If yu are a Milestne XPrtect NVR surveillance system administratr, meaning smene wh will have administratr rights and respnsibilities n the Milestne XPrtect NVR surveillance system nce the system has been delivered and installed, see the Milestne XPrtect NVR Administratr s Getting Started Guide instead. This guide des nt cntain relevant infrmatin fr surveillance system end users. Mre detailed infrmatin abut using XPrtect NVR is available in the XPrtect Administratr s Manual as well as in XPrtect s built-in help system (see page 11). Nte, hwever, that when the XPrtect sftware is used n an XPrtect NVR, the manual and help system will differ slightly frm what yu will experience n yur XPrtect NVR. This will primarily be evident in the descriptins f installatin and the licensing mdel as well as in the descriptins f the number f cameras and ther hardware devices yu are able t add t the system. 4 Abut XPrtect NVR XPrtect NVR is a unique ut-f-the-bx IP vide management sftware slutin delivered cmplete with cmputer hardware cntaining pre-installed perating system and surveillance sftware. It all cmes in ne package with n need fr additinal sftware installatin The XPrtect NVR is pwered by Milestne s market leading XPrtect vide management sftware. It includes a wide set f easy-t-use features that allw users t view live and recrded vide, and rapidly investigate incidents and exprt related vide material frm the XPrtect NVR. The preladed sftware and system cnfiguratin wizards ensure minimal deplyment effrt, XPrtect NVR s high perfrmance hardware and disk system ensures truble-free peratin and secure strage f vide recrdings. Milestne XPrtect NVR includes: Cmputer hardware, which is a ready-t-use PC, pre-installed with ptimized XPrtect sftware and Micrsft Windws 7 Prfessinal perating system. XPrtect NVR Management Applicatin, which yu use fr cnfiguring yur surveillance system. The Management Applicatin is pre-installed n the PC when yu receive it. XPrtect Smart Client, which yu use fr viewing live and recrded vide. The XPrtect Smart Client is als pre-installed n the PC when yu receive it, ready t shw vide frm yur netwrk cameras. If yu wuld rather view vide n anther PC, yu can easily install an XPrtect Smart Client n anther PC. See page Errr! Bkmark nt defined. fr further infrmatin. XPrtect Transact, which links yur live vide with yur transactin data. XPrtect Transact is available fr installatin n the desktp f yur XPrtect NVR. Fr infrmatin n hw t get started with XPrtect Transact, see the User s Manual, available at f. Yu must buy a Transact license in rder t activate and use the functinality. XPrtect Mbile, which allws yu t view live and recrded vide frm XPrtect NVR n a mbile device. The XPrtect Mbile server installer is available fr installatin n the desktp f yur XPrtect NVR. Fr infrmatin n hw t get started with XPrtect Mbile, see the User s Manual, available at _Users_Manual_en-US.pdf. XPrtect NVR supprts the market s widest range f cameras. A cmplete list ver supprted cameras and ther hardware devices is available at The XPrtect NVR lets yu chse between eleven different languages in the Management Applicatin. 5 Get the XPrtect NVR Up and Running The XPrtect NVR cmes with a temprary license that has a grace perid f 30 days. Yu must activate the license befre the end f this grace perid. Activate the License 1. Ensure that yur system is cnnected t the Internet. 2. On the Management Applicatin's tlbar, click File, Activate License Online. 3. When yur license file (.lic) is successfully updated, click Clse. Yur XPrtect NVR is nw activated and ready t use. Yu can see any updates in the Hardware Device Summary table. Once activated, yur system n lnger needs t be cnnected t the Internet. Online Activatin Errr Messages Under rare circumstances, yu may receive ne f the fllwing errr messages during nline activatin. Shuld yu receive ne, the fllwing list f Prblems and What t d will help yu identify the prblem: Unable t access license server, Errr activating license, License nt allwed, Feature nt registered, Feature already in use, Failed t lgin. Prblem: Online activatin was nt pssible, either due t a prblem n the nline activatin server itself, a prblem with yur cnnectin t the nline activatin server, r t a prblem with the specified infrmatin (such as username r passwrd). What t d: Cntact Milestne Supprt (supprt@milestnesys.cm), wh will investigate the issue fr yu. If activatin has already taken place n anther system, activatin shuld nt be necessary, as anther system is already running with yur activated licenses. If yu believe that this is wrng, cntact Milestne Supprt (supprt@milestnesys.cm), wh will investigate the issue fr yu. Hw the XPrtect NVR Is Cnfigured When yu first start it, the Milestne XPrtect NVR is cnfigured as described in the fllwing. Fr mre detailed infrmatin, see the XPrtect Administratrs Manual. Micrsft Windws Disk 1 partitin (1 HDD C:Windws / D:Data; 2 HDD C:Windws / D: Data / E: Data). Windws Firewall has been disabled (incl. Actin Center ntificatin). 