Chapter 2: Android Device Basics 1 Chapter 2: Android Device Basics Android devices have a ton of cool features and are really fun to play with, but they have a very practical side as well. We ll touch on some of the cool features, but our focus in this book will be more on the practical side. I know, you d rather have fun, but just because something is practical doesn t mean it can t be fun, too. At the present time, there are a variety of Android phones and tablets available. Unfortunately, because of the variety of devices available, the number of manufacturers, and the number of cell phone companies that sell Android devices, it is not possible to write a book that represents all possible configurations of the Android User Interface (UI). In addition to each manufacturer s unique UI, there are many versions of the Android operating system still in use. This book will attempt to present those features that are included on most devices. However, it is important to note that the images presented in this book may not look exactly like the images on your device. I will do my best to provide several icon images when appropriate and possible. Table 2-1 provides basic information about the various Android operating systems currently availalble. Table 2-1 Android OS Versions & Dates Android OS Version Release Name Release Date V2.0/2.1 Eclair October 2009 V2.2 Froyo May 2010 V2.3 Gingerbread December 2010 V3.x Honeycomb February 2011 (tablet only) V4.x Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) Throughout early 2012 V5.x Jellybean End of 2012 To Determine Your Android OS (Operating System) Version Tap the Launcher icon in the center bottom part of the Home screen. [NOTE: If you don t see a Launcher icon, your device may be locked. In this case, see the section of this chapter entitled The Lock Screen. ] Scroll (up or down) or flick (right or left) to find the Settings icon ( or ). Scroll to and tap About. OR Scroll to and tap About, then scroll to and tap Software Information.

2 Organize Your Life Using Android Devices Scroll to Android Version. Once you see which version is installed on your phone, use Table 2-1 above to determine the version s release name (e.g., Froyo, Gingerbread, or Ice Cream Sandwich). It will be helpful to you to know both the version number and the release name. To Access Settings Screen Using Shortcuts on v2.x Tap the Home button. Tap the Menu button to open Options menu. Tap Settings. IMPORTANT: Throughout this book, v2.x will be used to refer to any of the Android operating systems starting with v2, i.e., v2.1, v2.2, v2.3, or v2.4. ICS will be used to denote Ice Cream Sandwich, v4.x. Getting to Know Android Buttons Let s start with a general orientation to the various buttons that may appear on your Android device. Buttons do vary from device to device; however, your device should have some combination of the following buttons. There are several physical (external) controls common across devices: 1. Power button As with many devices, Android devices can be placed in sleep mode or turned off completely. Sleep mode allows the device to wake up quickly when the Sleep/Wake button is pressed, whereas turning the device off requires a short turn on time when you turn it back on. Some devices will also wake up when the Home button is pressed. a. Sleep/Wake Briefly pressing the Power button wakes the device up or puts it to sleep. b. On/Off Pressing and holding the Power button turns the phone on if it has been turned off or opens the Phone Options pop-up, from which the phone can be powered off.

Chapter 2: Android Device Basics 3 To Turn the Device Off Press and hold the Power button until the Phone Options pop-up appears. Tap the Power Off option to turn the power off. To Turn the Device On Press and hold the Power button until a logo (usually the phone manufacturer s logo) appears on the screen. 2. Volume Buttons (typically located on the side of the device) The Volume buttons are used to control the volume of the device. To Adjust Volume Press the top part of the volume control to increase the volume. Press the bottom part of the volume control to decrease the volume. 3. Headphones Port (typically located at the top or on the side of the device) The Headphones Port is used to attach headphones. 4. Back Button or (typically located on the face of the device at the bottom left) The Back button is used to move back one screen. 5. Home Button or (typically located on the face of the device at the bottom center) The Home button is used to return to the Home screen from an open application. 6. Recent Apps (typically located on the face of the device at the bottom right) The Recent Apps button is used to multitask among recently used apps, i.e., to see what apps have been used recently and jump to one, if desired. 7. Menu Button or (typically located on the face of the device at the bottom center) The Menu button is used to access the options menus and context menus.

