3 Safety: 1. Do Not Disassemble base cover plate Hazardous voltages exist in the circuitry of the base of this microscope. Electrical shock or damage to the microscope could result. 2. Check the Voltage 1) The fixed input voltage is marked on the microscope base. Please make sure that your local supply voltage is the same as marked voltage. If changes are required, please contact a qualified technician, and adjust the switch on the circuit board inside of base for either 110V or 220V to be in accordance to the local voltage. 2) Make sure the local power socket is equipped for a 3 prong plug which will provide proper grounding for the microscope. 3. Burns and Fire 1) Caution! Bulbs get very hot during illumination. Do not touch bulb while it is hot, a serious burn may result. 2) Change bulbs only after they have cooled for 30 minutes. 3) Any burnable substance must be kept away from bulb during illumination or a fire could result. 4. Bulb changing 1) Before changing the bulb, switch off power supply and pull out the plug to avoid electrical shock. 2) Use the correct halogen bulb. (12V20W regular in upper, 12V20W projection in lower.) 3) When changing bulbs, either wear gloves or wrap the bulbs with a cloth. Do not touch the glass of the bulb directly. Fingerprints and/or spots will shorten the bulb life dramatically. If bulbs are handled with bare skin, clean with cloth soaked in alcohol then dry with a soft cloth. 5. Moving and storage 1) Handling or moving the microscope should be done with extreme care. Make sure the microscope is supported with both hands. Place the microscope on a flat and stable surface. 2) Switch off power before moving. 3) Working environment requirements: Indoor temperature: 32ºF ~ 104ºF (0º~ 40ºC) Max relative humidity: 85% 4) Avoid placing the microscope in direct sunlight or bright room lighting. The brighter environment affects the quality of the image while in use. 5) When the microscope is not in use, cover with dust cover. 6. Careful Operation 3

4 1) This microscope is a sophisticated optical instrument. Avoid sharp blows to the microscope. Extreme blows can result in optic misalignment creating poor image quality. 2) Avoid touching the lens surfaces. Standard magnification is 40X- 630X. There are two body specifications. The difference between them is that a OMM200 is a binocular body microscope and the OMM200T is a trinocular body microscope. The OMM200 and the OMM200T have a continually variable lighting system, Kohler illumination, a iris field diaphragm and a aperture diaphragm. The center of the field diaphragm is adjustable. The microscope is equipped with coaxial vertical and horizontal moving mechanical stage, with coarse and fine adjustments. The OMM200 is suitable for the routine metallurgical observation for industrial, research and teaching environments. 4

6 Assembly: Install the parts in order, referencing to Fig. 2 1) Take the microscope main body out from the foam box and put it on the working table. 2) Install the projection bulb in base. (Use bulb changing directions in Instrument Operation) 3) Take out the EPI-illumination from the foam box and remove the dust cover, and then incline the V-type adapter slightly to insert it into the top adapter of the microscope main body and tighten the screw on the left of the adapter to affix the EPI-illuminator. Connect the lamp power line to the power output adapter in the base. 4) Install the binocular or trinocular body on the adapter of the EPI-illuminator. Tighten the screw on the right of the EPI-illuminator to affix the body. 5) Insert the 10x (or 16x) eyepieces to the tubes. 6) Insert four objectives to the nosepiece in sequence form low magnification to the high magnification. Insure that the objectives tighten to the surface of the nosepiece. 7) Set the stage plate on the stage and secure it by two clips. 8) When using the filters, insert the filters into the grooves of the lamp housing near the EPI-illuminator. Operation: 1) Connect power Check the input power behind the base and confirm that the switch is in accord with the local voltage. Press the plug into the socket. Turn on the power switch, the bulb in the lamp housing of the EPI-illuminator should be lighted. Adjust it to obtain suitable brightness. 2) Sample viewing For metallurgical or semi-conductor integrated circuit board observation, take a small piece of specimen (thickness< 45mm) and placing the specimen on the stage plate, with the viewing side of the specimen upwards. Move the specimen by the mechanical stage into the exact place under the objectives. When viewing pellets or powders, take a small quantity and place directly on the stage plate for observation. 3) Use of the viewing body The operation of the OMM200 or the OMM200T is as following: a. Adjust the interpupillary distance by pulling the left and right cover board on the tubes to make the distance between the eyepieces the same as the distance between the viewer s eyes and the images in the viewing field 6

