5 Training Guide Objectives 1 1 Training Guide Objectives This manual presents the basic key concepts concerning WorkXplore 3D features. The main goal of this manual is to provide users with the tools (knowledge and ideas) that may be applied to specific problems that they may encounter when analyzing CAD parts. To complete this information, you may turn to the online help available in the application itself. At the end of this training guide, you should be able to: Import and open any CAD part using native interfaces, Display the CAD model in an optimum way, Take all possible measurements, Annotate the CAD model, Create basic entities, Perform more advanced analysis, Create scenes and play animations and finally Share information with coworkers. This manual has several files which show how to use different functions. 7 WorkXplore 3D Environment 2 2 WorkXplore 3D Environment When starting the WorkXplore 3D application, the following dialog box is displayed. Graphic User Interface - Main Areas WorkXplore 3D ribbon. It contains toolboxes with the common functions that you may have to perform in a chronological order. Some of them can also be found in the Creation, Edition and Display tabs. Part Manager with vertical tabs. You can use it to browse your computer to open/import your CAD part, manage components in the case of an assembly, create scenes and manage layers. There is also a Vero Info tab which allows you to connect to the WorkXplore 3D website and ask for technical support. Basic display functions: zoom, predefined views in the X, Y and Z axis, views. System Help: when activating a new function, this small frame shows explanations on how to use it. Do not forget to keep an eye on it: it may be very useful! 9 Importing and Opening CAD Files Importing one or more CAD Files 3 3 Importing and Opening CAD Files WorkXplore 3D reads standard and native 2D/3D CAD files originating from most of the CAD applications. This includes: Catia V5 Parasolid Solidedge STEP WorkNC geometry ISO toolpaths Inventor Catia V4 Pro/E Cadds Unisurf Acis DXF JT Unigraphics Solidworks IGES STL (binary and ASCII) WorkNC toolpaths DWG The user interface allows importing several CAD files from various CAD applications in one single environment and building virtual unified prototypes or 3D models. After importing your CAD file, you can analyze it and save it in the WorkXplore 3D format (A3D extension) and share it with others. 3.1 Importing one or more CAD Files Once you have launched the application, you can start by importing a CAD model in a native format. This is done very easily using the Explorer tab in the Part Manager. 1. Click on the Explorer tab on the left in the Part Manager. This automatically shows the file browser and all files to be found in each directory. File Browser 2. In the upper part of the Explorer tab, click on the directory where the part is stored on your disk. For our example, select the Training directory. For training, select an IGS file (e.g. wxplore_exa_01.igs) and drag & drop it onto the Viewing Area. You can also double click on the file in the Part Manager. Since the file you want to import is an IGS file, the Import 3D dialog box is automatically displayed, allowing you to define the triangulation tolerance for the import as well as the type of entities you want to import: Import 3D 4. 11 Importing and Opening CAD Files Importing one or more CAD Files 3 Imported CAD File The model is imported with the filters and layers defined in the initial CAD program. You can now view the CAD model under different orientations, make measurements, analyze it, etc. IMPORTING SEVERAL MODELS IN THE SAME VIEWING AREA WorkXplore 3D also offers the possibility to import several models into the same Viewing Area, e.g. to build different prototypes, assemblies. This is done very easily in the Explorer tab. FILTERING FILES NOTE The Explorer tab contains a drop-down list that allows you to filter the CAD files to be imported according to their types. Filtering CAD Files in the Explorer Tab After opening the first model, activate the Import option and double click on each additional file(s) that you want to import. IMPORT NOTE When the Import option is deactivated, press and hold down the [Alt] key then drag and drop a new model to import it into the same Viewing Area. DIRECT OPENING NOTE If you do not want to review the import options when opening a native file, activate the Automatic option. IMPORTING SEVERAL MODELS IN SEPARATE VIEWING AREAS The application allows you to open various models in separate Viewing Areas in different tabs so that you can work on several files at the same time, compare models, etc. 1. Once your first model is imported (e.g. wxplore_exa_01.igs), deactivate the Import option. 2. Double click on another file in the Explorer tab. For our example, select the wxplore_exa_02.a3d file. 13 Importing and Opening CAD Files Importing one or more CAD Files 3 3. Close the different tabs to close the CAD files. IMPORTING FILES USING THE WINDOWS EXPLORER 1. Deactivate the Import option. 2. Open a Windows explorer. 3. Browse the Training directory of the application. 4. Press and hold down the [Ctrl] key then click on the wxplore_exa_03.a3d and the wxplore_exa_04.a3d files. 5. Drag and drop your selection from the Windows explorer into the Viewing Area. Opening Files from a Windows Explorer The 2 files are imported into 2 separate Viewing Areas indicated by the 2 tabs. Files Imported into 2 Viewing Areas Activate the Import option and repeat this procedure. The 2 files are now imported in the same tab. 14 3 Importing and Opening CAD Files Importing one or more CAD Files Files Imported into the Same Viewing Area DRAG & DROP WORKNC WORKZONES NOTE You can also use the drag & drop method to import WorkNC workzones into WorkXplore 3D. The application will automatically looks for the geometry files. IMPORTING COMPRESSED FILES You can also drag & drop compressed files onto the Viewing Area. The application can read the following formats: ZIP, 7Z, RAR, BCZ (Siemens PLM ZIP). Drag & drop the training.zip file onto the Viewing Area. The Archive File Import dialog box is displayed: Archive File Import Dialog Box You can choose the files to be imported from the compressed file by checking the boxes in front of their names. If you check the box of the parent folder, all the files will be imported. Click OK to validate. Depending on whether the Import option is activated or not, all the selected files are imported into a single Viewing Area or separate Viewing Areas. 