Company Lookup and making a set/portfolio Open the Thomson webpage. Go to Companies Basic Search. Click on the magnifying glass and choose Helsinki, i.e. Exchange equal to HEL.
Click on Search button.
Make Active Set and click Excelin icon. This will open the list of companies with identifiers in Excel. Or Save Set. This will save the set to be used in Excel.
Item Lookup Open Excel. In Excel you can see the Thomson Toolbar. You can use the Item Lookup feature to search through literally thousands of data items and to retrieve the desired ones. Display the Item Lookup dialog by clicking the 'Item Lookup' shortcut button under the 'Lookup' pull-down menu on the Thomson ONE Banker toolbar. To use the Item Lookup feature to see, for instance, all of the Thomson Financial data items that contain the word "Accounts", type that word into the Search box in the upper part of the Items bar. See the results in the Item Lookup window below. To insert a single item into your spreadsheet, double click on the item. The selected item will be added to your spreadsheet in the active cell. Alternatively, you can drag-and-drop the item into the desired cell. To select multiple items, use the Control key to select non-contiguous items one at a time or the Shift key to select a contiguous group. To insert the selected items into your spreadsheet, dragand-drop the items into the desired cells.
Adding Items as Fields or PFDL Expressions Items can currently be added to the worksheet as the field text only, or as part of a PFDL formula. The 'Field or Expression' dropdown choice designates how the selected items will be added to the worksheet. If 'As Field' is selected, only the item name is added to the selected cell. If 'As PFDL Expression' is chosen, values from the 'Specify Company by' and 'Specify Period by' sections are included as arguments along with the item in the inserted PFDL formula.
Specifying Companies for Expressions When 'As PFDL Expression' is selected, the Key argument in the resulting PFDL formula can be pre-selected in the 'Specify Company by' section (see picture below). If the 'Key Value' option button is selected, the value entered into the text box ('NOK1V-HE' in the example) will be inserted directly into the formula. A 'Lookup...' button is available for searching the Company Lookup for the correct key, if required. PFDL Function The PFDL() function allows the user to execute any Financial Data Language expression. Syntax is PFDL( database.expression, period, key, options ) Part expression period key options Description Required; String containing the FDL expression to be evaluated. If database is omitted, the default database is used. Optional; Period for which the expression is to be evaluated. If period is omitted, the current period is used. Optional; Specifies the entity for which the expression is to be evaluated. If key is omitted, the expression must evaluate to a set of one or more companies, or an error is returned. Optional; Specifies additional options that control the evaluation of the expression. For example: =PFDL( Ws.TotalAssets,"Y2004", NOK1V-HE,"EUR") returns the Total Assets from Worldscope database for Nokia Corporation for the fiscal year 2004 in euros. You can link all the function arguments into a cell. Tip: When entering arguments that Excel might treat as formulas or cell references, you can prefix the entry with a single quote ( ). Excel will treat everything following the single quote ( ) as text. You will not see the single quote ( ) in the cell.
TFDL Function The TFDL() function allows the user to execute any Financial Data Language expression across a period of time. Syntax is TFDL( database.expression, startperiod, endperiod, key, displaytext, options, "direction", includeperiods,"frequency") Part expression start period end period key display text options direction include periods frequency Description Required; String containing the FDL expression to be evaluated. If database is omitted, the default database is used. Required; Starting period for which the expression is to be evaluated. Required; Ending period for which the expression is to be evaluated. Required; Specifies the entity for which the expression is to be evaluated. Optional; String value returned to the cell that contains the TFDL formula. If displaytext is omitted, the expression is used as the return value. Optional; Specifies additional options that control the evaluation of the expression. Optional; String containing the direction that values will be added to the spreadsheet. If direction is omitted, the values are added down. This argument can be "up", "down","right", or "left". Optional; String containing whether periods are to be added before or after the data, or not at all. If include periods is omitted, periods are not added. This argument can be "none","before", or "after". Optional; String containing the frequency for which the report should be run. If frequency is omitted, the server determines the proper frequency based on the starting and ending period sent. The frequency argument is only effective with a daily starting period, otherwise it is ignored. This argument can be "annual","quarterly","monthly","weekly", or "daily". Rebase Data Enter "1" for Yes. Rebase Value Enter "100" for the value to be rebased to 100. For example: =TFDL( Sales,"1Jan1990","1Jan2000","NOK1V-HE", Sales: ,"NAN","right","after") will return the text: 'Sales: '
in the cell of the TFDL formula, and will return each annual Sales figure from the fiscal year 1998 to the fiscal year 2000 (with #NA values returning as blanks) for "NOK1V-HE, with values added to cells to the right of the formula when calculated. Periods would then added, starting in the cell to the southeast of the formula cell. Another example: =TFDL( DS.ReturnIndex, 1-Jan-00, 31-Dec-04, C ,"Return Index","","down","before") Returns the return index for Nokia stock quoted in Helsinki Exchange from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2004
SFDL The SFDL() function allows the user to execute any Financial Data Language expression for a set of companies. Syntax is SFDL( database.expression, period, displaytext, options,"direction") Part expression period display text options direction Description Required; String containing the FDL expression to be evaluated. If database is omitted, the default database is used. Optional; Period for which the expression is to be evaluated. If period is omitted, the current period is used. Optional; String value returned to the cell that contains the SFDL formula. If displaytext is omitted, the expression is used as the return value. Optional; Specifies additional options that control the evaluation of the expression. Optional; String containing the direction that values will be added to the spreadsheet. If direction is omitted, the values are added down. This argument can be "up", "down","right", or "left". For example: =SFDL( Ws.TotalAssets,"Y2004", Total Assets ,"NAZ","right") will return the text: 'Total Assets ' in the cell of the SFDL formula, and will return the Total Assets for the fiscal year 2004 (with #NA values returning as zeros) for any desired set of companies in the cells to the right of it when calculated. Tip: When entering arguments that Excel might treat as formulas or cell references, you can prefix the entry with a single quote ( ). Excel will treat everything following the single quote ( ) as text. You will not see the single quote ( ) in the cell. To execute SFDL, Click on the Calculate button
and check the Data Download (SFDL) radio button. The blow box will pop up There are three ways of entering the set To build a set by keying in identifiers one by one; Bring up a saved set on the web server; or specify a cell range on the spreadsheet. After using the Data Download (SFDL) button to add entities into the Set Selection window, users can further editing the set by removing some companies then clicking on OK to execute
