Many Apps Make Sound Work (Some Don t) Douglas MANVELL; Niels SVENDSEN; Tomasz CIELECKI Brüel & Kjær Sound & Vibration Measurement A/S, Denmark ABSTRACT Apps, small programs typically downloaded onto mobile devices, are used to enhance existing or add new functionality, preferably in a simple, user-friendly way, so that you, for example, can use a phone as a desktop computer. In noise, they could be useful in setting up and doing measurements, remote operation, viewing results, processing and reporting. Smart phones are increasingly widespread and a preferred lifestyle accessory, making noise assessment apps attractive. However, apps, and even smart phones, have strengths and weaknesses that make them more or less suitable for this. How can apps and smart phones help provide tools and functions that can reduce cost price, power usage, size and complexity of sound assessment devices while providing application benefit. With data increasingly being stored and used in the cloud, how can they provide a bridge to additional cloud-based applications and information? Apps and smart phones can and perhaps should focus on providing immediacy and convenience where it is needed. This paper investigates the potential tasks, strengths and weaknesses of apps and smart phones, examples of current implementations, useful research areas, views to the future, and an opinion of what factors make successful sound apps work. Keywords: Instrumentation, Environmental Noise Immission I-INCE Classification of Subjects Number(s): 71, INTRODUCTION WHAT ARE APPS? Apps are small programs, typically downloaded by a user to a mobile device, used to enhance existing functionality, or add new functionality, and aimed at doing this in a simple, user-friendly way, enabling you to, for example, do pretty much anything you can do on a desktop computer on a phone. As reference (1) states But fiddling about with a URL bar and managing bookmarks on a mobile phone it still a pretty awkward, cumbersome experience. Which is why many online sites and services now go down the standalone app route, giving them better control of the user experience and, hopefully, making everything simpler and quicker to open and use. Compared to a webpage viewed in a browser, an app gives better access to the device s resources such as its GPS, camera, NFC reader, etc, and can make use of all user interface options, whereas the browser has limitations acessing all functionality and makes it harder to get a smooth user experience, even when they can be accessed. In addition, a browser s user interface is browser specific as opposed to being phone specific which provides native experience of ios, Android etc and thus often makes browser solutions less easy to use. ON the other hand, an app does require local updates. Thus, smart phone apps enable reuse of tools that the majority of people now have at hand to reduce price/power/size/complexity of sound sensors and to add functionality and intuitive tools. The aim being to enable smart phones and tablets in making access to noise and ancillary information convenient and immediate for the purposes of noise assessment, analysis and management. This paper focusses on the use of apps on smart phones with the majority of examples based on environmental noise. 2. AREAS OF USE IN NOISE ASSESSMENT How can apps and smart phones help provide tools and functions that, when used with noise assessment devices, can reduce the cost price, power usage, size and complexity of sound sensors while providing benefit to the application or business processes used. In addition, with data increasingly being stored and used in the cloud, how can smart phones provide a bridge to additional 3116

