Blender 3D Basics Ch. 1

Blender Movies Big Buck Bunny Sintel Tears of Steel

Blender Rendering Basics Opening Blender you start of with a cube The dot with dotted lines represents lamps hitting the cube The Cone with a solid black triangle on top represents the camera Hit Render on the tool bar This gives you the camera view complete with lighting and shadows Blender figures how the light will affect the object

Animation Throughout the Years Felix Turns the Tide Felix the Cat had a silent movie made 3 weeks Most of the animation was done by one person who essentially had 1 month to figure out how to animate and shoot each movie How realistic does each movement look? How did they stage the background? How did they use the camera? Does the design of the movie remind you of another genre?

Plane Crazy-1928 This was the first Mickey Mouse animation. Mickey Mouse was in response to Universal studios luring away most of Disney s animators. Since Disney could not find a distributor the film was never released. Thus Steam Boat Willie is credited as the first Mickey Mouse movie. Plane Crazy was retrofitted with sound.

Plane Crazy Questions What differences do you see in how the characters move and look compared to Felix? What differences do you see in the background? Is the camera used differently in Plane Crazy? Does this help tell the story? Did distortion help make things more dramatic?

The peak of Animation-1938 In 1938 Fleischer Studio was the number 2 animation studio releasing Popeye. Notice the difference in the complexity of the motion of the characters. Examples of the following: Secondary Motion Arcs Anticipation Follow Through Exaggeration

Computers for Animation At MIT in 1961, Sketchpad was developed which was the first real time interactive computer graphics system, like Blender. What kind of graphics and 3D animation do you see? What kind of input devices do they have?

Animation in the 1970 s Triple-I was one of the few companies expieremting with computer animation for film. Triple-I was one of the teams that made the original Tron. What equipment did you notice that they used? What do you notice about the 3D logos? How does there animation compare with the previous animation?

Animation in the 1980 s Cindy is the first whole body human character Notice the quality of modeling; the Star Wars X- wing fighters compare to earlier Datsun s cars.

Finally Pixar in 1984 They became the first place to combine traditional animation techniques with computer technology. Pixar s first animation was Adventures with Andre and Wally B, directed by a former cel animator from Disney. Compare this to Triple I s work. Why are the trees so similar?

Why it is was Revolutionary It took 10 super mini-computers and 1 supercomputer to render the film. It was the first computer animation to use motion blur. The film also was the first computer animation to have used animation principles seriously. Animation principles used: anticipation, staging, straight ahead action and pose to pose, follow through and overlapping action, slow in and slow out, arcs, secondary action, timing, exaggeration, solid drawing, appeal

Uses of Blender and 3D Imaging Create 2D animations. You can use a camera to flatten out 3D into 2D. TV and Videos. Blender was originally designed for local TV stations and advertisements. Films and Pre-visualization. Blender is quick and easy to use. Web Animations. Games. Blender has its own game engine, but Blender files can also be imported into other engines.

Uses of Blender and 3D Imaging Flight and Driving simulators. Blender has a physics package available. Architectural Walkthroughs. Virtual Sets and Green Screen graphics. Many more
