2 Objective: To add and subtract decimals by applying the Law of Sameness and applying place value. To multiply and divide decimals. As well as learn Powers of 10 and scientific notation.to be able to use the 10 trick to multiply by powers of 10. To be able to turn any number into scientific notation, and to be able to understand the number being discussed in scientific notation. Virtue/Skill: You will be able to handle money correctly when the register doesn't work. To later apply this understanding to adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing variables. To learn one way in which trail activities work in this class. Science uses scientific notation when measuring and describing many things, distances or forces that are really big or really small. Law of Sameness: You can only add or subtract things that have the same name. 2

6 Powers of Ten When you multiply by powers of 10, the number gains place value, simply put the decimal moves to the right the number of times there are 0s in the power of 10 number and if there are extra spots they are filled with 0s. ex x 10 ex x 100 ex x When you multiply by a decimal power of 10, you are really dividing by powers of 10, and the number loses place value, simply put the decimal moves to the left the number of times there are 0s in the power of 10 number and if there are extra spots they are filled with 0s. ex x.1 ex x.001 ex x Scientific Notation When a really big number or small number need to be discussed, they are rounded to three digits, and the number is turned into a number between 1 and 10 using powers of ten. ex x ex x ex x 10 7 If the exponent is positive move that many places to the right, so the number is bigger If the exponent is negative move that many places to the left, so the number is smaller. ex x 10 9 ex x 10 8 ex x 10 7 ex x