information and processing applications in the cloud? In noise, apps could prove useful in setting up and doing measurements, remote operation, viewing results and potentially even processing and reporting. The general benefits are that you have a mini-computer at hand with access to: internet for additional data such as weather or even for connection to cloud-based services such as live data processing, presentation and archiving a camera for documenting measurement setup and measurement events, and also for use in QR-code recognition for easier setup, documentation and verification GPS for spatial location (albeit in survey quality), ensuring better documentation. For finer positional resolution, however, for example for sound power measurements around a source, more advanced and accurate GPS equipment is typically required A more intuitive user interface to help control, annotate, document, etc measurements. This is an alternative or supplement to the user interface on a sound level meter where the screen may be limited in size and capability, and the meter s memory has limited capacity, as does its CPU for processing Currently, several commercial applications are available which address one or more of the tasks indicated utilizing specific smart phone features or a range of them. This paper describes some examples of current commercial implementations. 2.1 Setting up and doing measurements Measurements on Smart Phones Previous papers (2) indicate that most measurement instrumentation requires independent verification and accredited calibration, as well as calibration checks (which are often referred to as calibration). This is important to provide indications of measurement uncertainty or through public demand to believe results. To ensure calibrated results, we need to know what the sound sensor product can do this requires independent testing (type approval to the IEC sound instrumentation standard (3)). Instrumentation must be regularly accredited as calibrated through bi-annual testing and verification. On-site, the sensitivity must be verified under suitable conditions using a calibrated acoustic calibrator. The system must provide indications of changes in sensitivity. Initial testing indicates that generic smartphone sound level meter apps installed on any device result in a much wider spread of data than indicated by IEC (3, 4). MEMS microphone specifications primarily limit sensors meeting IEC requirements (4). In addition, a major authority currently requires access to the preamplifier input in order to give IEC (3) type approval, something which is not possible with a MEMS microphone where the preamplifier is integrated. Another main issue is any software in the unit which, when updated, as often it is, can have serious impact on performance. Thus, solutions based on commercially available smart phones are not suited to type approval or maintenance of a stable, approved instrument. Thus, unless software and maintenance is carefully designed and implemented, type approval is out of the question and smart phones are thus excluded from various applications. Having said that, a calibrated, quality smart phone with an app tailored to that specific hardware can be useful as a preliminary indicator. However, the main cost in environmental assessments are not the instrumentation but the man hours required to collate sufficient data of sufficient quality and process the results to enable simple, clear reporting. Hence, the additional cost of more traditional solutions in many cases far outweighs the initial cost savings anticipated with measurement apps on smart phones. On a practical level, no one wants to have measurements interrupted by the phone ringing or other system notifications such as new or SMS, or the arrival of Bluetooth devices or wifi networks, so such solutions are perhaps only practical if the phone is used in flight mode (preventing access to cloud-based functionality) or only for short duration measurements. Nevertheless, there are several commercial solutions available. The majority are consumer-oriented products for ios and Android such as NoiSee (5) and Sound Meter (6) and can be categorized as sound level indicators. With careful calibration, these can be used, generally by the public or by non-experts, to provide indicative sound levels. However, great care should be exercised when utilizing or analysing results. 3117

Other, more advanced apps such as Audio Tools (7) are also designed for use with quality measurement microphones to achieve frequency responses and linearity in line with IEC standards when used with a suitable microphone. However, the above issues and concerns regarding the impact of software updates and variability of hardware from one smart phone to another remain. Figure 1 An example of a sound level meter application on a smart phone Reference (4) recommends further testing of smart phone sound sensors regarding measurement uncertainty in practical scenaria, e.g. as defined by IEC 61672, aiming to provide statistically confident results, determine causes of uncertainty and recommend improvements Supplementary Tools on Smart Phones However, as a supplementary tool to a meter, a smart phone is incredibly powerful and useful. For example, the camera can also be used to document measurement events. Making an app that helps allocate videos, pictures, notes and audio commentary to measurement files thus promises significant easing of annotation of notes and reduces the reporting workload later, as well as the risk of human error. As annotations can be uploaded to a compatible application in the cloud for merging with the instrument data files, the way one can work with meters in the field is transformed. Several commercial applications utilize this (8, 9). 3118

Figure 2 An example of an app that utilizes smart phone functions to supplement measurements Setting up measurements Figure 3 Scanning a QR code engraved on the accelerometer using a transducer smart setup app 3119

