Oberndorf Courthouse Drive City Hall, Building #1 Municipal Center Virginia Beach, VA August 2, Reading Road Virginia Beach, VA Dear Mayor Oberndorf, The residents of Park Place in Virginia Beach, who have signed this petition, are Naval Air Station Oceana's FANS -- Friends, Advocates, Neighbors and Supporters. We who have signed the petition believe this Master Jet Base should remain open and fully operational. Now, as the perpetrators of terrorism target the United States and her allies, it is important that citizens support our military and its efforts to keep our country safe. NAS Oceana plays an essential role in the defense of our nation as the patriots stationed there train for and engage in dangerous missions overseas. We support their efforts and request that NAS Oceana be removed from the BRAC list of those bases considered for closing. Park Place is a 12-year old neighborhood of approximately 120 homes. Brxause we live close to the base and hear the "Sound of Freedom" fiom time to time as the jets take off and land, it is important that we residents voice our strong support for this important Naval base. Unfortunately, it seems that Ihe vocal few who oppose NAS Oceana receive the majority of the media attention and press coverage. We submit this petition as evidence that Virginia Beach residents living in close proximity to this important facility support its mission and continued existence as a Master Jet Base. As the English writer Edmurtd Burke is quoted, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." We support the good men and women of NAS Oceana who are doing something vital, defending our nation, often at great personal risk. We urge the good men and women of the BRAC Commission to recognize the strength of the Master Jet Base, NAS Oceana and its significant military role. And, we respectfully petition that the members of the Commission remove NAS Oceana from the list of installations targeted for closing. Thank you, Mayor Oberndonf, for taking our original petition to the BRAC hearing. We have informed Senator George Allen, who has agreed to present our faxed petition to the Commission, that you will be carrying the petition with the original signatures. Please tell the Commission tlhat our petition springs from a spontaneous grass roots support for NAS Oceana and inform the Commission members that we close neighbors of NAS Oceana support and take pride in the installation, and the men and women assigned there.