15 Importing and Opening CAD Files Saving a CAD Model Saving a CAD Model After importing a CAD model, you are free to save it in the WorkXplore 3D format with an.a3d extension. This will allow you to retrieve the file for further modifications and share it with coworkers who also use the application. Save in the WorkXplore format You can also click on the 3D icon in the top left-hand corner of the user interface and select Save or Save as: Saving the CAD File 3.3 Opening a WorkXplore 3D File A WorkXplore 3D file with an A3D extension can be opened in different manners. Click on the icon and browse your file Click on the 3D icon and select Open, or select your file in the list of recent files. As for importing, you can also use the Explorer tab in the Part Manager or the Windows Explorer and drag and drop the file onto the Viewing Area. Each time you open a WorkXplore 3D file, it is added to the Recent Files list. 3.4 Importing Invisible Entities When importing files with hidden entities, you have the possibility to select whether you want to import them as invisible entities, as shown entities or not to import them (default parameter). 16 3 Importing and Opening CAD Files Importing Invisible Entities 2. In the Import 3D dialog box, activate the Import Invisible Entities option. 3. Activate the Show option. Import Invisible Entities: Show Option 4. Click on the Import button. 5. Make sure that the Import option is deactivated and open the same file again. 6. This time, leave the Import Invisible Entities option deactivated in the Import 3D dialog box. 7. Click on the Import button. You should obtain two tabs with a different part display: Invisible Entities Imported and Visible Invisible Entities Not Imported You can also import the invisible entities and keep their invisible status: 1. Open the same file again. 2. In the Import 3D dialog box, activate the Import Invisible Entities option. 3. Make sure that the Leave Invisible option is activated. 4. Click on the Import button. 5. Click on the icon in the Show/Hide toolbox or in the toolbar on the right side of the user interface. This allows you to switch the display between shown and hidden entities. Click on the icon again to restore the part display. 3.5 Exercise: File Import OBJECTIVES Import files in the same tab and save the resulting assembly under the WorkXplore 3D format. PARTS NEEDED The parts are located in the Training directory (WorkXplore > 3D Samples > Training): screws_chc.igs rods.igs switch.igs wheel.igs INSTRUCTIONS Import the 4 files into the same tab and save the assembly file in the WorkXplore 3D format with the switch_assembly name. 19 Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Entity Selection and Selection Filters 4 4 Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Selecting entities or faces is required by a wide range of functions in WorkXplore 3D. Selection filters will help you to select the appropriate entities. These selections often imply that you define auxiliary entities such as points, vectors and planes. 4.1 Entity Selection and Selection Filters A wide range of functions requires the selection of one or several entities and, in certain cases, face selection. PRE-SELECTION Functions which require a selection operation have a pre-selection indication showing the concerned elements. Pre-selection depends on the type of point to be selected, as defined in the Point Definition dialog box. STANDARD MOUSE CLICK SELECTION If a selection is required, the mouse cursor in the Viewing Area takes the shape of a small hand Entity Selection dialog box is displayed. and the Click on the entity or the required face to select it. Selected entities or faces change their color according to the selection color defined in the Application Parameters. To cancel the selection of an entity or face, click on it again. The entity or face display switches back to the original color. 20 4 Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Entity Selection and Selection Filters AVAILABLE OPTIONS X = not available for face selection The first function icon line in this toolbox defines what is selected. This function allows you to select all visible entities. All This function allows you to deselect all visible entities. None This function allows you to invert the selection: selected entities are deselected Invert and not selected entities are selected. This function allows you to select entities by their names. When you activate this Names function, a dialog box is displayed which allows you to enter the character string you are looking for. It is possible to use the wildcards [*] and [?] where [*] replaces any character string and [?] a single character. The second function icon line defines how the selection is made. This function allows you to select entities by a user-defined rectangular selection Window window. X X X X 1. Click on the first point of the selection window. 2. Drag the mouse diagonally and click on the second point of the selection window. Polygon This function allows you to select entities by a user-defined polygon. 1. Click on the first point of the polygon. 2. Click successively on other points to form the polygon. 3. Validate [ 4-9] the polygon. This switch button allows you to define whether the entities are selected inside or Inside or outside the selection window or polygon. Outside This switch button allows you to define whether the entities to be selected must Strictly inside strictly be inside the selection window or polygon. If Crossing is active, all the or Crossing entities which are partially included are selected. Any of the selection methods described above X X selects all unselected entities, cancels the selection of all previously selected entities. 