2 FLAME SHUTTER SPECIFICATION Product Overview The Flame Shutter range is a Compact tubular driven fire shutter that provides a fire protection barrier for 1 4 hours. The Flame Shutter provides a defence against the spread of fire and can be used as a security door on a day to day basis. The compact design allows it to be installed in areas where traditional fire shutters are not possible. The system can be linked to fire alarms to ensure automatic closing in case of fire detection and battery backup in the event of power failure. The Flame Shutter Compact range is manufactured to BS EN & BS 476 Part 22 standard. The product was tested and approved by Exova Warrington Fire, report no This product is capable of providing up to 60, 120 or 240 minutes integrity performance if subjected to a fire resistance test in accordance with the standards mentioned above. Common Use The Flame Shutter has a compact shutter box and is commonly used over kitchen serveries, store rooms and reception counters. Used in schools, surgeries, hospitals and commercial offices, where restricted headroom requires a compact shutter box. 3 Construction Curtain As standard a single skin 75mm scrolled lath. 22 gauge (10kg/m2) 1hr Fire Rating 20 gauge (13kg/m2) 2hr Fire Rating and 18 gauge (16.5kg/m2) - 4hr Fire Rating. A compact 50mm flat steel slat is available on 1 hour and 2 hour rated shutters. The advantage of the 50mm lath is it coils smaller, but it is an additional cost. Weight: kg/m2. The curtain is galvanised as standard or can be powder coated to RAL or BS colour at an extra cost. Bottom Rail T sectioned steel bottom slat 68mm high x 74mm deep. Guide rails 3mm thick galvanised steel channels 50mm or 65mm deep, depending upon shutter width mounted on steel angles for fixing. (See size parameters) Shutter Box Galvanised steel endplates welded to the Guide Angle in a flag arrangement with a two piece box assembly. Boxes are supplied in sleeved sections to allow for expansion in 250mm, 300mm and 350mm sizes depending upon shutter height. Axle Catcher At larger sizes it is necessary to supply a barrel support, the affected sizes are shown on the size charts. In the event of a fire, the high temperatures that the shutter is exposed to will cause the barrel to sag under its own weight. The barrel support limits this movement and maintains its integrity. You will need to allow enough room above the shutter for the barrel support frame and ensure that the end user understand what they will be receiving. This is not an optional extra but an essential part of the products design. Page 2 of 8

4 Flame shutters that require an axle catcher are not available as reveal fix. Finish: Galvanised as standard or can be powder coated to a RAL or BS colour at an extra cost. Motors & Control options: The fire shutter is powered using a 240V AC tubular motor which is supplied as standard with a 2.5m 4 core cable. The motor comes with a 5-year parts warranty. As standard the Flame Shutter comes with a Switch to operate the shutter daily. In the event of a fire alarm, somebody will need to manually close the shutter, to provide a fire barrier. The Flame Shutter can be automated, which will automatically close in the event of a fire alarm. This reduces the risk of somebody manually closing the shutter. The shutter can be wired into the Fire Alarm or a Local Heat/Smoke Detector. When the fire alarm is activated it will automatically close the fire shutter. 5 Installation Criteria Basic assumptions Shutter position It is assumed that the shutters are in the completely closed position once activated. Floor support It is assumed that the floor or surface that the curtain closes onto will be able to support the curtain weight in the event of a fire. In what orientations can the product be installed? Face fix, soffit fix and reveal fix The Flame Shutter can be fixed to the soffit of the supporting construction, within the reveal of the opening instead or face fixed to either face of the wall. For reveal fixing, the shutter is confined within the constraints of the aperture. It is acceptable to fix shutters in this manner subject to the provision of the correct allowance for expansion for the supporting components. In particular and in the situation where the endplates are fixed to the inside of the wall, the barrel and axle assemblies must be allowed to expand unrestricted. In these situations, the guides may be exposed or recessed within the structure. Recessed guide rails Where it is required for the guides to be fitted within the concrete/masonry structure it is not necessary to provide an allowance for expansion of the guides on the understanding that the guides are fully fixed and grouted with cement mortar. Orientation The appraisal for the Flame Shutter is based on the details recorded during a fire resistance test where the rolling shutter was exposed on the side likely to provide the least period of fire resistance. The appraisal therefore is appropriate to exposure from either side. Page 4 of 8

6 What can the fire shutter be fastened to? Supporting construction It is assumed that the Flame Shutter will be fixed to appropriate masonry/concrete constructions that have a fire resistance of at least that specified for the Flame Shutter and are capable of supporting the weight of the Flame Shutter for the required period. Alternatively, it is assumed that the Flame Shutter will be fixed to appropriate structural steel members that are clad with a proprietary fire protection system such that they have a fire resistance of at least that specified for the shutter and are capable of providing adequate support to the Flame Shutter for the required period. Alternatively, it is assumed that the Flame Shutter will be fixed to appropriate structural solid timber members that are clad with a proprietary fire protection system; such that they have a fire resistance of at least that specified for the shutter and are capable of providing adequate support to the Flame Shutter for the required period. Steel/Timber supporting structure The fixing of the shutter components to the steel/timber members must not reduce the ability of the fire cladding system to protect the members. Fixings through protection systems such as boards and fibrous sprays should be fitted with steel sleeve spacers such that they do not compress or crush the protection. Where the structural steel members are protected with an intumescent coating additional fire protection must be added around the connecting shutter components to compensate for the area of coating that is trapped between the steel members and the shutter components and therefore cannot intumesce. Any gaps between the fire cladding system and the shutter components must be fitted with a fire rated seal system that has been shown by test to be suitable for the application and the fire resistance period required. The structural steel members may be contained within a partition system but must still be clad with a proprietary fire protection system. The vertical structural members providing the support at the sides of the shutter must be continuous and secured to the structural floor s slabs above and below the shutter. The horizontal member over the opening must be connected to the vertical structural steel members and must be deep enough to accept the fixings for the shutter. Alternatively, more than one horizontal member may be fitted. Page 5 of 8

7 Fixing Criteria Grade of bolts The fire testing report, states that the fixings MUST be a minimum of Grade 4.6 steel. Grade 4.6 bolts have an ultimate material strength of 400N/mm2 and the yield (or proof) stress is 60% of the ultimate strength, 240N/mm2. Product performance The appraisal of the Flame Shutter is only valid provided that no other modifications are made to the tested construction other than those described in the product assessment report and that it is installed as per the criteria mentioned above. The fire shutters must be fixed to appropriate masonry/concrete, wood or steel supporting constructions that have a fire resistance of at least that specified for the fire shutter and are capable of maintaining adequate support for the required periods of up to 240 minutes. 8 Warranty The operation of the fire curtain along with the finish of the curtain, guide rails and box is guaranteed for a period of 12 months. The tubular motor is guaranteed for a period of 5 years against faulty materials and workmanship. Maintenance There is a requirement under The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 for the buildings responsible person to ensure all fire safety equipment is maintained. Maintenance and testing of the product The period between checks is at the discretion of the customer however we recommend the following: Weekly - Check all the system for correct operation. Test operation of systems, self-contained detectors and check the integrity of the shutter. 3 6 months - Inspection and test of the system by a competent engineer. Annually - Full inspection and test of the system by a competent engineer, clean self-contained detectors. Replace any Batteries in the control panel*. Page 7 of 8
