1 1 Parallel Line Segments Parallel t Parallel What is the same about the groups of parallel line segments? They are always the same distance apart. They do not intersect each other. If you extend the line segments, they will not intersect. Why aren t these line segments parallel? Some intersect each other. Some don t touch, but they are slanted toward each other. Please note: Students need to identify parallel sides within two dimensional shapes, particularly quadrilaterals. However, as an extension, teachers may choose to include parallel lines and rays in instruction. 1 You Try: Draw examples of line segments that are parallel. Then draw examples that are not parallel. 2 2 Angles can have big openings or small openings. We can test the size of an angle by using the corner of a piece of paper. The corner of the paper is the same size as a right angle. Less than a Right Angle (smaller opening) Right Angle Greater than a Right Angle (bigger opening) We often mark a right angle with a square. Please note: Students are not required to use the words acute or obtuse, but teachers may choose to use those terms. Please note that obtuse angles are greater than a right angle (90 degrees) and less than a straight angle (180 degrees). Reflex angles are greater than 180 degrees and less than 360 degrees. 2 Test each angle below. 3 3 A polygon is a closed, flat, shape with all straight sides. Some Types of Polygons: t Polygons: triangle quadrilateral This is not a polygon because it has a curved side. pentagon hexagon This is not a polygon because it is not closed. septagon or heptagon octagon This is not a polygon because it is not flat. It is a 3 dimensional object. Please note that students name the different polygons in second grade. Third grade focuses mainly on quadrilaterals,but teachers can include other polygons when looking for attributes. 3 You Try: Determine if each shape is a polygon. The arrows show where the parallel sides are. The tic marks show which sides are the same length. Please note: Students should be able to mark a right angle. They are not required to use the other markings, or to read them. Experience marking the shapes can be beneficial. Some teachers use color to help students mark the shapes instead of the standard mathematical markings. 4 You Try: What are the attributes of this polygon? 5 5 Parallelograms are quadrilaterals with 2 pairs of parallel sides. Some people say 2 sets of parallel sides. Is this a parallelogram? Is this a parallelogram? Quadrilateral?! Quadrilateral?! 2 pairs of parallel sides?! It only has 1 pair. 2 pairs of parallel sides?! This is not a parallelogram because it only has 1 set of parallel sides. It has a different name, trapezoid. This is a parallelogram because it is a quadrilateral with 2 sets of parallel sides. *Please note: Students also need to identify rectangles (quadrilaterals with 4 right angles), rhombuses (quadrilaterals with 4 sides the same length), and squares (quadrilaterals with 4 right angles and 4 sides the same length).
