nd International Symposium on NDT in Aerospace - We..A. Comparison of Probing Error in Dimensional Measurement by Means of D Computed Tomography with Circular and Helical Sampling Jochen HILLER, Stefan KASPERL, Tobias SCHÖN, Stefan SCHRÖPFER * Daniel WEISS ** * Fraunhofer IIS, Development Center for X-ray Technology, Dr.-Mack-Str. 8, 97 Fürth, Germany ** Carl Zeiss Industrielle Messtechnik, Carl-Zeiss-Str. -, 77 Oberkochen, Germany Abstract. In this article the parameter probing error according to the national guideline VDI/VDE is determined for the circular and helical sampling of spherical objects using cone-beam computed tomography. In order to be able to evaluate exclusively the acquisition geometry, simulated data sets are used for the determination of the parameters. Due to the completeness of the data a significantly lower probing error is to be expected when applying helical CT, especially in the upper and lower border areas.. Introduction Axial cone-beam computed tomography systems (D CT) for industrial applications use a circular sampling curve, well aware of the fact that using this acquisition geometry it is not possible to obtain all information necessary for an artifact-free reconstruction. Namely in the upper and lower border areas of the measured volume high contrast losses are to be expected due to the incomplete data resulting from the angle of aperture. When applying the helical acquisition geometry, however, the data for the reconstruction of the measured object are complete. The parameters described in the national guideline VDI/VDE are suitable for a quantitative comparison of the measurement characteristics of both acquisition geometries. These parameters are defined for specification test, supervision and comparison of measurement characteristics of CT systems following DIN EN ISO - closely. Referring to optical and tactile measuring systems the parameter probing error is described as the three-dimensional deviation behaviour of the entire system in a very small measured volume, differentiating between probing error form PF and probing error size PS. In this article the parameter probing error is determined for the circular and helical sampling of spherical objects according to the national guideline VDI/VDE. In order to be able to evaluate exclusively the acquisition geometry, simulated data sets are used for the determination of the parameters. Due to the completeness of the data a significantly lower probing error is to be expected when applying helical CT, especially in the upper and lower border areas. The paper is divided as followed. Section compares conventional and helical D CT systems. In section the content of the national guideline VDI/VDE regarding the definition of the probing error is described. Subsequently the parameters of License:

the computer simulation of the CT scanning process are described in section. After the presentation of the results in section the paper ends with a short summary.. Comparison of circular and helical cone-beam sampling geometry Conventional D CT techniques for industrial applications are usually using a circular sampling geometry, even though not all necessary information for an artifact-free reconstruction of the object to be inspected can be provided this way. During the circular sampling (standard D CT) the object to be inspected is rotated only around the rotational axis (see Figure a). The reconstruction method is normally based on the Feldkamp algorithm (FDK) [] or derivates. According to the so-called Tuy-Smith sufficiency condition [] an exact reconstruction without losses of spatial resolution using a circular acquisition mode is possible if all surfaces intersecting the object intersect the trajectory of the X-ray source at least once. This condition is only true for the central x-y plane of the measuring field using standard D CT. In a circular cone-beam scan, Radon data are known only inside a torus as shown in figure. rotation axis shadow zone Figure : Radon torus in the circular cone-beam scanning case. Radon data are known only inside the torus. Losses of spatial resolution in the direction of the ration axis using circular conebeam CT can lead to rhombus-like artifacts (so called Feldkamp artifacts). These artifacts increase with the cone beam angle []. The trend-setting helical CT is based on a helical sampling geometry. When using helical data acquisition, the object is also shifted along the rotation axis. From the object s perspective, the source of radiation is moving on a helical trajectory. For the helical acquisition mode the Tuy-Smith sufficiency condition is fulfilled for all x-y planes. So the measuring object can be reconstructed exactly. Figure shows the two sampling geometries in comparison. 3 . Probing Error according to the guideline VDI/VDE Aim of the guideline VDI/VDE of the society for metrology and automation (GMA) is the description of methods for the reproducible testing and calibration of measurements using industrial CT. The guideline also addresses techniques for the determination of measurement uncertainty. In addition to that, fields of use for industrial CT are to be specified and described in order to achieve optimal usage of systems available []. The guideline is supposed to facilitate a common approach towards testing and calibration for producers and users of such CT systems. Also an aid is given to the competent users for evaluating their systems in a better way. On part -. some parameters like probing error size PS or form PF are defined. Also acceptance tests are defined in order to check, whether the specified critical values are adhered to. The requirements of the guideline towards the test specimens are: A calibrated test specimen consisting of six spheres is recommended to evaluate PS and PF both on- and off-axis and at three different heights in the volume. Sphere diameter should be -% of the measurement space diagonal. At least surface points for the determination of the deviations for size and form are to be used. It is recommended to perform the measurement under two "significantly" different magnifications. The probing error size PS describes the difference between measured diameter D and reference value D ref : PS = D - D ref () The probing error form PF describes the range of radial deviations and is defined as the difference between maximal and minimal distance of the measured surface points from the centre of the compensating element: PF = R max - R min () Figure illustrates the measuring procedure on the calculated surface of the reconstructed and segmented ball specimen. Figure : Measurement of the diameter D and the minimal and maximum values R min and R max using a compensating element (marked red). For the adjustment of the compensating element in this case a best-fit method was used.