21 Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Entity Selection and Selection Filters 4 Filter Selecting this option displays the Filter by dialog box, which allows you to define which entities are taken into account for selection. X By default, all entities are selected. Clicking on the All button selects all the entities. Clicking on the None button unselects all the entities. Clicking on the Invert button swaps selected and unselected entities. To select specific entities, proceed as follows: Click on the None button. Check the boxes, which correspond to the entities to be selected and click on OK to validate. Click on the All icon to select all the entities of the same type. Layer The settings apply only to the current selection and are reset at each new selection. This function allows you to select the layers that are taken into account during selection. By default, all the layers are included. The following dialog box is displayed when you select the function. X Tick the layer checkboxes for which you want to select entities and click on Close. 22 4 Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Point Definition or N Color This function allows you to choose a reference color for selection. This color is then displayed in the color case next to the function icon. By default, no color is active, which is represented by an N in the color case. 1. Activate the function by clicking on the color icon. 2. Select an entity whose color you want to define as reference color. Only the entities with this specific color will be selected. To cancel this color filter, double click on the color case. If you click on the down arrow next to the color icon, the following drop-down menu is displayed. The following options are available: By Selection: This option works as described above. Click on an entity to define a reference color. Color Selection: This option displays the extended color selection dialog box which allows you to select one of the available standard and user-defined colors. Cancel Filter by Color: Just like a double click on the color case, selecting this option cancels the reference color selection. 4.2 Point Definition A point is the most simple and most important entity in WorkXplore 3D. It is the basis for any construction or measurement. Consequently, its definition must be quick and easy. By default, if point selection is required, a mouse click makes the application search for characteristic points. These points are the vertexes on models or the extremities or middle points for complementary entities. As these points are not sufficient, the following dialog box, offering advanced point selection functions, is systematically displayed as soon as point selection is required. Point Definition Dialog Box This dialog box contains a number of function icons, which allow you to define the required point. AVAILABLE OPTIONS On Screen Selection This point is a projection on the screen plane passing through the origin of the mouse cursor when you select a point. Keyboard shortcut: Press the [E] key. 23 Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Point Definition 4 Absolute Coordinates Defines a point by entering its coordinates with respect to the origin of the current axis system. When you select this function, the following dialog box is displayed: Enter the X, Y and Z coordinates of the point to be defined and click on OK to validate. Relative Coordinates Defines a point by entering an offset value with respect to the coordinate values of the most recently defined point. When you select this function, the following dialog box is displayed: Enter the offset value for the X, Y and Z coordinates with respect to the most recently defined point and click on OK to validate. Circle Center Defines a point in the center of a selected circle or circular surface boundary of the model. Keyboard shortcut: Press the [C] key. Intersection Defines a point at the intersection of two selected straight segments. Between two Points with Distance Ratio Defines a point between two points and by defining a ratio for the distance between these points. For example, if you want to define a midpoint, select two points and enter 0.5 in the ratio dialog box, which is displayed. Point on a Curve Defines a point at a selected position on a curve. Point on Mesh Vertex Defines a point at a selected vertex of a mesh model. Point on a Face Defines a point, which is the perpendicular projection of the mouse cursor position on the screen onto a face of the model. Keyboard shortcut: Press the [F] key. Point at Same X Coordinate The point defined with this function has the same Y and Z coordinates as the most recently created point and the selected X coordinate. Point at Same Y Coordinate The point defined with this function has the same X and Z coordinates as the most recently created point and the selected Y coordinate. 24 4 Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Plane Definition Point at Same Z Coordinate The point defined with this function has the same X and Y coordinates as the most recently created point and the selected Z coordinate. Virtual Point Sometimes, point definition needs an intermediary step. If this button is highlighted, the selected point is temporary and its coordinates are saved. Keyboard shortcut: Press the [I] key. 4.3 Plane Definition Planes play a significant role among the WorkXplore 3D entities. Plane definition or selection is necessary in a large number of functions. That is why the advanced plane definition functions have been grouped in the following dialog box which is displayed each time a plane entity is required. Plane Definition Dialog Box DEFINE PLANE POSITION The two icons on the left have a particular function. They allow you to define the position of a plane with respect to a reference plane. Positions a parallel plane at a selected point with respect to the previously selected or created reference plane. Positions a plane at an offset distance with respect to the previously selected or created reference plane. Proceed as follows: 1. Select the required option. 2. Define the reference plane. 