4 Organize Your Life Using Android Devices 8. Search Button (typically located on the face of the device at the bottom right) The Search button is used to perform an Internet search or a search for information located on the device. To Adjust Ring/Silent Tap and hold on the down Volume button to silence phone and/or put phone into vibrate mode. Making Cognitive Connections 2-1 Attention to detail Visual orientation Visual memory Similarities & differences The first Making Cognitive Connections (MCC) exercise focuses on getting oriented to the external controls of your Android device. The process of orienting yourself involves paying close attention to details, including the objects location, size, shape, etc. Focusing on visual details will help provide an effective visual memory compensation technique. In addition, it will help in comparing and contrasting objects. This strategy can be used in different settings to help with orientation, memory, and identifying similarities and differences among various items. MCC & Android Devices Orient yourself to the external controls of the Android device you are using. Remember your device may or may not have all the external controls listed below. Identify the location, size, shape, etc. of the various controls: 1. Home Button

Chapter 2: Android Device Basics 5 2. Headphones Port 3. Volume buttons 4. Power button 5. Menu button 6. Back button 7. Recent Apps button

6 Organize Your Life Using Android Devices 8. Search button School & Work Choose an electronic device you are familiar with (e.g., smartphone, cellphone, ipod, computer, DVR, etc.) and identify several of the visual details of the device. Identify the device: Describe several details about the device identified above: Identify any similarities and differences between your Android device and the device you identified above. Similarities:

Chapter 2: Android Device Basics 7 Differences: The Lock Screen When you first turn on your device, the Lock screen will appear (see Figure 2-1). Your Lock screen may have a different appearance based on your device and version of the Android OS. For instance, your Lock screen may have a pattern for you to slide your finger over to unlock the device, or it may have a picture of a lock that you slide from one side of the screen to the other. Or, it could have a ring at the bottom of the screen (as shown below) that can be dragged to a different location on the screen to unlock. Notice the two points of reference that will help you to identify the Lock screen: The screen will not change when it is tapped when the Lock screen is active. The lock or the ring reference is only found on the Lock screen. Figure 2-1: Lock Screen

8 Organize Your Life Using Android Devices The Lock screen appears in a couple of situations: When the Android device is first turned on When the Sleep/Wake button is pressed to wake up the device To Unlock the Device Touch and slide the lock to the right. OR Tap and drag the ring to another location on the screen. If you are concerned that your device is too easy to unlock and use (e.g., if you lose your phone), a more secure Lock screen can be created. The modified Lock screen can appear as a: Pattern PIN (number code) Password To Change the Default Lock Screen Tap the Launcher icon in the center bottom part of the Home screen. Flick (right or left) OR Scroll (up or down) to find the Settings icon ( or ). Scroll to and tap Security OR Location & Security. Tap Screen Lock OR Set Up Screen Lock. Choose the desired Lock screen (e.g., None, Pattern, PIN, Password). Follow the onscreen directions to set your new Lock screen. NOTE: Setting a secure Lock Screen will protect your phone from others, but it can also cause problems for you. Be sure to set a pattern, PIN, or password that is meaningful and easy for you to remember; you don t want to lock yourself out of your device!

Chapter 2: Android Device Basics 9 GIVE IT A TRY! Turn your device on (Power button). Unlock the device (touch and slide lock, ring, etc.). Turn the device off (press and hold Power button). Turn the device on again (press and hold Power button). NOTE: It is not necessary to turn the device off every moment you are not using it. In fact, alarms and reminders will not sound when the device has been turned off. The Home Screen The Home screen is the screen that appears after the device is unlocked. It provides icons for a number of built-in applications (apps) we will explore in this book. Figure 2-2 shows a sample Home screen for Android phones (note the Phone icon in the lower left corner of the screen). Figure 2-2: Sample Android Phone Home Screen If you are the least bit curious (like me), you might start tapping app icons on the Home screen before you really know what they do. Any time you get yourself lost and need to get back to the Home screen, press the Home button (typically located at the bottom center of the device itself, not the screen).

10 Organize Your Life Using Android Devices GIVE IT A TRY! Tap the People or Contacts app icon. Press the Home button to return to the Home screen. Now that you have a big picture reference for the Home screen and you know how to get back to the Home screen at any time, let s divide the screen into sections and explore their various functions. The Status Bar The top part of the screen is called the Status Bar (see Figure 2-3). Among other things, the status bar will typically display the wireless carrier and strength of the wireless signal. Figure 2-3 shows a very weak (one bar) signal strength. Figure 2-3: Android Device Status Bar Example It is important to note that the icons on your status bar may not match those in the figure above. The icons vary, based on active device functions. Your status bar will likely include some combination of the icons shown in Table 2-2: Table 2-2 Icons Commonly Found on Status Bar of Android Devices Status Bar Icon Status Bar Icon Description Wi-Fi Indicates that Wi-Fi is on and connected. The stronger the connection, the more bars. Time Shows the current time. Alarm Indicates an alarm is set. Vibrate Mode Indicates the phone is in vibrate mode.

