SolidWorks Frequently asked Questions about Insert Fillet This document addresses the most common questions asked about the SolidWorks Insert Fillet command. Question: Is it possible to pattern a fillet, chamfer, or draft feature alone? Answer: It is not possible to pattern a fillet, chamfer, or draft feature alone. These features are dependent upon parent features for face or edge definition and must be patterned at the same time as their parent features. Question: Is it impossible to get the variable radius fillet to build properly. Is there any other way to create a variable radius fillet? Answer: Yes, this can be done manually using surfacing. A fillet tool is a shortcut tool for adding or removing material. More often than not, the standard fillet tool works really well and it can be used a lot of the time when creating fillets. However, if running into a situation, perhaps creating a variable radius surface that a fillet tool cannot handle, there are a couple of other techniques to use to get the job done, namely using a combination of surfacing tools. This method is fairly complex and time consuming, however if in a situation where the geometry is hard to get and the fillet tool will not produce the desired results, it can be a useful workaround. Question: Will the round corner fillet option work on an outer edge of a model? Answer: No, it only works for inner edges.
Question: Is it possible for variable radius fillets to include values of zero? Answer: It is not possible for variable radius fillets to diminish to a zero radius at intermediate locations along their length; only at the ends can this happen. If zero radius segments are required, several workarounds exist: Split the part to be filleted into separate bodies, ensuring the split planes occur on edges where zero radii are required. The zero radii points will then be at the end of an edge. The following example is two solid bodies. Similarly, use split lines to divide edges where zero radii are required. The zero radii points will then be at the end of an edge. The following example is one solid body.
Very small radii can be applied (0.0001mm, for example) to simulate zero radii. This will lead to a, technically, topologically incorrect model but the resulting face will be so small that it might be possible to consider it insignificant. Question: What do the Overflow Type settings for a fillet control? Answer: Overflow Type settings dictated how SolidWorks handles filleting situations where the fillet would need to interact with a neighboring face that is not tangent to the adjacent faces directly involved in the fillet. The option choice of Default means that the software is automatically picking between the two options. Keep Edge cause the edge the fillet would spill over to be maintained and the fillet surface gets adjusted. Keep Surface preserves the fillet surface and extends the face on the other edge to trim the fillet surface. See attached image.
Question: How is a variable radius fillet created? Answer: A variable fillet can be accomplished by using the fillet feature and selecting the variable radius option in the fillet type in the fillet property manager. For more information on variable radius fillets, search for variable radius fillets in the Help guide. Question: Why do variable radius and/or face fillets sometimes work where constant radius fillets do not? Answer: A constant radius (CR) fillet is constructed as analytic (or precise) geometry. Variable radius (VR) and face fillets are constructed using b-surfaces, and are therefore approximations. For this reason, VR and face fillets permit a greater tolerance in the geometry they are applied to when compared to CR fillets
Question: Why is it not possible to apply variable radius fillets to closed spline based edges? Answer: This is presently regarded as a limitation (it is not possible to apply variable radius fillets to periodic [= closed] spline based edges). The workaround is to use split lines or split entity (the following example used split entity to divide the spline before the extrusion was made) to generate vertices where variable radius control points can be added. Question: What would be a good example of using the face fillet option? Answer: When you want to bridge a gap without having to first fill that gap with material. Following is a visual example of a good use for a face fillet.
