1 For Immediate Release 12 December, 2014 Canon Launches New EF mm f/ l IS II USM Next-Generation High Mobility Professional Full-Frame Image Stabilized Super Telephoto Zoom Lens Featuring New Air Sphere Coating, Superior Image Quality and Performance Canon is proud to announce the new EF mm f/ l IS II USM the highly anticipated successor to the hugely popular EF mm f/ l IS USM featuring significant advancements including new Air Sphere Coating (ASC), improved image stabilization performance, class-leading 0.98m minimum focusing distance with 0.31x magnification* 1 and rotating-zoom-ring design to improve image quality and enhance usability, setting a new benchmark for performance from a compact super telephoto zoom lens. Featuring Canon L-series weather resistance and rugged construction, this is a highly portable and adaptable telephoto zoom lens for professional and advanced amateur photographers who demand a versatile zoom range and mobility for various shooting tasks such as sports, nature and wildlife, motor sports, aircraft and landscape photography. Improved optical performance and New Air Sphere Coating (ASC) technology The versatile and highly mobile EF mm f/ l IS II USM offers a wide zoom range from mm to cover a wide variety of scenes flexibly with one lens and reduce the burden when traveling. It features a newly developed optical design with 21 lens elements in 16 groups, with the use of 1 fluorite lens element and 1 Super UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) lens element to provide excellent correction of chromatic aberration across the entire zoom range, ensuring high levels of image resolution and contrast comparable to the renowned EF mm f/2.8l IS II USM. Additionally, a 9-bladed circular aperture can help produce beautiful, softly blurred backgrounds. A first for the EF lens range, the lens incorporates a new Air Sphere Coating (ASC). ASC is a combination of the existing vapor-deposited multi-layer coatings with an ultra-low refractive index outermost layer. The ultra-low refractive index layer is a film

2 that includes microscopic nano-sized air spheres arranged in regular structure. The resulting structural refractive index provides an ultra-low refractive index significantly lower than that of the existing vapor-deposited coatings. This can effectively reduce ghosting and flare that cannot be prevented with conventional vapor-deposited multilayer coatings. Improved Image Stabilization and class-leading minimum focusing distance* 1 To reduce the effects of visible camera shake on long-distance shots, EF mm f/ l IS II USM features an optical Image Stabilizer to provide shake compensation up to 4-stop shutter speed* 2 a significant improvement from the previous model. It features IS Mode 1, 2 and 3, with IS Mode 1 suitable for standard shooting and IS Mode 2 good for panning, while IS Mode 3 designed for sports photographers to capture erratic, fast-moving action provides shake compensation only during the actual exposure. These modes help provide outstanding results in a wide variety of shooting situations, all serving to satisfy the personal preferences of photographers based on the type of IS they desire. The lens provides photographers with the same level of flexibility to capture close-up shots as telephoto ones. For those who want to work as closely as possible to their subjects, the minimum focusing distance of the lens has been reduced to just 0.98m resulting in maximum magnification of 0.31x. Thanks to floating mechanism, high image quality is ensured throughout the entire range of focusing distance. Close-up shooting of small subjects that was difficult until now with telephoto lenses is made possible. Benefited from the fast and quiet auto focusing with the adoption of rear focusing design, ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor), high-speed CPU and a high-speed control engine, photographers can be assured that every shot they capture is in stunning clarity. Redesigned zoom and professional operation EF mm f/ l IS II USM has been optimized to provide photographers with everything they need at their fingertips. Enhanced following extensive feedback from professional photographers, the lens uses a rotation-type zoom ring, similar to the one found on EF mm f/4-5.6l IS USM, which rotates by only 95 degrees when changing from wide end to telephoto end. This allows for more precise adjustments, easier handling, and consistently excellent weight balance during handheld photography. The new mechanism also allows photographers to adjust

3 zoom torque based on personal shooting preferences via a dedicated zoom touch adjustment ring. This can provide a smooth action for fast zooming, as well as the ability to lock the zoom at your desired focal length, preventing image composition from changing by accidentally touching the zoom ring. In addition, the lens also features an integrated tripod mount ring for smooth switching of shooting orientation and a removable tripod mount foot for reducing the overall lens size and weight to facilitate handheld shooting. The new dedicated lens hood ET-83D featuring a cleverly placed and convenient operation window allows photographers to easily adjust specialty filters like Circular Polarizing Filter without removing the hood.