Chapter 2: Android Device Basics 11 Status Bar Icon Status Bar Icon Description Battery Indicates the battery strength. Bluetooth Indicates that Bluetooth is turned on. Download Progress Indicates a download is in progress. Additional status bar icons may be present with their corresponding functions (e.g., phone, messages, etc.). GIVE IT A TRY! Locate the status bar on your device. Referring to the table above, locate and identify the status bar icons on your device. The Application Area The appearance of your Home screen is based on your phone s manufacturer and/or your cell phone company, as well as the number and types of apps installed on the device. Figure 2-3 shows the Home screen for my Android HTC Virgin Mobile phone.

12 Organize Your Life Using Android Devices Figure 2-3: Home Screen Example Notice that there are two sections to the application area: 1. General Application Icons (upper 90% of screen, just below the status bar) 2. Launch Bar (lowest icon row on screen) Each of these sections will be explored below. General Application Icons The default general apps available on the Home screen will vary from device to device. In most cases, at least the apps shown and described in Table 2-3 will appear on the main Home screen. Table 2-3 General Applications: Icons and Descriptions App Icon People or Contacts App Description Create contacts, including names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. Contacts can be synchronized with various digital address books. (People is also called Contacts on some Android OS versions.)

Chapter 2: Android Device Basics 13 App Icon App Description Internet Browse the Internet. Playstore or Marketplace Purchase, download, and install apps on your device. (Playstore is also called Marketplace on some Android OS versions.) Google Search Field Before we move on to the Launch Bar section of the screen, let s explore the Google search field (see Figure 2-8). The search field may appear on any of the Home page screens. We ll discuss how to move the search field from one Home page to another in the next chapter. The typical default setting for the Google search field is to search the Internet for the word or phrases entered. Figure 2-8: Google Search Field To Perform a Search Tap the Google search field. Enter the desired keyword or phrase using the keyboard. Tap the desired search result to open that reference in Google Search or in the associated app.

14 Organize Your Life Using Android Devices To Perform a Voice Search Tap the microphone to the left of the Google search field. Say aloud the desired keyword or phrase. Tap the desired search result to open that reference in Google Search. The default searchable items can be modified to include any of the following (and more): Apps Calendar Dropbox Mail Messages Music People To Expand the List of Searchable Items (ICS) Tap the Google search field. Tap the More icon to the right of the search field. Tap Settings. Tap Searchable Items. Tap the circle to the right of the items you would like the search to include. [NOTE: A green check mark will appear in the circle indicating that item will be included in searches.] To Expand the List of Searchable Items (v2.x) Tap the Google search field. Tap the Google icon to the left of the search field. Tap Settings icon in the upper right corner. Tap the square to the right of the items you would like the search to include. [NOTE: A green check mark will appear in the square indicating that item will be included in searches.]

Chapter 2: Android Device Basics 15 Figure 2-9 shows a typical search result for a search on ID 4 the Web. As you type, the search results will start off broad and then narrow as you enter additional letters. For example, Figure 2-10 shows the search results after I entered the first two letters of my first name ( Mi ). As you can see, the initial search results are broad and include: My own contact reference ( Michelle Ranae Wild ) A Calendar event ( Dinner with Mike ) Figure 2-9: Search Results Screen 1 Figure 2-10: Search Results Screen 2 The Launch Bar The Launch Bar is composed of four application icons plus the All Apps (Launcher) icon (the one in the center). The Launch Bar is located at the bottom of the Home screen and remains there, even when moving from one Home page to another. Figure 2-11 shows an example of the Launch Bar. Note that the apps that appear in the Launch Bar may vary from device to device and from one Android OS version to another. Figure 2-11: The Launch Bar

16 Organize Your Life Using Android Devices Launch Bar Icons Table 2-4 shows and describes the typical Launch Bar apps. Table 2-4 Launch Bar Icons App Icons App Description Phone Make and receive phone calls. Mail Send and receive via wireless service provider or Wi-Fi connection when available. Launcher Messages Open the All Apps (or Launcher) screen. All apps on the device should appear on this screen. Send and receive text messages (SMS) and multimedia messages (MMS). Camera Access and listen to music, podcasts, and audiobooks. The default apps in the Launch Bar can be moved and/or modified as described in the next chapter. Home Page Reference As mentioned above, the Launch Bar appears on all Home pages. A Home page reference or indicator appears when more than one Home page is available. Its appearance varies from one version of the Android OS to another. Figure 2-4 shows the reference on a phone with the Android 2.x OS. Note that the number of dots on each side of the screen indicates how many Home pages are available to that side of the current screen. Figure 2-4: Android 2.x Home Page Reference