3. According to the selected function, either select a passing point or enter an offset value in the dialog box which is displayed. The plane is created automatically. DEFINE THE PLANE The following function icons allow you to define a plane. Defines the XY plane of the origin axis system. Defines the XZ plane of the origin axis system. Defines the YZ plane of the origin axis system. Defines a plane by selecting two line type entities. Defines a plane by selecting three points. Defines the XY plane of the local axis system, if any. 25 Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Vector Definition 4 Defines the YZ plane of the local axis system, if any. Defines a perpendicular plane tangent to a selected point on a straight segment or polyline. Defines a plane by selecting an existing plane. PLANE PREVIEW NOTE If the plane is correctly defined, it is represented as a transparent square in selection color. Plane Preview 4.4 Vector Definition See also... Validating/Cancelling a Function [ 4-9] Some functions need the definition or selection of a vector. Each time a vector is required, the following dialog box is displayed. Vector Definition Dialog Box This dialog box contains a number of buttons, which allow you to define the vector and its direction. AVAILABLE OPTIONS Inv This button allows you to invert the vector direction. X Defines a vector in the X axis of the local axis system, if any. Y Defines a vector in the Y axis of the local axis system, if any. Z Defines a vector in the Z axis of the local axis system, if any. Dxyz Selecting this option allows you to define the XYZ coordinate values of the vector. When you select this option, the following dialog box is displayed. When you select this option, the Point Definition dialog box is displayed. Defines a vector in the X axis of the origin axis system. Defines a vector in the Y axis of the origin axis system. Defines a vector in the Z axis of the origin axis system. Defines a vector by selecting the axis of a cylindrical face. Defines a vector, which is perpendicular to a plane. When you select this option, the Plane Definition dialog box is displayed. PROCEDURE Proceed as follows: 1. Select the required option. 2. Define the vector. 3. If required, invert the direction by selecting the Inv button. 4. Validate [ 4-9]. 4.5 Copying and Pasting Entities You can copy entities in the current file or in a different file. To illustrate this, open the Switch.igs and Screw_chc.igs files in separate tabs. Files Imported in 2 Tabs 1. Activate the tab containing the Screw_chc.igs file. 2. Click on the Edition tab. 3. Click on the Copy button in the Copy/Paste toolbox. You can also press the [Ctrl] + [C] keys. 4. Select all the entities in the Viewing Area. 5. Activate the tab containing the Switch.igs file. 6. Click on the Paste button in the Copy/Paste toolbox. You can also press the [Ctrl] + [V] keys. 27 Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Validating/Cancelling a Function 4 Copied Entities 4.6 Validating/Cancelling a Function Numerous functions prompt the user to validate his actions or to cancel them if the desired result is not attained. If a function needs to be validated, the validate/cancel function triangle is displayed in the upper right corner of the Viewing Area. Validation triangle VALIDATION Validate by clicking on the green tick. Validate by using the mouse button defined in the Application Parameters, if any. Press the [Enter] key of your keyboard. 29 Viewing Display Modes 5 5 Viewing 5.1 Display Modes Display modes are available in the Visualization toolbox. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_05a.a3d file. 2. Click on the Display icon in the Visualization toolbox and try the different display modes by clicking each of the available icons: Display Menu Wireframe Shading Shading + Wireframe Hidden Faces Hidden Edges Selecting this option switches the display into wireframe mode. Selecting this option switches the display into shaded mode without surface boundaries display. Selecting this option switches the display into shaded mode with display of the surface boundaries. Selecting this option switches the display into a kind of wireframe mode. Whether hidden surface edges are displayed and how depends on the option selected in the Hidden Edges sub-menu. If hidden edges are not displayed, this option may be useful to make a screenshot of the part. Selecting this option displays a sub-menu containing the following entries: Hidden, Dotted and Low Intensity. The selected option acts on the display of the surface boundaries if Shading + Wireframe or Hidden Faces has been selected as main display mode. Hidden: hides all the surface boundaries which are not visible. Dotted: all invisible surface boundaries are displayed as dotted lines. Low Intensity: all invisible surface boundaries are displayed as light colored lines. Smooth Edges Selecting this option allows you to show or hide the smooth edges of the model. 30 5 Viewing Display Modes Texture Selecting this option allows you apply the texture which has been previously defined in the Select a Texture dialog box to the part or model. Define Textures Selecting this option allows to select the entities or models to which you want to apply a texture. The Select a Texture dialog box is then displayed in which you can select from a large number of textures. This option also allows you to define the default texture to be applied when you select the Texture option. Shading Quality Selecting this option displays a sub-menu containing the following entries : Ultra Fine (0.001), Fine (0.050), Normal (0.100), Rough (0.200), Very Rough (0.400). These options allows you to change the triangulation tolerance of the part display either for selected faces or models. In the following example the tolerance value is set to Fine on the left (yellow) faces and to Very Rough on the right (gray) faces. APPLYING A DISPLAY MODE TO A GIVEN OBJECT You can select a different display mode for each surface of your model, but only if the model is exploded. You can also select a different display mode for each model in an assembly. Right click on the surface/model, go to the Display menu, then to the Rendering menu and select the relevant display mode. Surface Display There is another way of applying a display mode to a given surface/model: 1. Click on the Display icon in the Visualization toolbox. 2. CURSOR GUIDE The icon in the Orientation toolbar allows you to switch the display of the cursor guide in the Viewing Area on or off. It may be set from 0 (totally transparent) to 1.0 (non transparent). Before using the function, we need to activate the High Transparency Quality option: 1. Click on the 3D icon and select Options. 2. In the Parameters dialog box, click on the Display tab. 3. Activate High Transparency Quality option and click OK to validate. 