1 Creating a Snowman Scene By: Shane Trautsch Blender 2.72 What you will learn Basic Modeling Particle systems sculpting Materials and Textures Lighting
2 Creating a Snow By now, you have created a snowman. Now, we will create snowflakes! Actually, we only need to make one snowflake. However, we need to create the snowflake on a different layer. Because we will be duplicating this snowflake using a particle system, it is not necessary to have the snowflake on the same layer. Go to the second layer without moving the snowman at all. Now we have space to make our snowflake. First press 7 to go to top view and make sure you are in Orthographic mode. Press and hold SHIFT + C to snap your cursor to the center.
3 Next, press SPACE and add in a Cube, in order to make this snowflake we are going to use some editing tools, mainly the Mirror function and Screw function. This will limit the amount of time it takes to create the snowflake, and make it symmetrical. After creating the cube, press 7 to go to top view. WIth the cube selected, Press S and then X to scale the cube on the X axis. I scaled mine to.25. (S, X,.25) Now, press G and then Y and type 1 This will move the cube up so one side is near the origin. (G, Y, 1) Go into edit mode and subdivide the cube three times. Now press A to deselect the cube(not in yellow) and press B and select the three vertices shown on the picture below This button limits the vertices that are selected to the viewpoint. In this case, we want to select all the vertices underneath the three in the picture above as well.
4 With these vertices selected, press E to extrude them.5 blender units out. (E,.5) Then Press G and then Y to move them on the Y axis by.2 blender units. (G, Y,.2) Repeat the steps above on the other side of the cube (MAKE SURE TO FIRST DESELECT EVERYTHING WITH A). When complete it should look like this. Now some of you might be wondering Why does this look absolutely nothing like a snowflake? That is because this is just a segment of a snowflake. If you can, picture a snowflake cut into 6 tiny pieces. This would be one(from a very simple snowflake.) To make the snowflake, press SHIFT + C and center the origin point on the screen. Next, press A to select everything and click on the spin function.
5 As you can see in the picture, I spun the segment 360 degrees and made 5 steps(duplications). This gives a rough snowflake shape. Now, press TAB and go back to object mode. If you press 1 you can see that the snowflake is much too thick we need to scale this down. Go ahead and scale the snowflake on the Z axis by.3 (S, Z,.3) Note: For added effect use smooth shading.
6 Congradulations! You have now created the snowflakes for our scene! Creating the ground Make sure you are back to the first scene and move everything else to a different layer(i.e. move the snowman ) First, add in a plane and scale it by a factor of 8. (Add plane, S, 8) Next, press TAB and go to Edit mode. We need to subdivide the plane 5 7 times.
7 Now we can go into sculpt mode. Sculpt mode gives you the ability to change the mesh of an object (make it smooth, change its shape) and is more free flowing than other portions of blender. Think of it as painting, by clicking on the picture, you can change the utensil you are using. This part is really up to you, but recommend making a snow hill shape and smoothing it out. Once you have the sculpting completed make sure to save!
8 Adding the particle system. A particle system in blender can be used for many different things, including creating a flamethrower. In this case, we are going to be simulating falling snow. First add in a plane and scale it by a factor of 8. (Add plane, S, 8) Next, more the plane up 10 units on the Z axis. (Z, 10) On the right hand side of the screen, click on the particle system box as shown above. Then, click on new. Change the settings as shown in the picture below.
9 A particle system creates particles(simple explanation I know). The settings within allow you to change the amount of particles, as well as how the particles act. For this scene, we are going to create 10,000 particles, that last a long time (the actual number does not matter, we just don t want the snow disappearing. We will also be adding rotational symmetry, as we are going to turn each particle into a snowflake. Under the Render tab, of the particle system click on object. Select the snowflake, change the Size to.01 and the Random Size to 1. This is going to make the particles each render as a snowflake. Since we enabled rotation, we will have 10,000 snowflakes falling down on our scene all at different angles and all different sizes. (You can make the snowflakes fall by pressing Alt + A.
10 Texturing the snow When you look at snow, you often see it twinkle. This is because of the light reflecting off the snow. In order to achieve that effect, we will be using the a texture. Before we can use the texture, we need to set up the material. Select the ground of the scene and go to the Materials Tab. Change the setting to match the picture below. Note: You can also apply this material to the snowflake for added effect
11 One to the right of the Materials Tab is the Texture Tab. CLick on this and make sure it looks exactly like the picture below before adding a new texture. Once you add a new texture change the type to Clouds. Under the Color tab, Turn the Brightness and Saturation to 0 and turn to contrast up to 5. Under the Clouds Tab, change the Size to.0001, the Depth to 6 and the Nabla to.03.
12 These setting affect how the texture looks. The texture is going to simulate the glinting of light reflecting off it. In order to apply this texture, we need to set its influence. For this tutorial we are going to make the Influence the specular intensity of the light. This way, we can use a lamp to cast the texture on the scene. Under the Influence tab (just scroll down in the texture tab) uncheck Color and check Intensity. Change the Intensity value to.1. This complete the final addition to the snowman scene. We are now ready to set up the lighting, position the snowman, and do a final render!
13 Setting the scene First, we need to add a camera( using space, add camera ). Next go into front view (1) and press Ctrl+Alt+0. This is going to set the camera angle for the scene. Also, add the snowman back into the layer, using M. For this scene we are going to use two lamps. One for light and another to for our snow. Snow lamp Make sure your origin point is in the center of the grid by pressing Shift+C. Next, press 0 and go into camera view. Add in a Point Lamp. Position the lamp so it is in the middle of the scene (use G while in camera view).
14 Also, under the lamp settings, change the energy to 4 or 5 and uncheck diffuse. Other Lamp Add in another Point Lamp and position it like the picture below.
15 The last step is to move the snowman back into the scene. (Go to second layer, select everything, M to move everything back to the first layer) MAKE SURE TO SAVE BEFORE MOVING ON! You have finished your snowman scene! Congradulations! Make sure to save and render your final project! Below are a few ideas to improve on the snowman scene. This is simply the beginning, from here it is up to you to tweak settings and make this scene your own. Happy animating! Other tips Change the background to black Make sure the snowflakes stopped at the correct frame Consider tweaking material colors Add some text to the scene