In addition to making actual measurements and annotating during them, smart phones can also be used to help setup and by including the necessary documentation (10, 11, 12). Implementing supplementary system tools in smart phones enables the user to utilize the smart phone s in-built camera and GPS to correctly locate and professionally document the sound sensor location, enabling the sound sensor to be simpler and thus cheaper and more robust (8, 9). GPS functionality could also be used to find measurement locations previously used so that one can return to the same location to do comparative measurements and analyse trends. For indoor use where GPS is less accurate and the resolution often insufficient in practice, Bluetooth beacons, placed around the building, provide approximately a half metre in spatial accuracy. Real-time setup can also be eased using QR or NFC software in the smart phone (9, 10, 11) to identify and check the status of individual sound sensors. An example where setting up transducers can be simplified through the use of apps that utilize the inbuilt functionality of smart phones is described here for industrial vibration applications (9). When several transducers have been mounted onto test objects such as vehicle engines or aircraft components, it can be very time-consuming to link them to the measurement software correctly. The tester needs to identify each transducer and trace its cabling through to the data acquisition hardware, before they can manually add information about its alignment and location. Setup has always been a lengthy and confusing exercise where it is easy to mix the transducers up or induce human errors into the many inputs. A transducer setup app can speed this process up, removing the need to trace cables and simplifying it to reduce input errors. The Transducer Smart Setup app can scan the transducer and a usage label using the smartphone s camera, which it uses to recognize the accelerometer, its orientation and location. It can then automatically synchronize this information with the measurement software, so it doesn t matter which transducer is plugged into which input connector. With a modal test involving 100 accelerometers, this can save hours. The app works best on accelerometers and microphones with data matrix codes (also known as QR-codes). A patented algorithm automatically detects the orientation of an accelerometer from the code. For accelerometers and microphones without a data matrix code, the app semi-automates inputs such as alignment and location, saving time and reducing inputs in comparison to traditional setup procedures - and removing the need to trace cables. The data matrix code can also provide immediate access to detailed information for the transducers, such as technical specifications and calibration data when scanned into the smart phone. Figure 4 views of an app that focusses on easing measurement setup When used with cloud-based solutions (12), apps help to provide an interface to functions which can be or are better suited (due to processing power required) to cloud-based software, for example, ensuring that set up information is immediately stored and made available to other users, enabling 3120

them to immediately see set up information. Apps can provide feedback to the user to show that the meter is correctly set up and connected to the cloud service, ensuring that the user knows that the meter is correctly functioning and delivering data to the cloud before leaving the site, providing peace of mind that data is being collected and transferred and avoiding missing data and a return visit to troubleshoot. And, in addition, processes can be simplified through the use of wizards to help guide the user through setup and confirm successful completion of the setup process. 2.2 Remote operation With Bluetooth and wifi, smart phone apps can remotely operate a meter and view results live as they are measured. However, in many cases the user needs to remain close enough to the meter to listen to the sound being measured as well as ensuring that the meter is not stolen, the latter especially inmportant in outdoor measurements! For room and building acoustics, remote control avoids setting an escape time and reducing the time the loudspeaker or tapping machine is active, as well as avoiding cables. This requires feedback in the app on the status of the measurement to know it is completed and preferably, done so successfully. The communication range through walls may still be a challenge and the harder the communication, the more power drain there is on the smart phone. In occupational health as well as room acoustics, measurements can be in enclosed spaces and remote operation helps avoid acoustical interference from the operator, more comfortable operation in high sound level areas which may also be dangerous, and eases measurement in awkward locations. Apps that can manage multiple meters or measurement channels are useful in applications such as building acoustics, transfer function analysis, sound power and other tests. One example of several commercial apps from different suppliers that remotely control a sound level meter is the Measurement Partner Field App (8). An example of a multi-channel remote control app is Sonoscout, a portable multi-channel NVH recorder (13) that aims to provide a simple user interface while offering powerful analysis capability for the validation and use of recorded data on the go, to allow, for example, a road vehicle driver to operate the vehicle while safely managing data collection and verification in order to help reduce test costs. The app works wirelessly in combination with data acquisition hardware connected to a range of measurement transducers. Figure 5 Example of an app that remotely controls a multi-channel, multi-sensor data collection system This aids real-time assessment and control of measurements on an ipad mounted on the dashboard so that the driver can view signals, confirm that the setup is working and providing valid data recording, and mark important events for later use. The ipad can be used to take pictures and videos to document measurements, map the route automatically, using its GPS, and enable the driver to listen to incoming signals at any time to check mounting and quality. 3121

