Managing the background information/images In the Map Background menu, you can go to Manage Background Maps and modify how your background maps look. Dim allows you to adjust the brightness of the background map. 100 means that it disappears, 0 means that it has maximum intensity. You can also allow other backgrounds to shine through by adjusting their transparency. This is the column under the T. By putting in values, you can see more than one background at a time. Generally, this doesn t seem to improve things and it is better to just toggle between the backgrounds to keep things simpler.
Back to the contours When the Lidar data are processed, OCAD puts the contour lines right into the map. This is good and bad. The issue is that the data processing by OCAD has a lot of noise. The area that the arrow points to is zoomed in on the right; there are little dots here and there and random squiggles. While these happen to be form lines, this the same is true for regular 5 meter contour lines. They are busy and messy. Other Lidar processing may do a better job at not resulting in as many squiggles; Karttapullautin is one of them. This is a program that can be downloaded for free and it works better but the processing time is much longer that OCAD. The new version of OCAD (2018), seems to have better, smoother contours.
So how do you deal with the squiggles and noise in the contour lines? The issue really comes down to the fact that the field checker is trying to give a picture of the terrain for an orienteer to use so that they can travel through the area. This means that the field checker is really an artist, drawing a picture. For this reason, many mappers just use these OCAD developed contours only as their basemap and then make adjustments as they see them in the field. If the person is using a tablet in the field, then the drawing of the new contour lines is just done once. If the mapper is using a map board, the information on the map board is scanned into a computer and then the map board information is drawn.
So how do you deal with the contours that OCAD-processed Lidar gives you to make a good map that shows the terrain? Many mappers use a method that requires a few simple steps. Basically, you want to have the contours that you draw end up on the final map and get rid of the ones that were created by the Lidar data. In the end, you will hide the contour lines that the Lidar data created and leave your lines. In order to create your own lines, you duplicate the symbols for each contour line time (form line, 5 m contour and index contour) that you want to replace with a smoother line. Edit this new symbol (one way is to change its color) to differentiate it from the primary symbol. Then change all the OCAD-generated lines to this type of new symbol. The way to do this is shown on the next slide.

Aerial Photos How to use them and get them into the set of backgrounds for your map Google Earth is a good source for aerial photos. They are not georeferenced but are OK. Other sources can provide better data but Google Earth will give a visual of what you are mapping. The Lidar backgrounds that have been discussed have most of the information you need; it may be that the aerial just provides reassurance. When you don t know what something is, the aerial may help. In one of the pictures that follow, there is a large dark area on the Intensity return. The aerial photo shows that it is a parking lot, with cars parked in neatly organized spaces.
To import a Google Earth image, you have to snip it and file it with a name and in a place where you can access it in OCAD. After you have done this, go to the Background Map menu and click on all the eyes in the left hand column so those backgrounds are hidden. You will also need to have some objects in your map delineated to match up the Google image with your map. In the example below, the roads and school building have been drawn. The image below shows a few easy-to-see features that should show up on the aerial. You may have more things drawn but the ones drawn here can be used to get the aerial in the right place.
These are the two things that you want to have overlaying each other properly. To do this, go to the Background Map menu and click Open. (This can also be done in the screen to Manage.) Find the file that you saved of the aerial and click on it. You will get the screen below.
Choose the highest resolution and then click OK. You will then have the aerial image behind the contours and what you have drawn on your map. In some cases, the size of the imported aerial is either too small or too large to use easily. In that case, go back to the Manage Map screen, delete the aerial that you just added and then try getting the aerial again with a different Draft scale. This may take some trial and error but it is not hard.
The roads and school building on the map are not one on top of each other. The next slide will show how to fix this.
To adjust the background map, go to the Background Map menu again and click Adjust. Your cursor will be a + and in the lower left hand corner there will be a command to click a point on the background map. Once you click on a point on the background map, the lower left hand corner prompt will say click on your map. You click the similar point on the map you are creating. Repeat this process for one or two other points and then press Enter. Generally the first time you do this, things won t line up precisely. To improve the precision, just repeat the Adjusting by the steps given above. First Attempt Second Attempt
Note: Because the Google Earth image is not georeferenced, it is best NOT to use this image as the gospel truth. It should be used as one of the tools to be used while field checking. Do remember to save the file periodically so you don t lose your work.
After you have drawn the contours with your own set of symbols and want to finish the map, you need to do a few things. You need to hide the OCAD-generated contour symbols. You do this by clicking on the symbol and then going to the Symbol menu and clicking on Hide Object. Continue for each of the three contour features. Then you need to edit the symbols that you have used so that they look like contours (which they are). To do this, go to the Symbol menu and click edit. Then, change the color and the width of your new contours to appropriate values of color and thickness. When you click OK, all your contours will change to the appropriate color. If it doesn t look the way it should, go back and re-edit. You can use the default contour width to guide you. To do this, click on the contour symbol and to the Symbol menu and then click edit. Note the width of the default contour and now you know how wide to make yours.
One last thing, if you want to modify how one of your background maps looks, you can go back to the DEM menu. You then click on the thing that you want to change and a new background map will be produced. OCAD created these background maps when it processed the Lidar data and you may want variants of those. In order to use the new background and not the old one, you need go to the Background Map menu and then click Manage. You will now see all the background maps that are available. You should hide the one you don t want (by clicking on the eye on the left side of the screen) and making sure the eye is visible for your new screen. With OCAD 2018, which is now by subscription instead of purchase, there has been an upgrade in the way that the contours are rendered from the Lidar data. They now seem to be better at representing the terrain and may make redrawing the OCADrendered contours simpler. As always, technology is ever-changing. This presentation was produced by Peter Goodwin with the editorial assistance of Jim Arsenault and Janet Tryson.
This is a sample of what you get after it is processed. The yellow colors in this view come from the Classify Vegetation Height.tif background map.
