Cellular Communications n y Summary Q&A AGENDA Tony Whaley, RCDD/NTS/WD/CWP, CTS RTKL Associates, Baltimore, Maryland
Cellular Communications Update 4G 4G is short for fourth-generation. The Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF) defines 4G as a network that operates on Internet technology, combines it with other applications and technologies such as WI-FI and WiMax and runs at speeds ranging from 100 Mbps (in cell-phone networks) to 1 Gbps (in local WI-FI networks). 4G is not just one defined technology or standard, but rather a collection of technologies and protocols to enable the highest throughput, lowest cost wireless network possible.
Cellular Communications Update Cont. 4G The 4G Technology infrastructure and the terminals will have almost all the standards from 2G to 3G implemented. The system will also serve as an open platform where the new innovations can go with it. Some of the standards which pave the way for 4G systems are WiMax, WiBro, and the proposed 3GPP work-in-progress technologies such as HSOPA.
Cellular Communications Update Cont. 4G Cont. Who s Doing What: AT&T: The nation s largest network in terms of subscribers, AT&T plans to use LTE to upgrade to 4G, but not for a long time. When it does upgrade, it will be to HSPA+ in 2009 and Eventually it will go to LTE, but won t begin testing until 2010 or 2011 with full deployment coming after that. Verizon Wireless: Verizon is already testing LTE equipment from several vendors, with plans to roll out the network in 2010 and have most of the country covered by 2012; Verizon s would likely be the first full U.S. deployment of the LTE technology. Sprint-Nextel: The outlier in the whole transition to 4G, Sprint is going with WiMax rather than LTE. After a number of delays, the company is set to launch its network in September. The WiMax service is expected to kick off in Baltimore i with Chicago and Washington, D.C., to follow before the end of the year. T-Mobile: T-Mobile is still launching its 3G coverage, so its 4G networks may take a while to come to fruition.
Comparison of 3G and 4G Technologies
Cellular Communications Update Cont. 3G & WiMax Femtocells. Femtocells are tiny, low-power cellular base stations, similar to WiFi access points. They can be either standalone devices, or integrated into home gateways, and can be made to support several wireless standards. Unlike WiFi, however, they operate in licensed frequencies. From an end-user perspective, deploying a femto at home provides benefits such as better coverage, lower battery consumption, and, possibly, higherspeed, lower-latency data connections. As with any emerging technology, there are, of course, some unresolved technical and commercial issues not least of which are: What exactly are Femtocells for? And what is the business case?
802.11n Wireless Technology Update n is an IEEE standard that allows devices such as laptop computers or cellular phones to join a Wireless LAN widely used in the home, office and some commercial establishments. Although the N standard is still in "draft" stage according to the IEEE, many hardware vendors already sell "pre-n" or "Draft-N" hardware, based on the most recent draft. These vendors anticipate the final version will not be significantly different from the draft, and in a bid to get the early mover advantage, are pushing ahead with the technology. The n standard is expected to be significantly faster than previous standards, such as b and g, with many experts proclaiming that this wireless technology will finally allow consumers to move beyond traditional 10/100 wired LAN
802.11n cont. Update n is a proposed amendment which improves upon the previous standards by adding multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and many other newer features. To date the standard is still not approved and it is not expected to be finalized until December There are already many products on the market based on Draft 2.0 of this proposed standard amendment.
802.11y Wireless Technology Update IEEE y was approved for publication by the IEEE on September 26th, y is a amendment to the IEEE standard that will allow for Wi-Fi like equipment to operate on a secondary basis in licensed frequency bands. Applications for the technology include: Back haul for Municipal Wi-Fi networks Industrial automation and controls Campus and enterprise networking Last Mile Wireless Broadband Access Fixed Point to point links Fixed point to mobile links Public safety and security networks
