COMBAT CODING 101
BEFORE WE GET STARTED BASIC TERMS TO KNOW JavaScript Python Basic Syntax Object String Functions Arguments Property While- Loops Varibles
LANGUAGE Most commonly used coding languages JavaScript most commonly used, mainly used for websites and web pages Python improve code readability, used to write scientific and numerical software Ruby- designed to be a fun and productive way of writing code, designed with coders in mind rather than computers, high- level language, Java- high- level complied language and is designed to run on all operating system, typically known to make Android app Perl- practical language that was designed for text processing.
BASIC SYNTAX Basic spelling & grammar of a language Java, JavaScript, Ruby etc Attention must be paid to order for the code to actually run seamlessly Defines a combination of objects, strings and functions
CORE VOCABULARY for you to play CODE COMBAT Object- a character or thing that can perform actions String- a type of programming data that represents text. In both Python and JavaScript, strings are represented by text inside quotes. Open door Monster Functions- an action performed by an object moveright() Arguments- information passed onto a method in order to modify what the method does. Typically inside of the parentheses () hero.moveright(3) This will make your hero move to the right, three times. Property- data belonging to your object Variable- a symbol that represents data, and the value of the variable can change as you store new data in it. While- loop- used to repeat actions without the player needing to write the same lines of code over and over. Python: looped code must appear underneath the while true statement JavaScript: looped code must appear in the enclosed curly bracket {}
LESSON #1 Your hero starts at a particular place and has to navigate to the goal without running into spikes or being spotted by orges Code must contain all the instructions from start to finish- JUST LIKE A STORY LESSON #1- Activity In pairs, use the following functions to help your partner go through the class maze to find the prize. Write the code down on a sheet of paper. Walk your partner through the maze to get to the prize. Remember: use your arguments, partner.pickupball() partner.turnright() partner.moveforward() parnter.movebackwards() partner.turnleft() object.function(argument)
LET S GET SET UP Set up your account. 1. Go to codecombat.com (link also attached to my blog) 2. Select the tab that says I m a Student on the right hand side 3. Enter the class code: PowerLampJob & ShelfSingThing (int) 4. Select your character/hero Journal each entry is worth 5 marks. must be handed into the Hand-In folder after every class MUST save it as brookesihotafeb1, brookesihotafeb2, brookesihotafeb2 etc if it is done incorrectly,.5 is reduced all information is required when filling out your journal..5 will be reduced if work is missing each class you will have 1-3 new questions you will need to answer into your journal Today s questions What is the difference between an object and a function? What is one benefit about running a code?

Intro to JavaScript Terms you will need to know when learning JavaScript! Data type- Characters Represents a single character ( B ); System.out.println( B ); Data type- Boolean Two values that represent the truth of a value of logic Data type- Integer (int) Positive and negative numbers including zero Variable Stores a value Must have a specific data type Ie. Int myluckynumber = 16; myluckynumber is the variable and 16 is now stored as the int type
Intro to JavaScript Comment Allows you to describe code or keep notes Both single and multiple line comments Single Line Multiple Line // Coding is fun! /* Despite the complexity, Coding is fun! */ Modulo Represented in Java by a % sign % is the remainder of diving two numbers White Space- easy way for you to keep your coding organized One or more characters Space, tab, enter or return
Intro to JavaScript Equality Operators- are used to test equality == is equal to!= is not equal to Rational Operators Compare data types that have a defined ordering like numbers Rational operators will always return a Boolean value of true or false <, >, <=, >= Ie. System.out.println(5 < 7); REVIEW/SUMMARY Data Types are int, boolean, and char. Variables are used to store values. Whitespace helps make code easy to read for you and others. Comments describe code and its purpose. Arithmetic Operators include +, -, *, /, and %. Relational Operators include <, <=, >, and >=. Equality Operators include == and!=.
