Using ICT Levels 1, 2 & 3 A Digital Talking Storybook Desirable Features: Presenting Music and Sound Assessment Focus Film and Animation Express Evaluate Exhibit Pupil Notes Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Task Description In this task, pupils work individually or in a small group using an ipad and the Lego Movie Maker app, to produce a short, stop frame animation, related to a curriculum topic, for a particular audience. Depending on the level at which the pupil is working, the animation may include a combination of still images, text and sound. 1
Using ICT Levels 1, 2 & 3 A Digital Talking Storybook Desirable Features: Presenting Music and Sound Prior Knowledge/Experience Depending on the level at which they are working, pupils should have experience of: using the ipad to take still images; creating a plan/storyboard; and some experience of working in Lego Movie Maker. Resources ipad with Lego Movie Maker App installed (or similar app for other tablets). Materials for creating storyboard. Materials for creating models. Props as required. A desk lamp if available. A stand to hold the ipad steady (one can easily be made from Lego bricks or books). Managing the Task After previewing other animations and discussing them your pupils are going to work individually or in a small group to produce their own short animation. They will talk about what they are going to make their film about. Pupils should plan/storyboard their movie with a particular audience in mind. Pupils at Level three should produce a storyboard. Backgrounds, props, artwork, model making etc. should be completed prior to the actual filming. Having a table lamp and a stand to hold the ipad steady will make the filming a lot easier. It is possible to make a simple stand with Lego blocks or a few books. The teacher will find the instructions provided in the App useful. Depending on the level at which they are working pupils should: Choose a title and credits for their animation. Compose and record their images within the Lego Movie Maker App. Add music and sounds if appropriate. Make some editing decisions. Choose an appropriate speed for their animation. Save their animation. Evaluate their animation and make any changes if required. Plan Pupils should have opportunities to view short animations before planning their own. Pupils should work as a group to discuss and generate ideas for a story. They should have time to experiment with model making. Do Backgrounds, props, artwork, model making etc should be produced before filming. Pupils should select a title and add credits at the start of their movie. 2
Using ICT Levels 1, 2 & 3 A Digital Talking Storybook Desirable Features: Presenting Music and Sound Pupils should set the scene and take photographs of the models in graduated poses from a static point (it is important to secure the ipad with a stand). The resulting movie should then be edited appropriately within the App, by adding effects, sound effects, some text, music and finally adjusting the speed. Depending on the level at which they are working, pupils should save, store and retrieve their work appropriately. Review Pupils should be given the opportunity to show their films and talk about their own and others work. Pupils should identify any improvements that might be made and change their work if appropriate (Level 3 and above). Evidence for External Moderation As well as submitting the final product, please include; any evidence of planning (Level 2) storyboard (Level 3) short pupil evaluation (Level 3) 3
Using ICT Levels 1, 2 & 3 A Digital Talking Storybook Desirable Features: Presenting Music and Sound Assessing Pupils Responses to the Task The first column of the Assessment Criteria Grid sets, in the Requirements for Using ICT that are covered in this task. Alongside this are the Levels of Progression and the Using ICT Desirable Features for Film and Animation at Levels 1 3. These Desirable Features have been produced as guidance for teachers to consider when observing a pupil and assigning a level to a piece of work. When coming to a holistic judgement of the pupil s level of Using ICT competence, teachers should ensure that these Desirable Features are used in conjunction with the Using ICT Levels of Progression. Assessment Criteria Grid Using ICT Requirements Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Express create, develop, present and publish ideas and information responsibly using a range of digital media and manipulate a range of assets to produce multimedia products. Pupils can: express ideas by creating pictures and composing text or adding own voiceover; Pupils can: create and edit text onscreen, combining images and/or sound; Pupils can: communicate and develop ideas by creating and editing text onscreen combining this with an Appropriate selection of images and/ or sounds; Evaluate talk about, review and make improvements to work, reflecting on the process and outcome and consider the sources and resources used, including safety, reliability and acceptability. talk about their work; and talk about how to improve their work; and make modifications to improve their work; and Exhibit manage and present their stored work and showcase their learning across the curriculum, using ICT safely and responsibly. print their work. save their work. save using file names and select work to showcase learning digitally. Pupils should demonstrate, when and where appropriate, knowledge and understanding of e-safety including acceptable online behaviour. 4
Using ICT Levels 1, 2 & 3 A Digital Talking Storybook Desirable Features: Presenting Music and Sound Desirable Features Film and Animation Level 1: look at and talk about examples of still images and moving images, for example, look at photographs that the teacher has taken or view a short animated film and talk about what they see; take photographs with a digital camera, for example, take photographs on an ipad as part of a topic they are doing in class; and view photographs onscreen and talk about them, for example, look at the photographs which the teacher has put onscreen or which they have taken and talk about them. Level 2: use suitable software to work with pre-loaded images or take still images of objects or models; and arrange the images into a sequence to develop a narrative and record a voice over if appropriate, for example, take photographs of an object or person in graduated poses or positions to create an animation. Level 3: use a storyboard to plan the order of the images required for a simple animation or film; use suitable software to produce a simple animation or film using still photographs or self-created images, for example, make a film on How to Make Pancakes, an animation using toys such as Lego or plasticine characters or images that the pupils have created ; add a narration, sounds or music to the film or animation; begin to add features such as titles, transitions or effects; and begin to use moving image language, for example, talk about the shot sizes you have chosen to use. 5
Pupil Notes You are going to work with a partner or on your own to make a short Lego Movie using a model, toy or some Lego. Part 1 Look at the animations your teacher has shown you and talk about them. Think about your animation and a story you would like to tell. Choose a toy that you can move, some Lego or make a plasticine model. Make a background or stage to place your model on and place the ipad on the stand in front of the stage. With the help of your teacher, open the Lego Movie Maker app, choose Make a Movie and add a title and credits for your movie. Choose a background for your title slide. Take some photographs of your model. After each photograph move your model a little bit. If you can, add some music. Save your movie. Show it to your teacher or a friend and talk about what you have done. 6
Pupil Notes Part 2 Look at the animations your teacher has shown you and talk about them. Think about the animation you are going to make and plan a story you would like to tell. Choose a toy that you can move, some Lego or make a plasticine models. Make a background or stage to place your model and any props on and secure the ipad in the stand in front of the stage. Open Lego Movie Maker, add a title for your animation and your name or names and select Done. Choose a background style for your title frame. Take photographs of your model, moving it a little bit after each photograph. You may use some of the tools at the top of the page to focus your camera or to line up your images. When your photographs are taken you can edit your movie. 7
Pupil Notes You might want to add a speech bubble and some text by selecting add frame and choosing something from the Lego Library. Choose suitable music for your animation. Change the speed of your movie. Save your movie to the ipad. Talk about ways to improve your work and make any necessary changes. Show it to your teacher or a friend and talk about how you might make it better. 8
