You will learn to find the trigonometri funtions for any given angle and to work with salar quantities, vetors and resultants. In this LIFEPAC, you will also study the law of sines and the law of osines and will use them to solve appliation problems. Objetives Read these objetives. 6 Unit 6 TRIGONOMETRIC APPLICATIONS 1. TRIGONOMETRY OF OBLIQUE TRIANGLES LAW OF SINES Around 1852, Mt. Everest, known as Peak XV at the time, was delared the highest mountain peak with an estimated height of 8,839 meters. This alulation, done during the Great Trigonometrial Survey of India, was omputed using trigonometri formulas; none of the researhers ever saled the mountain. In 1999, an Amerian team plaed global positioning system devies on the mountain and determined the height to be 8,850 meters. Considering the vastness of the mountain and the thikness of snow and ie that are onstantly hanging, the auray of the original trigonometri survey is remarkable. In this lesson, you will learn about one of the formulas that was used to help alulate the mountain s height. Setion Objetives Review these objetives. When you have ompleted this setion, you should be able to: Find missing angle and side measures of a triangle using the law of sines. Use the law of sines to solve indiret measure problems. LAW OF SINES Let ABC be any oblique triangle. Draw the altitude, h, from +C to AB. A Right triangle trigonometry tells us sin A = h b sin B = h a Solving eah of the equations for h results in h = b sin A h = a sin B b h C a B Therefore, b sin A = a sin B. Another way of saying this is sin A a = sin B b. By the same method, you an draw the altitude, h 1, from +B to AC and show that sin A = h 1 sin C = h 1 a Therefore, h 1 = sin A and h 1 = a sin C, so sin A = a sin C Therefore, sin A a = sin C. Sine sin B sin C b and are both equal to sin A a, the ratios of the sine of an angle to the side opposite the angle are all equal. This is the trigonometri formula known as the law of sines. 7 TRIGONOMETRIC APPLICATIONS Unit 6 FORMULA Law of sines: In any triangle, sin A a = sin B b = sin C where A, B, and C are the angles opposite the sides a, b, and, respetively. Key point! The law of sines may also be written as To use the law of sines, you only need to know: two sides and one angle; or one side and two angles. Beause all three ratios are equal, you an pik out only the two needed ratios and form a proportion. Example Find the length of a in the given triangle. Solution Use the law of sines, sin A a = sin B b and substitute the given values: sin 30 a = Cross-multiply: sin sin 30 = a sin 45 Sine 30 and 45 are speial angles, you know their exat values. Substitute these values and solve for a: 10( 1 2 ) = a( 2 2 ) 5( 2 5 = a( 2 2 ) 2 ) = a( = a a sin A = 2 )( 2 2 ) b sin B = A sin C C a B Example In triangle ABC, a = 18, +A = 45, and +B = 105. Find. Solution Beause you wish to find and you know a and A, it makes sense to use the proportion sin A a = sin C from the law of sines. Note that you are not given the measure of +C. You are, however, given enough information to alulate it. The angles in a triangle must total 180, so +C = 180 ( ) = 30. Now use the law of sines: sin A a = sin C sin 45 sin = sin 45 = 18 sin 30 ( 2 2 ) = 18( 1 2 ) = 9 2 Sine polygons with more than three sides an be broken down into triangles, the law of sines an be used to solve problems involving other polygons. Example In parallelogram ABCD, BC = 8 inhes, +B = 110, and diagonal AC = 12 inhes. Find the measure of +CAB to the nearest tenth of a degree. 8 Unit 6 TRIGONOMETRIC APPLICATIONS Reminder: On your alulator, be sure you are in degree mode and then follow these key strokes: It is not always possible or pratial for surveyors to use right triangle trigonometry to alulate measures in the field. For example, there may be a swamp in the loation from whih a right angle ould be measured. With the law of sines, a surveyor need not rely on right triangle trigonometry to alulate neessary measurements. Example 110 sin 8 12 = INV sin To find the distane from an observer s point, A, on one side of a river to a point, P, on the other side, a line, AB, measuring 2,540 feet was laid out on one side and the angles BAP and ABP were measured and found to be and 78 10, respetively.
