1 ArtCAM Pro 5.5 Relief. The 3D model created by ArtCAM Pro is called a Relief and is shown in the 3D View. The Relief is defined by a resolution in a similar way to a bitmap image. But, instead of each square having a colour, each square has a height. Because of the way the Relief is defined, the 3D models created in ArtCAM always have a flat base and no undercuts. This makes it easier when machining the model. When a new model is created, the resolution that is specified in the Size For New Model dialog box determines the resolution of both the 3D Relief and the associated 2D-bitmap image. N.B. Since the 3D Relief is made up of squares, even the quality and smoothness of 3D shapes generated by vectors will depend on the resolution (though to a lesser extent than those generated from bitmap shapes). The Relief will be saved as part of the ArtCAM Model file (.art) or can be saved and loaded separately using the buttons on the Relief toolbar. This method saves only the 3D Relief in a file with a.rlf suffix. If a Relief file is opened, ArtCAM will automatically create a 2D View that contains a greyscale bitmap image of the 3D Relief, unless a 2D image with the same resolution as the relief already exists. A greyscale bitmap image is an image that uses varying shades of grey to represent different heights on the relief. Issue ArtCAM-P
2 ArtCAM Pro 5.5 Manipulating the 3D View The 3D View can be manipulated either by using the mouse or the buttons on the 3D View Toolbar. The 3D View Toolbar The 3D View Toolbar can be found at the top of the 3D View. The first four buttons on the toolbar allow you to Rotate, Pan, Zoom In and Zoom Out using the Left mouse button. The next two buttons are for going back to the Last View, and Scale to Fit, which puts the whole relief in the view. There are four fixed viewing directions. They are views along the X, Y, and Z axes and also the Isometric View. N.B. The Isometric View is often the best starting point for dynamically 'twiddling' the view with the mouse. The Low, Medium and High Detail buttons determine the resolution of the shaded relief. The next three buttons determine whether the Zero plane is drawn (on by default), whether detail is drawn in both X and Y directions, and whether the Transform is showing. The Items to Display button allows the user to specify which entities are shown in the 3D View at any one time. 46 Issue ArtCAM-P 5.5
3 ArtCAM Pro 5.5 The Colour Shade button shades the Relief. Changing the View with the Mouse The most common way of manipulating the view in ArtCAM is by using the mouse. The default Twiddle Tool button should be switched on. Different mouse buttons perform different actions. The Left mouse button controls rotation, the Right button is used for zooming in and out, and both buttons pressed together are used for panning. The table below lists the key combinations required to achieve the desired action. View Manipulation Rotation Zoom In / Out On Centre Pan the View Set View Centre [Mouse Button] + Mouse Movement Left Mouse Button Right Mouse Button Left and Right Mouse buttons together Double click Left Mouse Button While manipulating the 3D View, the Transform helps to show which way round the relief is orientated. Each axis of the Transform is represented by a different colour to make it easier to see which is which. Red represents the X-axis, Green represents the Y-axis, and Blue represents the Z-axis. 4 ArtCAM Pro 5.5 Generating 3D Reliefs Both bitmaps and vectors can be used to generate 3D Reliefs.The simplest way of creating a 3D Relief is by assigning a shape to the area of bitmap or the selected vector. The required shape can be defined using the Shape Editor. Reliefs can be created by using the vectors on their own to create Swept Profiles.. Weather Example This example takes vectors and generates a relief of the weather symbols. Select File Open. Select the model weather.art and press Open. Click the bitmap icon. The vectors can be seen clearly with the bitmap layer switched off. 48 Issue ArtCAM-P 5.5
5 ArtCAM Pro 5.5 Various 3D shapes will be applied to these vectors. This type of relief generation only works on closed vectors. Double Click on the rectangular vector around the outside. The vector is selected and the shape editor form appears. This allows you to define what shape you want the area enclosed within the vector. This can be a positive or negative dome, pyramid or flat plane. There are several ways this new shape can be put on the relief. It can be added on the top, select the highest parts using merge high, reducing it to zero, subtracting the area or select the lowest parts by merge low. Select a Plane shape with a Start Height of 4mm and press Add. Press Close to close the form. Press F3 This has raised the model up in Z by 4mm. Move the mouse over the relief and look at the Z value at the bottom of the window. Select a view down Z. Select F2. Select Window Tile. Issue ArtCAM-P
