4 3.1 TOP 10 DIY CAMERA SECURITY TERMS YOU NEED TO KNOW! CCTV: Closed Circuit Television. A television system used for private purposes & not for public or general broadcast. IP Camera: An Internet Protocol camera that can be viewed over a network and the internet. High Definition A term used to classify the image quality of TVs, DVD players, security systems and more, and measured in pixels. Greater picture quality with more pixels giving better detail that can be viewed. Video that is better quality than a standard definition picture ie 720p and above is usually considered high definition. Infrared (IR): Infrared Night Vision allows cameras to see in the dark. It is the method of using IR LEDs (Infrared Light Emitting Diodes) as illumination for a camera with a sensor that can see infrared light. Infrared light provides the illumination needed to capture clear images in total darkness or low-light conditions. Infrared Cut Filter: Is a filter applied to security cameras designed to reflect or block mid-infrared wavelengths while passing visible light. They are also used to block IR due to the high sensitivity of many camera sensors to near-infrared light. Image Sensor: The light sensitive chip inside a security camera that can read levels of light & transform them into an image. IP Rating: A system used by manufacturers to describe the ability of their product to resist the effects of dust and water. For example, IP67 = 6 (protected from dust) and 7 (protected from the effects of immersion in water to depth between 15cm and 1m). Pixel: Used in digital imaging, is the smallest controllable element of a picture represented on the screen. It is often summarized as Megapixels (1MP = 1,000,000 pixels) Resolution: Refers to the sharpness & clarity of an image. PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) Camera: An automated camera with the ability to move and zoom remotely. Position a PTZ in a set place and Pan (move left and right 360 degrees), Tilt (move up and down 90 degrees) and Zoom (zoom in and out) using the controller provided or remotely using a software app or DVR controls (when combined with appropriate models). 5 3.2 CAMERA FEATURES Here are some key camera features worth getting to know: Wide Dynamic Range (WDR): A term used to classify the image quality of TVs, DVD players, security systems and more, and measured in pixels. Greater picture quality with more pixels giving better detail that can be viewed. Video that is better quality than a standard definition picture ie 720p and above is usually considered high definition. OSD: Certain Pro cameras have an On-Screen Display function. They use a controller and built-in software to allow you to alter the camera settings and customise what you see onscreen. Television Lines (TVL): This is a measure of the resolution of a video device. The higher the number is, the higher the resolution. 650 TVL or greater is considered high resolution. Pan & Tilt: A motorized camera mounting that will move a camera both horizontally & vertically via electronic signals from a remote controller or Smartphone with software app. Anti-Theft Casing: Sturdy camera construction with a durable stand and a cable managed bracket for easy mounting to any wall or ceiling. Weather Resistant: Weather resistant cameras are able to be used in the outdoors if shielded from direct sun, rain, temperatures, snow & wind. Often measured by IP rating. Page 5

6 3.3 WHAT IS CMOS TECHNOLOGY? CMOS stands for Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor, which is a type of image sensor. CMOS sensors are medium quality sensors that are commonly used in digital cameras & many low powered image devices such as USB webcams. CMOS sensors usually don t handle variations in light conditions as well as CCD 99 have a lower power consumption 99 are better suited to portable applications than cameras that use CCD sensors 99 are generally lower in price, better suiting end-users that need security on a tighter budget CMOS image sensors in security cameras can range from 300TVL all the way up to 1000TVL* for normal applications. Most CMOS sensors have a lower resolution than CCD sensors & therefore can show slightly less clear or sharp images. Swann has developed its own camera sensors, known as SwannTruColor (STC), with high resolution video images ( TVL) & impressive night vision. *Image sensors measure their resolution in TV Lines (TVL) Page 6

3.4 CCD TECHNOLOGY CCD stands for Charge Coupled Device, which is a type of image sensor. CCD sensors are high quality sensors that are commonly used in portable camcorders & similar video equipment.

CCD sensors are high quality sensors that are commonly used in portable camcorders & similar video equipment. CCD sensors can usually handle more variation in light conditions than CMOS 99 are more sensitive so they will work better in low light conditions 99 usually have a higher resolution than CMOS sensors and therefore show clearer, sharper images 99 have a higher power consumption 99 are not as well suited to portable applications as cameras that use CMOS sensors 99 are generally higher in price than cameras with CMOS image sensors CCD image sensors can range from 420TVL all the way up to 700TVL* for normal applications. Some CCD cameras which are used for professional quality applications are fitted with sensors 750TVL* & higher. *Image sensors measure their resolution in TV Lines (TVL) Page 7
