14 Spain: Distracted Driving is not just about cars Derailment of a high speed train due to excessive speed on 24 th July people died, more than 140 travellers were injured Cause: Excessive speed Due to the distraction of a colleague's call the driver ignored three audible warnings that should cause him to brake. Lessons learnt from this tragic event: The Spanish railway company Renfe redesigned the rules on communication between train drivers, operations control center and the staff traveling on board the train and on the other service calls Improvement of technical safety standards 14