However, nothing comes for free - connecting to an external instrument via wifi or Bluetooth does draw more power. Current solutions to this typically involve external or supplementary power sources such as power banks. 2.3 Viewing results Applications previously available on PCs can also be modified and implemented to run on smart phones or tablets, making the data more accessible and convenient to use for the increasing number of consultants, employees and general public who use a smart phone or tablet for accessing web-based information (14). Thus, the app can provide users who only have or prefer to use a tablet, or a phone even when travelling or immediate access on hand during whenever suitable. Traditional PC or browser applications often include lots of data presented together in one view. With a smaller screen, successful apps change the presentation of data by dividing it into smaller sections such as a page each for the site summary, location information, historical data, background and explanatory information, as well as help. Use of scroll/swipe functionality is very useful for splitting the data into multiple views suitable for a smaller smart phone screen. And font sizes need to be adjusted. In addition, the user interface needs to be modified to utilize the fact that fingers are used as the mouse and that the keyboard is sometime less accessible. For public noise websites, apps can provide an interface to a significantly wider audience, in particular to older generations of users who are usually less PC-savvy while being more comfortable with tablets. Figure 6 Example of an app that is aimed at viewing results With GPS and location identification, apps can start up with links to geographically relevant measurement sites, again enhancing availability. As an aside, it should be noted that, with the uncertainty associated with GPS location measurement, automated reporting tools need to take account of this when adding multiple measurement data, particularly taken at different times, to reports at the same location for comparative purposes and trend analysis. If not taken care of, one risks having a report with multiple measurement locations indicated on aerial photos and maps, even when measurement locations were in fact identical. An alternative that may also make measurement location reporting easier and faster could be with apps that have access to mapping services in the cloud to get addresses to auto tag the location rather than the GPS coordinates. However, not all addresses are suitable for map-based presentation for example, Skodsborgvej 307 Nærum covers a large geographical area and here, the GPS location would in most cases be preferable, particularly if measuring around the property. 3122

Figure 7 Mapping Services in the cloud offer autotagging of measurement data that can ease reporting but may not replace GPS coordinates if eg 4 measurements were done at this address but at locations placed to the North, East, South and West of the factory building 2.4 Processing and reporting Keeping basic data gathering and processing on a type approved IEC instrument and moving other processing functions to apps or the cloud helps keep the complexity, cost and power-draw of a meter low. Even though smart phones are now delivered with more and more powerful CPUs, their processing capability will never be as good as a cloud-based solution. Even though, in many cases, smart phones provide sufficient processing power for a range of useful applications, cloud based processing is probably preferable as it is less susceptible to different hardware/software configurations that are part and parcel of smart phones and apps and thus less costly to develop, document performance of, test and maintain. However, further research in this area is welcomed. Regarding reporting, which in this case is defined as being the presentation of the results and conclusion of an assessment, tradition and corporate and legal precedents and processes are based on printed documents. Thus, the display size available on a smart phone prevents presentation of details and limits the ability to get the overview one gets with a printed report or on a PC screen. Even though apps can be written both for smart phones and for tablets, providing reports in a suitable format, this factor has and probably will continue to limit development of apps for use in viewing, reviewing and approving reports. However, awareness of the availability of new reports such as daily status and test/fail results, alerts on specific issues such as excessive noise or measurement system failure, and the ability to define reports are useful and well suited to the strengths of using smart phones immediacy and convenience. Currently, alerting is usually done by SMS or (11) and not by using apps. However, one could consider this area as promising for future development. 3. APPS, AND EVEN SMART PHONES, HAVE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES As smart phones are becoming increasingly widespread and a preferred lifestyle accessory for an increasing number of people, making apps for noise assessment is attractive. However, apps, and even smart phones, have strengths and weaknesses that make them more or less suitable for these tasks. Being small, smart phone apps can provide a convenient insight into noise measurements as they are easily at hand, don t get in the way and can, with practice, often be held and operated in one hand. 3123