6 ArtCAM Pro 5.5 Double-Click the rectangular vector around the SUNNY vector. Select a Plane shape with a Start Height of 2mm and press Subtract. The rectangle plane of 2mm has been subtracted from the 4mm height, leaving a result of a 2mm height in the area. The Shape Form can remain open while assigning new shapes. Hold down shift and select all of the triangle vectors in the sunny symbol. Select the following shape values. To really define the shape, a pyramid profile, which raises up at a moderate angle of 25 degrees is used. This has been given a start height of 0 as it will be added on top of the current height in that vector area (2mm). When you use pyramid with no height, the width of the vector area and the angle used will determine the final Z height of the relief. 50 Issue ArtCAM-P 5.5
7 ArtCAM Pro 5.5 Press Add. The pyramid shapes have been added onto the pocket, to a height of around 3.3mm. Select the circle vector to represent the sun. Select the following shape values. This negative dome shape will be added to the relief, generating a bowl shape. Select Add. The bowl shape has been added. This can be undone by selecting Undo from the top of the 2D view window. This undo will only, generally go back one stage, so it needs to be selected immediately. Select the Undo icon. Change the Dome Angle to +15 degrees and select Add. Select the vector text SUNNY. Select a plane shape with a height of 1. Select Add and then Close. Issue ArtCAM-P
8 ArtCAM Pro 5.5 The text is added to the relief by 1 mm and is at a height of 3mm. Double-Click the rectangular vector around the SUNNY SPELLS vector. Select a Plane shape with a Start Height of 2mm and press Subtract. Select the cloud vector. Select a Dome shape with an angle of +25 degrees, start height of 2 with No Limit selected. Select Add. This has added a domed cloud shape on a platform of 2mm, so it stands proud. Select Undo. Change start height to 0, select option Limit to Height with a shape height of 2mm. Select Add. The cloud, has no platform and rises at the same angle until it reaches the shape height of 2mm, where it is levelled out. As this shape height is added, then the levelled out height is 4mm. Select Undo. Select the option Scale to Height. Select Add. With this option, the overall shape of the cloud remains as if there was no limit on the height and then it is scaled down proportionally. Select Undo. Select the option Constant Height. Select Add. 52 Issue ArtCAM-P 5.5
9 ArtCAM Pro 5.5 This option keeps a constant height and will change the angles slightly to maintain the shape. Select the circle vector. Select a Plane shape with a Start Height of 2.75mm and press Undo The whole sun shape is added to the relief, giving an overlap effect. Select Undo. Select a Plane shape with a Start Height of 2.75mm and press Merge High. The sun can be seen poking out the cloud as merge high will take the highest area. As the cloud is higher, then it remains prominent. Select the triangle vectors. Select a Plane shape with a Start Height of 2.75mm and press Merge High. Select the inner cloud vector. Select a Plane shape with a Start Height of 2.75mm and press Merge Low. The sun's rays can be clearly shown. By using merge low, the inner cloud area has been reduced to the depth of 2.75 with a matching plane shape. If Zero was selected that area would have been reduced to Z0 of the relief. Select the sunny spells vector. Select a Dome shape with a Start Height of 0.5mm with No Limit and press Add. Issue ArtCAM-P
10 ArtCAM Pro 5.5 This has added a flat platform of 0.5 mm and then the dome shape on top. This make the rounded text stand out. Double-Click the rectangular vector around the STORMY vector. Select a Plane shape with a Start Height of 2mm and press Subtract. Select the cloud vector. Select a dome shape with a start height of 0, with Constant Vector to a height of 1.5mm and press Add. Select the thunderbolt vectors. Select a pyramid shape with an angle of 75 degrees with a start height of 2.5, to No Limit. Select Merge High This cloud is slightly flatter than before. The thunderbolts have been given a pyramid shape and a high angle to make them sharper. Using merge high makes them stand out from the cloud. Select the stormy vector. Select a Pyramid shape with an angle of 45 degrees, a Start Height of 0.5mm with No Limit and press Add. The stormy text has a small platform and then a moderately sharp pyramid shape. Exercise. Generate your own shapes for the other vectors. From the Assistant, select the Lights and Materials icon. From the option Use Colours from, select 2D view. The 2D bitmap colours are overlaid the vector shape giving the relief a more realistic effect. 54 Issue ArtCAM-P 5.5
