5 Fundamental Principles of OOP Inheritance Inherit members from parent class Abstraction Define and execute abstract actions Encapsulation Hide the internals of a class Polymorphism Access a class through its parent interface 5
6 Inheritance Child classes inherits the characteristics of the parent class Attributes (fields and properties) Operations (methods) Child class can extend the parent class Add new fields and methods Redefine methods (modify existing behavior) Inheritance has a lot of benefits Extensibility Reusability Provides abstraction Eliminates redundant code 6

12 Abstraction Abstraction is a way of generalization Ignoring irrelevant features, properties, or functions and emphasizing the relevant ones Abstraction = managing complexity Allows us to represent a complex reality in terms of a simplified model Interfaces provide abstractions You only need to know how to use it You don t have to know the internal implementation Abstract the properties of the object to keep only what we need Looking at an object, we see those things that have meaning to us Abstraction highlights the properties of an entity that we need and hides the others 12

14 Encapsulation Encapsulation hides the implementation details No interface members should be hidden Benefits of encapsulation Ensures that structural changes remain local: Changing the class internals does not affect any code outside of the class Changing methods' implementation does not reflect the clients using them Encapsulation allows adding some logic when accessing client's data E.g. validation on modifying a property value Hiding implementation details reduces complexity easier maintenance 14
15 Polymorphism Polymorphism = ability to take more than one form (objects have more than one type) A class can be used through its parent interface A child class may override some of the behaviors of the parent class Polymorphism allows abstract operations to be defined and used Abstract operations are defined in the base class' interface and implemented in the child classes Declared as abstract or virtual 15