41 Editing Exploding your Model 6 6 Editing 6.1 Exploding your Model The Explode function allows you to separate part surfaces to store them in a different layer, delete them, etc. Several options are possible. Open the wxplore_exa_03.a3d file. Click on the icon in the Edition toolbox. Explode Menu SEPARATING FACES FROM THE MODEL 1. Select the Explode option from the Explode menu. 2. Click on the surfaces that you want to separate from the model and validate. SEPARATING AND DELETING FACES FROM THE MODEL 1. Select the Explode and Delete option from the Explode menu. 2. Click on the surfaces that you want to separate and delete from the model and validate. The selected surfaces are automatically stored in the recycle bin. SEPARATING EACH SURFACE OF A MODEL WorkXPlore 3D also offers you the possibility to explode your model and separate each of the surfaces included in the model. 1. Select the Explode a Model option from the Explode menu. 2. Select the whole model and validate. Click on the icon and select Merge Models. 2. Click on the surface(s) then on the model to which they must be merged. Or click on all the surfaces that have to be merged into a single object 3. Validate. Note that a model may have one single surface but that you must have at least two models for merging. 6.2 Deleting and Restoring Entities Open the wxplore_exa_01.igs file. DELETING ENTITIES Let s suppose that you want to delete the pink surfaces from the part. 1. Click on the icon in the Edition toolbox. 2. Select the surfaces to be deleted. For our example, use the Color filter. 3. Validate. Deleted entities are automatically stored in the recycle bin and may be restored at any time, provided however that you did not already save your file. RESTORING DELETED ENTITIES 1. Recycle Bin REMOVING ENTITIES DEFINITELY Click on the arrow of the icon and select Empty the Recycle Bin definitely. 6.3 Stitching Models Model stitching allows connexity initialization between faces and determines faces representing exact shapes (cylinders, planes ) It also allows you to obtain consistent face orientation in order to obtain reliable results for volume calculation, draft angle and undercut analysis, etc. When you retrieve a model in WorkXplore 3D the faces are not necessarily orientated in the right direction. It is however essential to have consistent face orientation in order to obtain reliable results for the following functions: calculating the volume of a model, checking the model with respect to a point cluster, analyzing draft angle and undercut areas, analyzing the model thickness, etc. You can stitch a whole model automatically or stitch faces of a model manually. Manual stitching is mostly used to repair models. Open the CatiaV5-sample2.CATPart file. There are 3 ways of accessing the function: In the Edition toolbox, click on the icon and select Solid Stitching. In the 3 cases, the Solid Stitch dialog box is displayed and the model appears with different colors: Stitch Solid Dialog Box and Orientation Colors The gray color indicates the outside of the model. 45 Editing Stitching Models 6 The free edges are displayed in green on the model. As the model is not stitched, you can see in the dialog box that there are 856 free edges. You can hide them by deactivating the Show Free Edges option. You can also change their color by clicking on the green rectangle and selecting a new color. You can show dots on the free edges by activating the Display Dots on Free Edges option. You can also change their color by clicking on the blue rectangle and selecting a new color. You can adjust their size in the Dot Size field. STITCHING PARAMETERS Stitching Tolerance Concatenate Faces This value defines the distance between faces during the stitching process. For our example, keep the default value. This option allows concatenating the faces when stitching. For our example, activate this option. AUTOMATIC STITCHING Click on the icon to start stitching the selected model. Stitched Model and Orientated Surfaces The surfaces are now displayed in gray, which means that they are correctly orientated. There are no more free edges. You can click on the icon to invert the orientation of the surfaces. If you are working on an assembly with several models, you can click on the model to be stitched. icon and select another Click on the icon to exit the function. Click on the faces to invert their orientation and validate. 6.4 Making Transformations The Transformations toolbox of the Edition tab allows you to make transformations such as translations, rotations, mirrored copies, etc. We are going to see the Translation Move, the 3D Rotation and the Move from One Axis System to Another functions with the CatiaV5_sample2.CATPart file. Click on the icon in the dialog box. The Rotation dialog box is displayed: Rotation Dialog Box By default, the Z axis of the origin axis system is activated. Activate the Creation tab and click on the icon in the Axis Systems toolbox. 4. Create the following axis system by clicking on 2 lines (see and below) and validate. In the Transformations dialog box, click in the Saved Transformations drop-down list and click on the + symbol to add the set of transformations you have previously saved. 51 Analyzing Measurements 7 7 Analyzing 7.1 Measurements Making measurements is an important function in WorkXplore 3D. This will allow you to obtain more precise information about the part you have to produce: milling depth, size of the bounding box, etc. Measuring functions are available in the Measurements toolbox. Measurements Toolbox Measurements can be made on single entities (points, edges/curves, faces, etc.) or between two entities of same or different types. To illustrate this, we are going to use the wxplore_exa_05a.catpart CAD file Making Measurements on One Entity Click on the Measure on One Entity button. The Automatic Measure dialog box is displayed. Automatic Measure Dialog Box: One Entity Note the One Entity button is activated. AUTOMATIC MODE In this mode, the entity selected for measurement depends on the position of the cursor on the model in the Viewing Area. The entities which can be measured in this mode are: Extremity Points, Center Points, Edges/Curves, Faces, Circles, Radii, Cylinders, Tori. A visual aid is displayed next to the cursor to indicate the type of entity that is currently located underneath the cursor. 