETTINGS In this step, the camera properties brightness, contrast & saturation are set so the edges can be extracted from the t-shirt. Position an average sized person on the scale wearing a green t-shirt, facing the back panel, hands loose before the hip. Make sure the yellow rectangles, left picture as well as right one, are completely inside the GREEN jersey. Press Start Calibration [A] when ready or p Ikélo V4.4.x Calibration Procedure 11
CAMERA CALIBRATION At this stage we are calibrating height and distance. Hold the calibration pattern, which has been delivered together with the Ikélo, straight on the middle of the weight scale. Press Save Images [A] and make sure the captured image is clear and sharp. If not first try to press Save Images again. It is suggested to support the calibration pattern with a non moving object such as a chair. Do not hold it by hand because the risk of movement is far greater in this case. As is the case for the camera masks, in 99% of the cases the images will be all right by setting the sliders to Auto. Only in the rare case when there is not enough light the image could be blury and needs to be slightly adjusted by moving the exposure or focus slider. It is however suggested to avoid this manual adjustment. when ready or p Ikélo V4.4.x Calibration Procedure 12
CAMERA SAVE CALIBRATION INFO When we are certain everything has been performed according to plan we can finally save all the calibration data. We can visually verify whether every stage has been performed because if we did the squares at the bottom left corner of the screen will have turned green instead of black. (FYI : In this particular example only 2 out of 5 calibration items have turned green) Press 'Save Calibration Info'. In the dialog choose the location where you want to save the file. Preferably save the file on the desktop. Filename = Ikélo ID Data Time.c8z Copy this file to a USB stick (front right of the device, not on the PC) and send this file to custom8. via to support@custom8.be upload via the website Within 48 hours a calibration file will be returned. You can maybe speed up this period by making an appointment up front which is advised. Ikélo V4.4.x Calibration Procedure 13
MAKING THE CALIBRATION FINAL As told, within 48 hours a calibration file will be returned Perform the following procedure : 1. Download the calibration update from the indicated place 2. Copy it onto a USB-stick 3. Insert the USB stick into the Ikélo and run the program from the USB-stick This procedure installs the calibration update The Ikélo measuring device is now ready to be used. As an extra precaution you might consider the following : 1. Perform a few measurements 2. Send the measurement files to support@custom8.be -> you can find the measurement files in c:\custom8\ikélo\data or c:\custom8\ikélo\error (in case of an error) 3. Also send us the logfile : c:\custom8\ikélo\logfiles Custom8 will now do an extra check and give you the final OK to start using the Ikélo measuring device. If you have extra doubts or questions you are always free to info@custom8.com Ikélo V4.4.x Calibration Procedure 14