7 become superimposed. When the images are superimposed, in which the viewing from the left and right eyepieces become one round image, the markings on the graduations on the cover board should be noted so that becomes a reference point for future viewing. b. Adjust the diopter of the right tube to and make a note of the reading. c. Observe specimen through the right eyepiece only and adjust the coarse and fine adjustments for clear image. d. Observe specimen through the left eyepiece only and adjust the diopter on the left eye tube only for clear image. 4) The above adjustment is very important to obtain par focus. Usually it is easier to use the 10x objective to focus and search the specimen. After focusing, change to another magnification objective to view the specimen with little, if any, refocusing. 5) The tension of the coarse and fine focusing mechanism is adjusted by the tensional adjustment ring, which is used to prevent the stage from naturally sliding down. If the adjustment is too tight then the focus adjustment knob will have too much drag to feel comfortable. If too loose the stage will slide down. Usually the tension is adjusted at the factory and needs little adjustment. 6) Adjustment of the EPI-illuminator. The rotating ring (19) can turn. When using the filter, turn the rotating ring to make the gap on it align with the grooves in the body and put the filter into the grooves. If not using the filter, turn the rotating ring to cover the grooves to protect from dust and hood the light. a) Aperture Diaphragm Turn the aperture diaphragm pull-rod to adjust the numerical aperture. To improve the distinguish rate and the contrast rate of the image, the smaller the opening of the diaphragm the better. If the field contrast is not good, it is better to diminish the size of the aperture diaphragm. To maintain enough brightness, increase the brightness of the bulb. b) Field Diaphragm Turn the field diaphragm pull-rod to adjust the field aperture. By diminishing the field diaphragm, it reduces the distorted light interference of the tube and improves the image contrast. Adjust the two knurled screws on the EPI-illuminator to center the field diaphragm. Changing the magnification of the objectives, it will be necessary to adjust the diaphragm centering. c) Filter selection Light blue, light yellow and light green filters are supplied with the microscope. Light yellow and light green filters improve the color balance and the light blue filter improves the color temperature of the illumination. 7) Bulb changing The instrument is equipped with two 12v20w halogen bulbs. There is one in the lamp housing of the reflected illuminator and one in the base. When changing bulbs, turn off the power to cool the bulbs (wait 30 minutes). For the reflected illuminator, loosen the 7

8 knurled screw on the right of the lamp housing, push the back cover to the left and at the same time, rotate at a counter clockwise direction around the center of the left ridge to take out the back cover of the lamp housing. Remove old bulb. For the lower bulb, loosen the knurled screw on the door on the base and swing open, then pull bulb with reflector (one piece) straight out. (Please note: Do not touch the new bulb with your fingers! Use a cloth or wear a glove to insert new bulb. Oil from your skin will shorten the bulb life dramatically. If touched, clean bulb with alcohol and wipe with a dry cloth.) 8) Bulb centering adjustments for the reflected illuminator only. Bulb centering was adjusted at production to ensure even illumination. The user should make a bulb centering adjustment when installing a new bulb. Adjust the aperture diaphragm and the field diaphragm to the maximum, focus with the 4x objective and the 10x eyepiece, loosen the knurled screw in the middle of the lamp housing back cover and move it up and down. Screw the knurled screw on the right of the lamp housing in or out to make the bulb move left or right to obtain even field illumination. Then tighten the knurled screw in the middle of the lamp housing back cover to affix bulb in a correct position to obtain even illumination. Maintenance: 1) Keep the instrument in a dry and cool place. 2) Clean microscope part and accessories with a clean cloth. Use pressurized air to remove dust from eyepieces. 3) Cover the microscope with the dust cover when not in use. If the instrument will not be used for an extended period, remove the objectives and put them in their moisture proof containers. Cover the tubes of the eyepieces with the dustproof caps. 4) Do not dissemble the microscope any further than this manual instructs. Call the company where it was purchased for technical help.