6 Windws Update has been disabled. Updates are available thrugh manual Windws Update. BIOS AC recvery is set t Last State. Virus Scanning N anti-virus prgram is installed n the XPrtect NVR when yu receive it. Virus scanning must be avided in specific cntexts n XPrtect NVR, since virus scanning will use a cnsiderable amunt f system resurces n scanning surveillance system data, ntably data in databases cntaining recrdings. Virus scanning may als temprarily lck each file being scanned, which may further impact system perfrmance negatively. Virus scanning may even crrupt recrding databases, and render yur surveillance system recrdings useless. Therefre: D nt use virus scanning n flders cntaining recrding databases (by default D:\ and all flders under that lcatin). D nt use virus scanning n archiving lcatins. D nt use virus scanning n files with the fllwing file extensins (which are all surveillance system-related):.blk.idx.pic.pqz.sts.ts The rganizatin in which the XPrtect NVR will be used may have strict guidelines re. virus scanning, but it is imprtant that the abve lcatins and files are exempt frm virus scanning. Cnsult the rganizatin s IT system administratr if in dubt. Milestne Sftware Fr yu cnvenience, an administratr user has been pre-defined in the XPrtect Management Applicatin. User name: admin Passwrd: admin The default recrding and archiving paths are set t D:\ 8- and 16-camera views have been pre-defined in the XPrtect Smart Client, making it easy fr XPrtect Smart Client users t begin viewing vide frm the surveillance system. Language packs fr the XPrtect Smart Client are installed n the server, giving the user easy access t change the language used in the Smart Client. Page 6 Get the XPrtect NVR Up and Running

7 When XPrtect Smart Clients are installed n ther PCs than the XPrtect NVR, language packs can easily be dwnladed frm the XPrtect NVR. The Remte Client, which users access by cnnecting t the XPrtect NVR, is als available in several languages. Make Sure the XPrtect NVR Is Up-t-date Service Releases The XPrtect NVR is installed with the latest released sftware at the time f prductin. T check if a sftware service release fr the XPrtect NVR has been made available in the meantime, we recmmend that yu visit Upgrade Vide Device Drivers Vide device drivers are small prgrams used fr cntrlling/cmmunicating with the cameras and ther hardware devices cnnected t the XPrtect NVR. Vide device drivers are installed n the XPrtect NVR at the time f prductin. Hwever, new versins f the vide device drivers scalled Device Packs are released and made available fr free n Milestne Systems website frm time t time. T check if a new Device Pack has been made available since the XPrtect NVR was prduced, visit (lk under Supprt > Dwnlads) and dwnlad the latest Device Pack. When updating vide device drivers, there is n need t remve the ld vide device drivers first; simply install the latest versin n tp f any ld versin n the XPrtect NVR. 8 Cnfigure the XPrtect NVR thrugh the Management Applicatin The Management Applicatin is the XPrtect NVR s server-side user interface; all management f yur surveillance system is handled here. In the Management Applicatin, wizards guide yu thrugh cmmn tasks, such as adding cameras and ther hardware devices t the system. Detailed cnfiguratin, withut wizards, is f curse als pssible. Yu can cnfigure multiple cameras, events, users, etc. in ne g. Yu access the Management Applicatin by dubleclicking the Management Applicatin desktp shrtcut. Alternatively, use Windws' Start menu: Start > All Prgrams > Milestne > Management Applicatin. Select Language T select required language fr the Management Applicatin, d the fllwing: 1. In the Management Applicatin s menu bar, select Applicatin Settings > Applicatin Behavir t pen the Applicatin Behavir windw. 2. In the Applicatin Behavir windw, select Language, and then select required language frm the list. 3. Click OK. 4. Restart the Management Applicatin. After restart, the new language settings will becme effective. Add Cameras and Other Hardware Devices Yu add cameras and ther hardware devices, such as vide encders, t the XPrtect NVR system thrugh a wizard. The maximum number f cameras yu are able t add t the XPrtect NVR depends n the specific versin purchased. If vide encders are t be used n the system, bear in mind that vide encders can have mre than ne camera cnnected t them. Fr example, a fully used fur-prt vide encder will cunt as fur cameras. If micrphnes are attached t hardware devices, they are autmatically added as well. Nte that it is nly pssible t use ne micrphne at a time with XPrtect NVR. Befre adding hardware devices, make sure yu have cnfigured their IP addresses, passwrds, etc. as described by the hardware manufacturers. Then d the fllwing: Page 8 Cnfigure the XPrtect NVR

9 1. In the Management Applicatin, click the large Add Hardware Devices buttn t start the Add Hardware Devices wizard. 