AADL v2.1 errata AADL meeting Sept 2014 Software Engineering Institute Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, PA 15213
V2.1 Errata Additional applies to allowances Inconsistency in reference/applies to path interpretation No default value for Deadline Task duration and hybrid automaton ports Transfer of aggregate data Name paths Flow implementation refinement Abstract feature with classifier Stack size for partitions Flows with optional connection declaration Flows across modes 2
Changes: applies to of property definitions Properties applicable to abstract features No default applies to abstract features We do have default applies to abstract component Fan_out_Policy: port -> feature Transmission_Type (Pull, Push): port -> feature Input_Time: port -> feature Output_Time: port -> feature Input_Rate: port -> feature Output_Rate : port -> feature Latency: port -> feature Actual_Latency : port -> feature Defaults can be a source of error We could require explicit declaration to abstract and feature 3
Changes: applies to of property definitions Properties applicable to buses Any component involved in connection bindings Latency: virtual bus, virtual processor, system, (flow, connection, bus, processor, device, memory) Actual_Latency : virtual bus, system, device, memory, processor, abstract component Transmission_Time: virtual bus, virtual processor, system, (flow, connection, bus, processor, device, memory) 4
Changes: applies to of property definitions Modeling of sampling network protocols Allow Period property on bus, virtual bus Period: virtual bus, bus No more default value SEI::Is_Partition, SEI::Partition_Latency Migrate SEI properties to property sets reflecting the purpose of the properties CPS properties (weight, electrical power, hydraulics, ) Model properties 5
Inconsistency in reference and applies to paths The issue: Properties can be declared in properties section and attached to subcomponents, connections, features, Properties can have references and applies to paths When in the properties section the starting point for references and applies to paths is the enclosing classifier When the property is declared directly with a subcomponent the applies to starts with the classifier of the subcomponent, but the reference starts with the enclosing classifier In case of feature groups the applies to points into elements of the feature group For connections, flows, etc. it does not make sense to start the applies to with the classifier Solution References are interpreted the same way as applies to paths Applies to is not useful for properties directly on connections, flows, (items without sub-structures) 6
Usefulness of Default Value in Properties No default for Deadline property Currently default is that deadline is same as period Problem: I may want to introduce a period but let the user know that they have not specified the deadline General issue Be careful when using default values for properties. Should we eliminate the default value? 7
Transfer of Aggregate Data Issue Transfer of data from multiple sources as single message AADL V1 specification Feature group with property indicating intended transfer as single message Flexibility of switching between aggregate and individual message transfer AADL V2 specification Outer component with port that has a data component with subcomponents Users explicitly connect an inner port to the data subcomponent of the outer port Manual change of model to change transmission protocol Desirable Treat the issue as a protocol issue Bind collection of connections to an appropriate virtual bus (protocol) 8
Name paths Used in BA, constraint expressions, applies to, and property references #propname to identify property name vs. model name from within annex, start with core and back into annex From core or general expression into an annex, e.g., Paths of what Component hierarchy Nested feature groups Starting point of reference path Declaration location Enclosing classifier Use location Properties on subcomponents Annex statements associated with model element 9
Thread: Duration and reserved port names Issue: Threads other than background are assumed to run infinitely Proposed correction: Introduce Duration property. Introduce final port General: port for each of the hybrid automaton states 10
Flow Implementation Refinement Definition of flow_implementation_refinement is missing Is it needed? You can only associate property values Proposed solution: Remove the flow_implementation_refinement 11
Abstract feature with classifier Issue: abstract feature currently allows for feature prototype, but not classifier system s prototypes fp: feature d; features f1: feature fp; --ok f2: feature d; -- not ok end s; data d end d; Proposed correction: Allow classifier. Do we want to say port without the specific port type? Abstract feature includes bus access. We had it in V2.0 but removed it. 12
Stack size for partitions The Stack Size can represent the stack size required for a partition. The property can apply to virtual processor components. Issue: related to virtual memory Action: Revisit with binding and virtual memory discussion 13
Flows across modes Flows are currently limited to a single mode, when we have models with modes. There is a legality rule that requires all elements of the flow to be available in the modes for which the flow applies. It is sometimes desirable to model an end-to-end flow that includes a transition between modes. In other words, the flow starts out in one mode and after a mode transition continues in another mode. Proposed solution: Allow elements of a flow to be member of only one of the modes listed for the flow. We may want to mark the flow appropriately with a property or have the tool indicate that it is a multi-modal flow. Action: ok, but assess cost of implementation. 14
End to End Flows Specification Ability to define end to end flow without the connection Specify flow with existing information and refine later with connection information system implementation sys.impl subcomponents a : process A; b : process B; flows fl : end to end flow a.out_flow -> b.in_flow; end sys.impl; 15
Subcomponent output as Transition Trigger Discussion item: Incoming port arrival events and self events can trigger mode transitions. Currently OSATE does support outgoing events from subsystems to trigger mode transitions, but V2.1 document does nto include this. Already an errata? 16
Conditional Mode Transition Trigger Discussion item: We claim that the BA should allow conditions other than the default or condition. What does that mean in terms of mode triggering events not being persistent? 17
Input Time and Dispatch Triggering Ports Discussion item: dispatch triggering ports and input time Non-triggering ports are frozen at Dispatch or specified input time. Only triggering port actually causing dispatch is frozen at dispatch or specified input time. Freezing ports with queues removes elements from receiver queue to internal queue It is ok to freeze actively triggering port at specified input time Note that data ports can trigger dispatch Are events triggering mode transition staying in queue? 18
Service Call to Freeze Subcomponent Out Ports Discussion item: We have a service call to freeze the input. Do we need one for freezing output from subcomponents? Came up in context of event ports triggering mode transitions. 19