62 7 Analyzing Analysis Tools Dynamic Sectioning WorkXplore 3D offers a dynamic sectioning function which you can use to explore the inner part of a model and take measurements on the created sections. Open the wxplore_exa_03.a3d file. Click on the icon in the Analysis toolbox to start the function. This automatically activates the Dynamic Sectioning tab with all possible options. Dynamic Sectioning Tab Dynamic Section 1 To use this function, you must first define the cutting plane that you want to use. The three-axis manipulator makes this function very interactive: you simply need to move or rotate the reference manipulator to pilot dynamic sectioning. Press and hold down the mouse button on the body of the blue axis and drag the manipulator to move the section up or down. You can also move the blue wheel button to the right or left in the Position toolbox. Position Toolbox You can also drag the green and red axes of the manipulator to move it along the selected axis. Click on the M button in the Position toolbox to set the manipulator back to the middle of the Viewing Area. Move Section along Axis Press and hold down the mouse button on the colored arcs of the manipulator to rotate the dynamic section. There are 2 types of rectangular/cylindrical bounding box: Orientated: the box is created in accordance with the orientation of the part. Minimum: the box is created in such a way that the required block of material is reduced to a minimum. RECTANGULAR BOUNDING BOX 1. Open the wxplore_exa_04.a3d file. 2. Select the Orientated or Minimum option in the Bounding Box menu. 3. Click the model or surfaces that you want to include in the bounding box and validate. For example, if you want to extend the bounding box by 5 mm on the X+ axis and by 10 mm on the X- axis, enter 5 in the X+ field and press [Enter] then enter 10 in the X- field and press [Enter]. Note that you can change the color of the collision curve (Intersection Color). You can remove the collision curve by clicking on the icon. DEFINING RAW MATERIALS WITH DENSITY AND PRICE For automatic estimating, you need first to draw a general list of materials with density and price/kg. Click on the 3D icon and select Options. Select the Analysis tab: Parameters - Analysis Materials are added in the Materials table. Let s add aluminum to the list. 1. To add a new material to the list, click on the + button next to the material list field. The following dialog box is displayed. Material Dialog Box 2. 76 7 Analyzing Analysis Tools Bounding Box Cost Calculation Note that you can try different calculations directly by changing the density and price/kg attached to the material in the system settings Comparing Models In your daily activities, it may happen that you receive a first version of a model then a second version a few days later without being aware of the exact differences between both versions. With the model comparison function, you can highlight the part areas that have been modified between two versions of a model. The modifications are color coded: the green color means that material has been removed, while the red color indicates that material has been added. In this example, we are going to use the wxplore_exa_05a.catpart and wxplore_exa_05b.catpart files. 1. Activate the Import option. 2. Open each model in the same tab. Since both models are very similar, it may be difficult to distinguish between both. To determine the quantity of material to be added or removed, press and hold down the [Ctrl] key then click on the surface: WorkXplore 3D shows you the distance between the two faces: Compared Distances You can modify the information displayed in the labels by activating the Show Dx/Dy/Dz option in the dialog box. As these are measurement labels, you can also move them in the Viewing Area. In the Compare Models dialog box, click on the Keep Indicators button to keep the radius displayed after ending the function. Click on the Delete Indicators button to remove the corresponding indicators. If for any reason you want to invert the initial and modified models, click on the icon Analyzing Draft Angles WorkXplore 3D allows you to view all draft angles on your model. SURFACE ORIENTATION ATTENTION Before analyzing draft angles, you have to make sure that the surfaces are correctly orientated by using the Solid Stitching function. 1. Open the barrel.igs file. 2. In this case, for the display to be changed dynamically, activate the Auto option or you will have to click on the Apply button to view modifications in the Viewing Area Analyzing Curvature The Curvature function displays the part with different colors according to the curvature radius of the surfaces. This will allow you to rapidly determine the required minimum cutter diameter to machine the part. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_05.a3d file. 2. Click on the Models icon in the Analysis toolbox and select Curvature. Models Menu: Curvature 3. Click on the model that you want to analyze. To define the range of radii to be displayed, enter the desired maximum and minimum values respectively in the Maximum Radius and Minimum Radius fields. Open the wxplore_exa_05.a3d file. 2. Click on the Models icon in the Analysis toolbox and select Plane Faces. This automatically shows the model with colors that depend on whether a surface is planar or not, perpendicular, etc. Plane Faces For higher flexibility, you can change the color codification directly by clicking on the color rectangle and selecting another color. You can position your cursor over the various types of planar faces to obtain the angle information according to a reference plane. For parallel faces, the information label below the cursor displays the distance between the reference plane and the plane formed by the selected surface. The angle information displayed below the cursor can be modified in the Angle Format section of the dialog box. You can deactivate the Dynamic Information option so that no angle information is displayed below the cursor. To change the reference plane, click on the Reference Plane button, create a new plane for the part display to be updated accordingly. It allows you to measure the area of the projected zone. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_05.a3d file. 2. Click in the Models icon in the Analysis toolbox and select Projection on a Plane. For our example, select the XZ plane. You may also define the Projection Plane first and then click on the icon next to the Projection Vector field. This allows you to position the projection vector perpendicularly to the projection plane. 