1 Assignment 2 Due Thursday 7/3 at 10:00 AM Working with Strings II (25 points): Download the file StringMaster2003.java from the course web page (the assignments page). You will find code which produces the following output to the screen: Welcome to StringMaster 2003! Menu: 0: Output a string backwards 1: Replace every occurrence of one word with another 2: Count the number of vowels in a string (excluding y) 3: Exit You will write the rest of the code. Your code must conform to the following specifications: 1. You must use SavitchIn.readLineInt() to get the user s menu choice. 2. You must then prompt the user to enter a string. Read it in using SavitchIn.readLine(); 3. If the user chose 0 or 2, no further input may be requested. 4. If the user chose 1, prompt first for the word to be replaced, then for the word to replace it with. Use SavitchIn.readLine() for the input. Do not prompt for any further information. 5. For number 1, your program must output a reasonable message (and not crash) if the word to be replaced does not appear in the input string. 6. For number 2, vowels are defined as any of the following characters: a, A, e, E, i, I, o, O, u, U 7. In any of the cases 0,1,2, or 3 you must output a relevant message to the screen containing the appropriate result. (any kind of farewell message for 3 is fine.) 8. You must add a loop so that until the user enters 3 the program will keep returning to the menu. By this I mean that after the user selects 0,1,or 2 and your program performs the requested task, it then prints out the menu of choices again and is ready to perform another task. 9. You must make the comment at the top of the program more informative, and include your name, etc.

The user chooses 1 and enters the string Java Java matlab Java with the word Java to be replaced by WeP&, the output is WeP& WeP& matlab WeP& and the menu appears again. 3. The user chooses 2 and enters the string I like vowels. The output should be that there are 5 vowels, then the menu should appear again. Don t forget good programming style! Object Oriented Programming (25 points) You work for a software company that is designing a new video game, specifically a new role-playing game (RPG). The game will feature different types of characters (such as Warriors, Magic users, monsters, etc.). Your assignment is to write a class for objects of type Warrior that will keep track of a Warrior s statistics, and provide some methods for the game developers. The Warriors statistics are: 1. attack an integer value representing the attacking strength of your Warrior. 2. defense an integer value representing the ability of your Warrior to defend himself or herself. 3. health an integer value representing your Warrior s health. If Health reaches zero your Warrior is dead. 4. name a String holding your Warrior s name. 5. magicattack an integer value representing the strength or your Warrior when performing a magic attack. 6. magicdefense an integer value representing the strength of your Warrior when defending against a magic attack. 7. experience an integer value representing how experienced your Warrior is. As a Warrior s experience increases, his or her statistics will improve. In battle, a Warriors statistics would be used to determine the outcome of an attack. For example, suppose one Warrior (warrior1) is fighting another Warrior (warrior2). warrior1 attacks warrior2 with a non-magic attack. A fight simulation program (you don t have to write one) might determine the result of that attack by doing the following: Take warrior1 s attack value and add in a random component so that the damage for his attack is warrior1 s attack value plus-or-minus up to 50% (randomly). Use warrior2 s defense value plus-or-minus up to 50% (randomly) to subtract from the damage from warrior1 s

3 attack (and use this difference to figure out the result of the attack.) If the result of this subtraction is positive, the attack does damage equal to 10 times the difference (damage is taken off of warrior2 s health). If the result of the subtraction is negative, the attack misses and no damage is dealt. You will implement some methods to support encounters such as the one described above. The first four statistics already have instance variables declared in Warrior.java (which you should download from the assignments page.) You must do the following to Warrior.java: 1. Add the instance variables magicattack, magicdefense, and experience. 2. Modify the default constructor to give the values 5,3,and 0 to the variables magicattack, magicdefense, and experience respectively. 3. Modify the other constructor to take in three more integer values as arguments (the order should be magicattack, magicdefense and then experience) and add code inside the method to initialize magicattack, magicdefense, and experience. 4. Uncomment the line public double attackvalue() (when you do the program won t compile anymore until you program the method the compiler will notice that you haven t given a return value for the method.) 5. Add code to the method attackvalue() that returns a random number between (attack minus 50%) and (attack plus 50%). The method should return a double. You can use Math.random() to get a random (double) number greater than or equal to 0.0 and less than 1.0. For example, if attack is 9 your method should return a random number between 4.5 and Add a method defensevalue that returns a random double between (defense minus 50%) and (defense plus 50%). 7. Add a method magicattackvalue that returns a random double between (magicattack minus 25%) and (magicattack plus 25%). 8. Add a method magicdefensevalue that returns a random double between (magicdefensevalue minus 25%) and (magicdefensevalue plus 25%). 9. Add a method levelup() that increases attack and defense by 2, and increases magicattack and magicdefense by 1. This method should not return anything. 10. Modify the method tostring() to print out magicattack, magicdefense, and experience in the same way the other statistics are output.

4 11. Add your name, etc. to the comment at the top of the program. Remember that style counts! You may want to test out your methods by running a program that creates a new Warrior and calls some of the Warrior methods. I have written a simple testing script called WarriorTester.java, and you can add code to it and use it as a tester. Download it from the assignments page I have implemented a tostring() method for the Warrior class, and you will modify it (see item 10, above). This is useful because now Java has a meaningful way of turning a Warrior object into a string. You can type System.out.println(warrior1); (assuming you ve created a Warrior object called warrior1) and Java will print the string returned by tostring() to the screen. Bonus points (2 points): Write a program FightSimulator.java to fight one Warrior that the user controls against one Warrior that the computer controls. Start your program by creating the two Warriors. Next your program should loop until one of the warriors is victorious (the other warrior s health is zero) with each warrior taking turns. On the user-controlled warrior s turn you should give the options to attack (use the description above to determine the result of an attack) or rest (and add ten points to the warrior s health.) On the computercontrolled warrior s turn you should randomly choose whether the warrior attacks or rests (it doesn t have to be a 50/50 chance of attack or rest, you decide.) After each warrior s turn you should output some information to the screen, describing the result. Be creative and have fun implement options to do magic attacks if you want, or give experience at the conclusion of a battle! Pull this off and I ll give you two bonus points you wrote a text-based video game! Print out and submit paper copies of StringMaster2002.java and Warrior.java. If you do the bonus, print out and submit FightSimulator.java also. You will also be submitting a copy of your.java files electronically (there is a web-based submission system we will use.) I will give you more instructions about this soon.
