2 What are fractions? Fractions are parts of whole things. We use fractions every day! Zack played really well in the first half of the match! The time is quarter past twelve. Mia is ½ years old. Somebody has already eaten three-quarters of this pizza! Images: ThinkStock
3 We write fractions using a numerator and a denominator. The numerator tells us how many parts we have. The denominator tells us how many parts something was (or is) divided into. There are three pieces left. There were four pieces. There are five green buttons. There are eight buttons altogether. The There is one piece of cake left. cake was cut into six pieces. 5 If the denominators are the same, adding and subtracting fractions is easy. Did you know that we can add and subtract fractions? If the denominators are different, we have to change the fractions so that they have a common denominator ? ?

7 fraction numerator denominator common denominator Fractions are parts of whole things. cancel simplify decimal decimal point Cancelling fractions is when we divide the numerator and denominator by the same number This is the top number in a fraction. It tells us how many parts we have. Simplifying fractions means finding an equivalent fraction where the numerator and denominator are as small as they can be. This is the bottom number in a fraction. It tells us how many parts something was (or is) divided into. Decimal numbers contain a decimal point. They might also include tenths, hundredths and other numbers smaller than one. 0. Different fractions that all have the same denominator. This makes it easier to order, add and subtract them. A decimal point separates the whole numbers from the numbers that are smaller than one..0.0.
