IX NORDIC BALTIC AGROMETRICS CONFERENCE June 12, 2014, Kaunas, Lithuania DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE BALTIC NETWORK IN AGROMETRICS Free Mathematical Packages for Educational and Research Purposes Dr.sc.ing. Tatjana Rubina Latvia University of Agriculture Faculty of Information Technologies
Situation at LUA At the last few years an additional type of lessons laboratory work was introduced on study programs at LUA. During laboratory work students learn to solve different mathematical problems using mathematical package Mathcad and Matlab. The introduction of laboratory work enables to resolve and contribute resolution of following problems: students interest and higher motivation executing homework using computer; inspection of homework s correct implementation and formulation of outstanding issue; learning to work with multi-functional mathematical packages Mathcad and Matlab; solving of mathematical problems using Mathcad or Matlab that students can further apply executing their own scientific or research work. 2
Problems Not all laboratory works can be executed at university. For this reason, students need to install software and require to purchase the software license to be able to execute homework using their own private computer. Mathcad and Matlab are commercial and very costly software tools. Not all functions of Mathcad and Matlab are required for laboratory work execution. 3
Possible solution Different mathematical packages are available for free and are likewise Mathcad and Matlab that provide the same (not all) functions and enable to solve different mathematical problems. For example, 4

Conclusions Freely available software tools provide necessary functionality for laboratory work execution in higher mathematics course. Freely available software tools can be used for data processing in research work. Smath Studio (likewise Mathcad), Scilab and Freemat (likewise MatLab) require more less disk space comparing with multifunctional packages Mathcad and Matlab. 13
