1 Digit A symbol for a number (1-9) Whole Number A number without fractions or decimals. Place Value The value of a digit that depends on the position in the number. Even number A natural number that is can be divided by 2 Odd number A whole number is a number that cannot be divided by 2 Prime number A number whose only factors are itself and 1. Sum The answer in addition. (Key words for adding: add, and, altogether, both, combined, in all, increased, more plus, sum, total) Product X (8)(6) The answer in multiplication. (Key words for multiplication: OF, in all, times, twice, whole, Quotient 24/ \3 The answer in division. (Key words for division: average, cut, divide, each, equal pieces, every, one, share, split) Difference The answer in subtraction. (Key words for subtraction: decrease, difference, left, less than, more than, reduced, remain) Greater Than One number is greater than another number when that number's value is bigger. The symbol for greater than is > Less Than One number is less than another number when that number's value is smaller <
2 Mean The mean of a group of numbers is the same thing as the average. Average The number that best represents a group of numbers. Median The median is the middle number of a group. Mode In a list of numbers the mode is the number that occurs the most. Range The difference between the largest and the smallest in a data set Horizontal Axis On a graph, the axis runs from left to right. Vertical Axis On a graph, the vertical axis runs up and down Called the Y Axis Circle graph a picture that uses a circle to show how a whole amount is divided into parts; also known as a pie chart Bar graph A picture that uses bars to compare values Double Bar Graph A bar graph containing two sets of bars to display, compare 2 related data sets Line graph A graph that uses points connected by lines to show how something changes in value (as time goes by, or as something else happens). Pictograph A graph that uses small pictures or symbols to represent data.
3 Order of operations The rules for performing math operations in expressions with more than one operation (PEMDAS). Pattern A sequence of numbers that continue according to the pattern Exponent An exponent is when a little number is to the right and a bit above a number. It's also called a "power." Factors A factor in is one of the two or three (or more) things we multiply together to get our answer. Angle An angle is a figure formed by two rays that have a common endpoint. Base In geometry, the base of a shape is the side (usually the bottom) that forms a right (90 degree) angle with the height of the object. Parallel Two lines are parallel if they are in the same plane and never intersect. Area The number of square units that covers a shape or figure. Perimeter The distance around the outside/edge of a figure Perpendicular Two lines are perpendicular if the angle between them is 90 degrees. Circumference The distance around the outside/edge of a circle Diameter A straight line that passes through the center of a circle from edge to edge Radius The radius of a circle is a line segment starting at the center and going to the outer edge of the circle. The radius is half of the diameter. Pi Represented by the symbol π Has the value of approximately 3.14 Volume Volume is the amount of space inside of something like a box or a tin can.