7. Click on the Apply button. The projected surface of the part along the defined vector is displayed on the defined projection plane. The volume of this projected surface is indicated in the Area field of the dialog box. Projected Surface and Area If you are working on an assembly part or with several models under the same tab, you can click on the Select New Entities button and select another model to analyze. Deactivate the Display Analyzed Entities only option if you want all the models to be displayed in the Viewing Area. 8. Click OK to validate. The projected surface is still displayed on the Viewing Area. You can keep it for measuring purposes or delete it Identifying the Face Types This function allows you to differentiate face types (planes, cylinders, cones ), group together the different faces of the model and attribute a different color to each type. 1. The Solid Edge Analysis dialog box is displayed and the color display of the model has changed. Solid Edge Analysis Use the Model Color option to select a new color for the model. The Show Concave Edges, Show Convex Edges, Show Smooth Edges and Show Border Edges options allow you to hide or show the corresponding edges, change their color and increase/decrease their display thickness. The thin areas are displayed in red, and the thick areas in blue. The dialog box indicates the minimum, mid and maximum thicknesses. The areas where the thickness is equal (+/- the value defined in the Mid Thickness Percentage field) to the mid thickness are displayed in green. You can move the cursor in the colored bar of the dialog box to adjust the mid thickness value. The color display is modified dynamically: Mid Thickness Cursor You can activate the Gradient option and obtain a progressive color scale from red to blue. Click on various points of the model to obtain a label with the precise thickness at the clicked point. You can delete or keep the labels by clicking on the corresponding buttons in the dialog box. If you are working on an assembly part or with several models on the same session, you can click on the Select New Entity button and select another model to analyze. Deactivate the Display only Analyzed Entity option if you want all the models to be displayed in the Viewing Area. You can adjust the calculation precision by moving the Accuracy cursor in the dialog box and clicking on the Update button. Setting this cursor to High increases the calculation times. Allows you to select the contours of a clicked surface. If you have already selected edges on the clicked surface, these will be included in the composite curve but not duplicated. Screenshots can be directly printed, sent per mail, saved in the JPEG, GIF, TIFF or BMP format or inserted in a Word file. A screenshot collector is also available if you want to manage several screenshots at the same time. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_01.igs file. 2. Click on the arrow of the icon in the Collaboration/Export toolbox. Collaboration Toolbox: Snapshots 3. Select the Window or Rectangle option, depending on whether you want to make a screenshot of the entire Viewing Area... SCREENSHOT COLLECTOR For practical reasons if you want to create several screenshots on the fly, you can use the Image Collector. 1. Click on the arrow of the icon and select Collector. 2. Position the part as you wish in the Viewing Area and click on the icon or on the icon for a rectangle selection. Image Collector Images can be copied to the clipboard, saved in any format available or deleted. Note that multi-selection is possible. 9.2 Creating Animations WorkXplore 3D allows you to animate all parts of your assemblies and create a video file. Basically, this initially consists of defining each of the parts or elements that you want to animate then defining the movements they can make (movement type, start and end position, etc.). To illustrate this, we are going to animate the various elements of the wxplore_exa_06.a3d file. DEFINING THE ENTITIES TO ANIMATE 1. Click on the Animation icon in the Collaboration/Export toolbox. The Animation dialog box is displayed with the list of all the entities that can be animated. Now that you have defined the entities to animate, you must indicate the movement type and the extent of each one. ANIMATING THE SLIDE 1. Click on the entity to animate in the list. 104 9 Documenting Creating Animations Animation: Slide Definition You must now select the type of movement that you want to give to the entity by clicking the corresponding tab in the lower part of the dialog box: you can define a translation movement, a rotation or a guided movement. Here, the slide must complete a translation movement. 3. Make sure that the Translation tab is activated and click on the button next to the Vector field. 4. Create the translation vector that will indicate the movement axis of the slide. Here, you can click the Y button in the Vector Definition dialog box since the slide must move along the Y-axis. Animation: Vector Definition 5. Validate the vector direction. You must now specify the extent of the translation movement. 6. Specify the maximum start and end positions of the entity along the direction axis. If you want the entity to move starting from its initial position, keep the 0 value in the Start field. In our example, as we want the slide to retract from the box in the opposite vector direction, we need to enter a negative value. 105 Documenting Creating Animations 9 sure that the slide fully retracts, we are going to specify a large movement distance, e.g. 200 mm. Enter -200 in the End field. Slide End Position Note that you can simulate the Slide movement: Position your cursor in the Viewing Area. Press and hold down the [Ctrl] key then use the mouse wheel button to animate the model. Slide Translation Direction ANIMATING THE COVER We are now going to animate the cover, not with a translation movement but with a rotational movement. 