6 Project Case Study: Hubbell Ave Des Moines, Iowa - Sept 2016 Project Overview For IaDOT, with our partner REY Engineers Mobile Scan the corridor busy road, safety issues for conventional survey Establish 29 Mobile scan targets based on City DM and IaDOT control Integrated UAV data to supplement Mobile LiDAR data Deliver 3D lines, pts to IaDOT in MicroStation V8i SS3 format using TopoDOT

7 Project Case Study: Hubbell Ave Des Moines, Iowa - Sept 2016 suas Data Capture Trimble UX5 fixed-wing suas 300 ft AGL flight with 15mm lens & 24Mp calibrated camera, 85% S&F overlap. 27 min flight time, 1,058 images with 0.94 (0.075 ft) native GSD site control points, double-measured using Produced both 1 and 2 GSD orthos, point clouds with ~ 250 pts/m 2 Aerial Processing in Trimble Business Center Photogrammetry edition.

8 Project Case Study: Hubbell Ave Des Moines, Iowa - Sept 2016 Mobile LiDAR Data Capture Riegl Mobile LiDAR system, 600kHz w/ spatial resolution of 10mm. Approx 5.0 lane miles of roadway (includes cross and frontage streets), 35 mph avg speed LiDAR data captured in 1 day, used onsite GNSS Base Station receiver setup on control. 29 road control points, double-measured using RTK from 2 different Base setups, horz 0.04 ft spec. Vertically, used Trimble DiNi level for closure of 0.02 ft on all targets, based off City BM info. 2 passes each direction,with 19 final point cloud tiles

10 suas Point Cloud Ground Extraction Processed suas point cloud resulted Million points prior to ground extraction. After initial ground extraction + performing a spatial re-sampling, reduced it to Million points for surface determinations (still included non-roadway areas in the project)

14 Data Comparison Results Compared the UAS surface to the Mobile LiDAR surface Expected Ht accuracy based on processing engine used 1-2 pixels (0.075 x 2) = 0.15 ft Increase accuracy through lower flight, or employ higher resolution camera capability and lens (36 Mp with 35mm lens), 300ft AGL 0.04 ft GSD x 2 = 0.08 ft

15 Conclusions Mobile LiDAR offers higher overall absolute accuracy and precision for most demanding urban corridor mapping. Limited site capture due to vehicle access, economics of site size UAS offers rapid deployment, good positional accuracy (with proper project controls and flight altitude) Offers full coverage of areas inaccessible normally Additional Control, Lower Flight Ht, Different sensor can yield higher accuracy Project hybrid approach offers expanded deliverables and able to capture the ENTIRE site, provide current high-res ortho imagery for design and communication.