Their size, however, does put restraints onto the user interface, and how and what data is shown. With real-time communication, apps and smart phones are excellent at providing real-time information including that from remote measurements and from cloud-based services with limited latency. Smart phone typically has less computing power than a PC or a cloud service but more processing power than stand-alone sound level meters. Smartphones are getting faster and faster and processing capacity from newer smartphones will be more than adequate for most tasks. However, the biggest problem is the battery life which drops the more processing that is required, the more interfaces are used and when using wireless communication. One really strong feature with is the ability to reuse and present the results of cloud-based processing - this reduces power draw on the phone and exploits the capabilities of the cloud, enabling complex decision making processes to be implemented in the cloud and presented simply and clearly on various platforms including smart phones via an app. As mentioned above, measurement accuracy, its documentation and maintenance, is currently a weakness of smart phones and limits the success of such apps. The fact that an app is uploaded onto a device means that the app must be updated locally in order to get full benefit of new features and maintenance. This is different from cloud-based services that can be centrally maintained without any involvement or attention from users. Since users of apps on smart phones have relatively high expectations to usability and user experience, then apps need to focus on this too. This is why no apps have huge Getting Started manuals. They have to be intuitive enough so that you can just start the app and get to know it through trial and error. Compared with, for example a professional sound level meter s interface and all its features, it has to be super simple. Ergo, limited scope, no manuals, no training! If people use a long time learning an app they give up on it. However, with well-designed apps can add significant value by presenting information clearly, simply and intuitively, and immediately enabling faster response and easier processes. Figure 8 The Big Red Button is an app in is simplest form, offering a single function to support business processes based on user interaction One example of a very simple app that adds value is the Big Red Button (15) which allows an airport to quickly exclude noise and flight data from their public websites in case of an emergency such as a crash. The app can be configured to automatically staff, including specific additional instructions if required, when an exclusion is created. 3124

4. VIEWS TO THE FUTURE Smart phones, and thus apps, provide so much benefit to measuring noise that they are here to stay. Some areas of use will develop faster than others. For example, sound measurement apps were among the first, as were remote control apps. The development of apps for other aspects such as set up and ancillary data gathering are now gathering steam and, here, there is potential for further development. In addition there remains untapped potential for combination and presentation of relevant information to aid decision making processes and enable them to be efficiently done both faster and by staff who are not sitting in from of a computer. Developments in consumer goods is rapid and provides new opportunities for businesses. Voice control is one, enabling non-contact measurement control. Augmented reality, for example by real-time visualization of noise maps and source identification, linked with the orientation of the smart phone so that you can the noise sources offers powerful help to noise control. Smart phone apps could help provide human input and feedback to solutions, for example, observations during assessments or input for complaint management. Smart phones offer immediate access to data in a convenient and intuitive manner. Cloud services offer powerful processing and functionality. With broad band communication becoming more and more widespread and cost-effective, and with the trend towards both the Internet of Things and cloud computing, the face of measuring is changing. Smartphones can provide a bridge to the cloud while in the field both to gather data and to present it. Combining these offers interesting perspectives. Further research into using smart phones to gather and present data in combination with cloud solutions is welcomed and expected. Figure 9 In the future, augmented reality, for example real-time visualization of noise sources, linked with the orientation of the smart phone, offers powerful help to noise control 5. CONCLUSIONS WHAT MAKE SUCCESSFUL SOUND APPS WORK There remains a place for sound measurement apps, mainly aimed at the consumer and for short, indicative measurements. However, it is the authors opinion that the most successful sound apps will be those that utilize and play a part in solutions where accurate measurement data is collected by 3125

dedicated, documented sensors linked to the cloud where data is processed and combined. Successful apps will be dedicated and simple, focusing on simple tasks and will provide immediacy and convenience to users where this is of value. These tasks include providing additional inputs and documentation to support prioritizing, setting up, making and reporting measurements. Successful apps will enhance field work and loosen the ties to an office and a PC by providing clear information to users whenever and wherever they are. REFERENCES 1.