2. Select a hardware detectin methd, and fllw the wizard. Tip: We recmmend the Express ptin: it scans the netwrk fr relevant hardware devices, and helps yu quickly add them t the system. Nte, hwever, that the Express ptin nly scans fr hardware devices supprting device discvery (a methd with which hardware devices make infrmatin abut themselves available n the netwrk), and nly n the part f yur netwrk (subnet) where the XPrtect NVR server itself is lcated. Cnfigure Cameras Yu can specify a wide variety f settings fr each camera cnnected t the XPrtect NVR system. Settings include vide frmat, reslutin, mtin detectin sensitivity, where t stre and archive recrdings, any PTZ preset psitins, assciatin with micrphnes, etc. Yu cnfigure cameras under Advanced Cnfiguratin > Cameras and Strage Infrmatin in the Management Applicatin s navigatin pane. PTZ Cameras Yu can easily use PTZ (Pan/Tilt/Zm) cameras with XPrtect NVR. Such cameras can be perated manually as well as by selecting pre-defined presets. Check the Device Pack Release Ntes, available frm the Dwnlads sectin f the Milestne website, t see exactly which PTZ features are supprted fr the PTZ camera hardware and firmware used in yur custmer s installatin. Yu cnfigure PTZ presets and autmated PTZ peratins individually fr each PTZ camera: Under Advanced Cnfiguratin in the Management Applicatin s navigatin pane, select Cameras and Strage Infrmatin, then duble-click the required camera. Tip: If yur custmer has analg PTZ cameras attached t vide encders, such analg PTZ cameras can be used t. Hwever, they require a bit mre initial cnfiguratin: In the Management Applicatin s navigatin pane, expand Advanced Cnfiguratin > Hardware Devices, duble-click the required hardware device and specify PTZ Device prperties. 360 Lens Cameras If required, yu can als use dedicated 360 lens cameras fr 360 panramic images with XPrtect NVR: First, under Advanced Cnfiguratin in the Management Applicatin s navigatin pane, select Hardware Devices, then duble-click the hardware device t which the 360 lens camera is attached, and verify that 360 functinality is enabled. Then, under Advanced Cnfiguratin in the navigatin pane, select Cameras and Strage Infrmatin, duble-click the required camera, and cnfigure the 360 view. Cnfigure Scheduling & Archiving Des yur custmer want sme cameras t transfer vide t XPrtect NVR at all times, and ther cameras t transfer vide nly within specific perids f time, r when specific events ccur? With Page 9 Cnfigure the XPrtect NVR

10 the scheduling feature, yu can specify this as well as when t send ntificatins t users f the system. Archiving is an integrated and autmated feature that helps stre recrdings beynd the capabilities f XPrtect NVR s standard database. With XPrtect NVR s default settings, archiving takes place nce a day r whenever databases becme full; yu can specify additinal archiving times if required. Yu cnfigure scheduling and archiving under Advanced Cnfiguratin > Scheduling and Archiving in the Management Applicatin s navigatin pane. Cnfigure Events & Output Events, fr example based n input frm sensrs, can be used t autmatically start/stp recrdings, t autmatically send ntificatins, etc. Output can be used fr activating external units, such as sirens r lights; utput can be triggered autmatically by events. Users can als activate events and utput manually frm their clients. The use f mst input events, and all types f utput, requires that external sensrs are wired t input/utput (I/O) cnnectrs n the hardware device in questin, and that I/O peratin n the hardware device is supprted by XPrtect NVR. Check the Device Pack Release Ntes, available frm the Dwnlads sectin f t see if I/O peratin is supprted fr the hardware and firmware used in yur custmer s installatin. Yu cnfigure events and utput under Advanced Cnfiguratin > Events and Output in the Management Applicatin s navigatin pane. Once yu have cnfigured events, the events can be used with features thrughut XPrtect NVR, regardless f where sensrs, users, etc. are physically lcated. Cnfigure Clients & Users Tw client applicatins, the Smart Client and Remte Client, are included with XPrtect NVR. T quickly and easily cnfigure hw client applicatins shuld be able t access the XPrtect NVR server, and which users shuld be able t use the client applicatins, start the Cnfigure User Access wizard. Nte, hwever, that the wizard gives users access t all cameras n the system; if different rights are required fr individual users, yu shuld use Advanced Cnfiguratin instead: Under Advanced Cnfiguratin > Server Access in the Management Applicatin s navigatin pane, yu can specify whether yu want clients t be able access the XPrtect NVR server frm the internet, hw many clients shuld be able t cnnect simultaneusly, etc. Under Advanced Cnfiguratin > Users in the navigatin pane, yu can cnfigure wh shuld have client access, and with which rights. 11 Use the Built-in Help System XPrtect NVR features a very cmprehensive built-in help system, with help and advice n many levels. The built-in help system in XPrtect NVR cmes frm the XPrtect sftware. When the XPrtect sftware is used n an XPrtect NVR, the help system will differ slightly frm what yu will experience n the XPrtect NVR. This will primarily be evident in the descriptins f installatin and the licensing mdel as well as in the descriptins f the number f cameras and ther hardware devices it is pssible t add t the system. Yu will find, hwever, that the majrity f the help system s cntent applies fr XPrtect NVR t. The help system will prvide yu with infrmatin n: Cncepts (such as What is a PTZ camera?) Prcedures (such as Hw d I cnfigure a PTZ Camera?) Basic facts (such as Can I use the character # when I name a PTZ camera?) Useful tips (such as keybard shrtcuts, etc.) The help system matches the tasks yu wrk n, and a search feature quickly lets yu find related infrmatin. T access the help system frm anywhere within the Management Applicatin, click the Help buttn in the tlbar. Alternatively, press F1 n yur keybard. The Smart Client features a similar help system.