. Numerical simulation of the CT scanning process To compare the dimensional measuring properties of circular and helical sampling computer simulations were used. The CT scanning process was simulated deterministically. A monoenergetic point source was assumed. A sketch of the virtual ball specimen used is displayed in Figure. The diameter of the balls is mm. This value was used as the reference value D ref. axis of rotation z z = mm mm Figure : Sketch of the ball specimen used in the simulation. The diameter of the balls is mm. The balls are numbered as indicated. The virtual detector consists of a 78 9 pixel matrix with a pixel pitch (= pixel size) of µm. The focus to detector distance is 8 mm and the magnification factor 7., which implies a focus to isocenter distance of 7 mm, a fan beam angle of.9 and a cone beam angle of 7.. For the circular (FDK) and helical reconstruction the following parameters were used. We only investigated the measurement properties for one magnification factor. Parameters for the circular (FDK) reconstruction: Number of projections : Voxel size in reconstruction (kubic) : µm Parameters for the helical reconstruction: Number of projections : Angle increment :. Axial shift increment : µm Voxel size in reconstruction (kubic) : µm The reconstructed volume size is

. Results For the determination of the ball s surface a local adaptive threshold method is used []. The probing error size and form was determined using the compensating element sphere and a best-fit method to adjust the element into the measuring points on the ball s surface. Per ball measuring points were used. The local measurement deviation as the difference of the measuring points to the compensating element fitted is plotted in the angle range of -π π and π in spherical coordinates to form an unrolled ball surface. Values between local measuring points are interpolated. The values are standardised in the range of - µm. Figure shows the diagrams for the balls reconstructed. For the circular CT the high deviations at the poles for balls beyond the central plane (ball number,,, ) are caused by missing Radon data. The results for helical CT show, that high measurement accuracy is achievable even if the object is placed outside of the central plane (ball and ) due to complete Radon data. In comparison to circular CT the results clearly show the almost homogeneous measurement properties of the setup when using a helical sampling geometry. In all fields the measuring deviations are almost comparable using this scanning mode. The difference of the measuring points to the compensating element fitted is plotted in the angle range of -π π and π in spherical coordinates.

. Probing error size and form The probing errors size and form for the FDK and the helical reconstructions of the virtual ball specimen were determined according to the formulas () and (). The probing errors size and form are plotted against the ball number as shown in figure. The deviation of probing error size for the FDK and the helical reconstruction is about.7 till. µm at a voxel pitch of µm. This higher deviation is primarily caused by the higher interpolation effort in the helical reconstruction algorithm at the back projection filtering step. For this, further investigations have to be arranged whether this effect can be neglected in case of real projection data or not. Outside the central plane the probing error form for the FDK reconstruction is about three times higher than for the helical reconstruction. The deviation is caused by incomplete data. The Tuy-Smith condition is not fulfilled for the circular sampling geometry. As a consequence of that, the image sharpness at the poles of the balls outside the central plane is less than in the central plane. The probing error form for the helical reconstruction is about µm to 8 µm for all balls. As assumed, only in the central plane the probing error form is comparable to the circular sampling. Probing error size PS (µm) - Circular CT (FDK) Helical CT - Ball number Probing error form PF (µm) Circular CT (FDK) Helical CT Ball number Figure : Probing error size (top) and form (lower) plotted against the ball number.

In Table the results for the probing errors size and form of both circular and helical sampling geometry are listed. Circular CT (FDK) Probing error Helical CT Probing error Ball Size PS (µm) Form PF (µm) Ball Size PS (µm) Form PF (µm) Table : Results for the probing errors size and form for the circular and helical reconstruction of the virtual ball specimen Summary and outlook In this article the probing errors size and form were determined for a circular and a helical CT scan and reconstruction of a ball specimen in order to compare the measuring properties of these two CT techniques according to the national guideline VDI/VDE. A deterministic CT simulator was used to calculate the projection images of the virtual ball specimen. The results clearly show a small probing error form in all measurement positions considered due to complete Radon data using the helical sampling geometry. Using a circular sampling geometry probing error form is only comparable to the helical sampling in the central plane. Because of the total avoidance of Feldkamp artifacts, high precision dimensional measuring with minimum geometrical faults at reproduction, helical sampling should be preferred to the classical circular sampling geometry - especially when scanning very long objects - to achieve highest precision of form measurements. Due to the higher interpolation effort in the helical reconstruction algorithm, further investigations regarding the accuracy of size measurements using helical CT and real projection data will be arranged next.