1. Select the Cover entity in the list. 2. Select the Definition tab then the Rotation tab in the lower part of the dialog box. 3. Click on the button next to the Rotation Axis field and create the rotation axis. To do this, we suggest that you create a vector that goes through the rotation axis of the holes: Click on the 2pts button in the Vector Definition dialog box. Press and hold down the [Ctrl] key and select the 4 screws in the dialog box. 2. Create a translation movement in the hole axis (Z-axis). The screws must move up by 100 mm. ORGANIZING AUTOMATIC ANIMATION Now that you have defined each of the entities to animate and how they should be animated, you can create an automatic animation to specify which entity must move and at which moment compared to others. Regarding our example, you can create the following animation as an example: 1. The cover opens. 2. The slide retracts from the box. 3. Each bolt unscrews then screws again. 4. The slide returns in the box. 5. The cover closes again. The first thing to do is to define a number of steps to divide the complete animation. You can for example cut your animation into 15 steps, each with a duration of 1 second. 1. Click on the Animation tab. 2. Enter 15 in the Number of Positions field. Animation Settings Now that you have defined the general settings of the animation, you set the sequence order for all the animated entities. 4. Click on the Definition tab. 5. Select the various entities and define the start and end positions for each of them in the corresponding fields. From position # 0 to position # 5, the Cover opens: From 5 to 10, the slide retracts: From 10 to 15, the bolts unscrew: PLAYING THE SEQUENCE 1. Open the Animation tab again, 2. Press and hold down the [Shift] key then click on the first and the last entities on the list. 3. Click on the icon to play the animation. 108 9 Documenting Creating Animations Play Simulation When playing the simulation you can also make the animation play in three different ways: Positive means that the entities move in accordance with the direction defined in the parameters, Negative means in the opposite direction and Bidirectional means the both positive and negative modes alternate. Try the Positive, Negative and Bidirectional options. RECORDING THE ANIMATION If you want to record the animation, e.g. to release it to others in your company or to external partners, you can create a video file with an AVI extension. 1. Click on the Record tab under the Animation tab. Record Animation 2. Enter a name for the video file that will be created. Do not forget to add the AVI file extension. 3. Click on the button of the Recording Zone option and draw a rectangular selection to define the section of the Viewing Area to you want to record. The Animation dialog box is closed while the animation is played and recorded automatically. 6. Read Video You can now share this file with other persons Collision Checking After creating an animation, you can make WorkXPlore 3D check for possible collisions between the different objects. It simply consists in defining two objects for collision check: collisions are then marked in red during the simulation. Let s take the animation we created earlier... Animation 1. This is indicated in red in the Animation dialog box. Collision areas are also displayed in red in the Viewing Area: Animation with Collision The collision check function also shows in real time the proximity distance between two objects. Let s configure a collision check between the cover and the screws... Screws Proximity As you can see in the above picture, the distance between the screw and the cover is displayed in real time in the Status field. When the distance between the screw and the cover falls below the tolerance, the line appears in orange. The D. mini field on the right indicates the minimum distance between both elements. Note that proximity distances are also displayed in real time in the Viewing Area. Of course, you can include the collision check in your video animation. 113 Sharing Exporting a Model Sharing 10.1 Exporting a Model Once you have imported a model, you can export it in other formats directly from WorkXplore 3D especially in the IGES generic format. This function is very useful when dealing with native interface files since you can avoid using expensive, compatible solutions. 1. Import the wxplore_exa_05.a3d file. 2. Click on the icon in the Collaboration/Export toolbox. Export Menu 3. Select the export format, e.g. IGES. 4. Select the objects to be included in the target file. Here, you can select the whole model. 5. Validate. 6. Browse the storage location and attach a name to the file. 7. Click on the Save button Exporting a Model with the Client Viewer If you want to share a model with someone and make sure that there will not be any compatibility problems, you can create an EXE file that can be read by anyone. This EXE file includes a WorkXplore 3D light version with basic display, measuring and analysis functions. Collaboration/Export Toolbox 1. Open the wxplore_exa_06.a3d file for which you have created an animation. 2. Click on the icon in the Collaboration/Export toolbox. 3. Select the objects that you want to export in the viewer and confirm your selection. For our example, select the whole model. 4. In the Mini Viewer Generation dialog box, define the directory to save your file, give it a name and click on the Save button. The Client Viewer Export dialog box is displayed. You can also use the Export File field to select the storage location of the file that will be created and give it a name. 6. If you want the file to be automatically compressed in a ZIP file, activate the Compress option. For our example, do not activate this option. 7. Activate the Export Animation for the animation to be exported in the EXE file. You can use the Password button to protect the EXE file with a password. 8. Click on the Default Render Mode drop-down list and select the default display mode for the part in the exported file. Client Viewer Export 9. Click OK to start the export. You now only have to transfer the EXE file to the relevant persons. They will only need to launch this file to view the model and attached data in the Client Viewer of WorkXplore 3D. You can expand this tree structure: Assembly Tree Structure By using the corresponding buttons at the bottom of the user interface, you can play the animation which was exported. You can make measures on the model: Click on the Measures icon at the top of the Client Viewer and select the type of measure to be made. Make the corresponding measurement on the model. You can also add labels to the models: Click on the Measures icon at the top of the Client Viewer and select Label. Click on a point of the model where you want the label to point to.