Chapter 2: Android Device Basics 17 Figure 2-5 shows the Home page reference on the latest Android OS (v4.x, i.e., ICS). Figure 2-5: Android 4.0 Home Page Reference Located Above the Launch Bar The Home page reference is a bit less obvious on Android 4.x devices and it s not always visible. It appears just above the Launch Bar for a short period of time when flicking from one screen to another; otherwise, it does not appear onscreen. The image seen in Figure 2-5 indicates that I am on the Home page immediately to the right of the primary Home page. So why would you need or want more than one Home page? It is very easy to acquire so many apps that you get lost on your own device. Additional Home pages can be used to help organize or categorize apps. The Home page reference should help to orient you as to which of your Home pages you are currently viewing. NOTE: You cannot create new Home pages on the Android OS; the number of Home pages your device has is determined by the OS version installed on your device. Figures 2-6 and 2-7 below show two additional Home pages, each with different app icons. Note the Home page reference is over the envelope icon in Figure 2-6 and above the phone icon in Figure 2-7. Figure 2-6: Second of Five Home Pages Figure 2-7: First of Five Home Pages

18 Organize Your Life Using Android Devices You might be wondering why some of the icons on the screen in Figure 2-6 look like app icons and some look like they contain several tiny app icons. The Android OS allows you to create folders. Folders are a great way of organizing similar apps into one location. In Figure 2-6 above, I have a folder at the top left of my screen called Games. I have stored two of my favorite games (Cut the Rope and Where s My Water) in this folder so I can quickly find my favorite game apps. We ll talk more about folders and how to create them in the next chapter. GIVE IT A TRY! Flick through the various Home pages on your device. Launcher The Launcher icon opens the All Apps screen and shows all the apps installed on the device (see Figure 2-12). You can navigate the Launcher by flicking sideways from screen to screen (ICS) or by scrolling up or down (v2.x). Figure 2-12: Launcher Screen in ICS Note that several options appear at the top and the bottom of the screen on devices running ICS. Figure 2-13 shows the options available at the top of the All Apps screen: Search Opens a search field to quickly find a specific app Play Store Opens the Play Store where you can purchase new apps

All Displays all apps installed Frequent Displays the most frequently used apps Downloads Displays the apps that have been downloaded Figure 2-14: All Apps Screen Bottom in ICS Multitasking Efficient multitasking is a great feature in the Android OS. Although this feature has been around for some time, newer phones designed for ICS include a quick-to-access Recent Apps button on the device face, often next to the Home button. So how do you use the Recent Apps button to multitask? If you want to jump to an open app without having to search for it on one of your Home Screens or in a folder, you can find it quickly within the list of recent apps. The list opens in its own screen. Figure 2-15 shows an example of the Recent Apps screen in ICS.

Flick up or down to see the list of recent apps. Tap the recent app you would like to open. To Access Recent Apps Using Android OS v2.x Press and hold the Home button. Tap the recent app you would like to re-open. To Remove Apps from the Recent App Screen in ICS Tap the app to be removed and drag to the right.

Chapter 2: Android Device Basics 21 Making Cognitive Connections 2-2 Attention to detail Visual orientation Visual memory Similarities & differences Let s continue practicing your attention to detail, orientation, memory, and similarities & differences skills. School & Work Focus your attention on the software utilized by the electronic device you referred to in the previous MCC exercise (e.g., PDA, smartphone, cellphone, ipod, computer, etc.). Identify any similarities and differences between the types of apps available on your Android device versus the programs available on the device you identified above. Similarities: Differences:

22 Organize Your Life Using Android Devices Widgets Widgets provide a way to display partial information from an app on a Home screen. There are common widgets across phones; however, each manufactuer includes its own widgets. Widgets can be handy because they allow you to see some information without having to actually open the app. Figure 2-16 shows a Calendar widget added to one of the Home screens. Figure 2-16: Calendar Widget in ICS As you can see, it shows me my upcoming appointments right on the Home screen. Most widgets allow you to access the full app by tapping some part of the widget. In the Calendar widget shown above, tapping the right facing arrow at the top of the widget opens the full Calendar app. To Add a Widget Using ICS Tap and hold on the Home screen to bring up a list of widgets. Tap the desired widget to add to the Home screen (see Figure 2-17). Note that the All Widgets list shown in Figure 2-17 indicates that this is just the first of twelve pages of widgets available; note the 1/12 page reference shown near the bottom center of the screen. To see more widgets, tap the right arrow after the page reference to advance to the next page in the list.

Chapter 2: Android Device Basics 23 Figure 2-17: Add Widget Screen in ICS To Add a Widget Using Android OS v2.x Tap and hold on the Home screen. Tap Widgets. Tap the desired widget. Widgets can be moved by tapping, holding, and dragging the widget to the desired location. To Delete a Widget Tap and hold on the to-be-deleted widget. Tap Remove or drag it to the Trash can that appears. GIVE IT A TRY! Add two widgets of your choice to one of your Home screens. Delete one of the widgets.
