6 S PEN FEATURES The S Pen is a stylus that assists you in performing different functions. By using the Pen button, you can minimize having to switch between touch and pen input S PEN BUTTON 2. S PEN TIP 6

7 FIRST STEPS Inserting your 4G LTE SIM card Your SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is a small rectangular plastic card that stores your important information about your wireless service. To install your 4G LTE SIM card: 1. Open the cover to the SIM Card slot and carefully insert the 4G LTE SIM card with the gold contact facing down (1). 2. Push the SIM until it clicks into place (2). Caution!: Do not bend or scratch your 4G LTE SIM card. Avoid exposing your SIM card to static electricity, water or dirt. 7

8 Removing your 4G LTE SIM card Open the cover to the SIM card slot and carefully push the 4G LTE SIM card inward to release from the socket. NOTE: This device requires a SIM card. Please insert the SIM card included in the package prior to turning on the device. This SIM card will only work with this device. Once the SIM card has been inserted, do not remove! If your SIM card is ever separated from the device or damaged, your device will not function. If you experience any issues with your device, contact Customer Service at or dialing 611 on your U.S. Cellular handset or by visiting your a U.S. Cellular retail store. 8

9 SIM Card Limited Warranty Subject to the exclusions contained below, United States Cellular Corporation ( U.S. Cellular ) warrants to the original purchaser ( You or Your ) of the handset with which the SIM card was provided that the SIM card will be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the date You purchased the handset (the Warranty Period ). This warranty is not transferable. Should a defect appear during the Warranty Period, U.S. Cellular will send a replacement SIM card to Your address within the United States without charge provided that you request the replacement SIM card during or within thirty (30) days following the Warranty Period by calling U.S. Cellular Customer Service at or dialing 611 on your U.S. Cellular handset or by visiting your a U.S. Cellular retail store. 11 Charging your device 1. Carefully slide the Outlet Connector into the Charging Head. Make sure the connection is secure. 2. Connect the USB cable to the Charging Head. Outlet Connector Charging Head USB Cable 11

12 3. Insert the charger into the charger port at the bottom end of the tablet. 4. Plug the outlet connector into a compatible electrical outlet. WARNING: Please use only an approved charging accessory to charge your device. Improper handling of the charging port, as well as the use of an incompatible charger, may cause damage to your device and void the warranty. 12

13 TURNING ON OR OFF To power on your device Press and hold the Power/Lock top of your tablet. To power off your device on the 1. Press and hold the Power/Lock until the Tablet options screen appears. 2. Tap (Power off) g OK. Restarting your device 1. Press and hold the (Power/Lock) until the Device options screen appears. 2. Tap (Restart). 13

14 SETTING UP When you turn on your wireless device for the first time, you have the option to quickly set up various accounts, such as Google, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, other accounts, and sign in to social networking sites. Simply follow the onscreen instructions to complete the initial setup of your wireless device. 1. Press and hold Power/Lock to turn it on. 2. Select a language and touch Start. 3. If applicable setup your Wifi connection and touch Next. If not touch Skip. 4. Tap Create new account to create a new Samsung acccount or Sign in to sign in to an existing Samsung account. Tap Skip to skip this step. 5. Touch Yes if you have a Gmail account and sign in, or tap No to create an account. 6. Tap Get an account to create a new account, or tap Not now. 14

15 If you have an existing Google Account, your contacts from that account are then synced to your device. Add additional accounts by doing the following: From the Home screen, touch Apps ( ) g Settings ( ) g Add account g select an type and follow the prompts. 7. Turn off Google location services (if desired) and touch. 8. Enter your first and last name and tap. 9. Tap Create a new Dropbox account to get a free 50 GB account for two years, or tap I already have an account, and sign in. Or tap No thanks to skip. 10. The device is setup. Tap Finish to exit the setup wizard. Setting up an account To add additional accounts, touch Apps ( ) g Settings ( ) g Add account. Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync is for adding a work account. Google is for adding another Gmail account. 15

16 Setting up a corporate account 1. To add additional accounts, touch Apps ( ) g ( ). 2. Enter your corporate address and password and touch Next. 3. Select Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. 4. Enter the correct Domain, Password and Exchange server information, then touch Next. 5. Touch OK to activate an application that stores your device identifier and model name. Or, touch Cancel to cancel setup. NOTE: If your exchange server requires this feature be active, leaving it unchecked can prevent connection. 6. Read the onscreen activation disclaimer and touch OK. 7. Adjust the various onscreen configuration fields and touch Next. 8. Identify your account with a unique name and provide the outgoing name text and then touch Next. 16

17 LOCKING AND UNLOCKING By default, the device screen locks when the backlight turns off. To unlock your device from the lock screen: XX With your device turned on, press (Power/Lock) to wake the display and slide your finger across the screen in any direction. To lock your device screen: XX Press black. (Power/Lock). The screen goes 17

19 Home screen icons Back: Touch to return to the previous screen or option. Home: Touch to return to the Home screen. Recent Apps: Touch to open a list of thumbnail images of apps recently used. Touch a thumbnail to open. Screen capture: Touch to capture a picture of the current screen and saves it in the /Root/ScreenCapture folder. Mini App tray: Touch to display shortcuts to apps that you might need while working in other apps. For more information, see page mini app tray on page 29. Google Search: Touch to search the web or your device. Apps: Touch to display the Apps panel. 19

20 Notification ringtones Your device comes with a selection of notification ringtones. Here s how to manage your preferences: Selecting a ringtone 1. From the Home screen touch Apps ( ) g Settings ( ) g Sound g Default notifications. 2. Touch a ringtone to hear a sample and to select it. 3. Touch OK to save setting. Setting ringtone to vibrate To activate Vibrate, press the Volume key (on the top of your tablet) left, until you feel the tablet vibrate. To resume normal ringing, press the Volume key right. 20

21 Customizing the home screen Changing wallpaper Wallpapers consist of either Gallery images (user taken), Live wallpapers (animated backgrounds), or Wallpaper gallery (default phone wallpapers). 1. From the current screen, touch and hold an empty area. 2. Touch Set wallpaper to set wallpaper for the Home screen, Lock screen or Home and lock screens. Tap Gallery to select from a user image stored in the camera image Gallery. Crop the image, and tap Done. Tap Live wallpapers to select from a list of animated backgrounds, once done tap Set wallpaper. Tap Wallpapers, scroll through the images, tap a wallpaper image, then tap Set wallpaper. 21

22 Adding widgets Widgets are self-contained applications that you can place on any screen to access your favorite features. 1. From a Home screen, touch and hold an empty area of the screen. Tap Apps and widgets tab highlights. 2. Touch a widget to add it to a Home screen or touch and hold the widget and drag it onto a desired Home screen. NOTE: This same process can be used to add Widgets to other screens where screen space is available. 22

23 Adding application shortcuts Use App shortcuts for quick access to applications or features, such as or other applications. Unlike Widgets, these are just shortcuts to onboard applications. Adding shortcuts to the screen 1. Navigate to the screen on which you want to place the shortcut. 2. Touch Apps ( ). or 3. Touch and hold on the screen until the Home screen options pop-up displays. 4. Touch Apps and widgets. 5. Touch the Apps tab. 6. Touch and hold the application icon, then slide the icon where you want it placed and lift your finger off the icon. 7. Touch and hold the App Shortcut and drag the application icon to reposition it on the Home screen. 23

24 Adding app shortcuts from the apps screen 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ( ) in the upper right corner of the display. 2. Touch and hold on an application icon, then 3. Drag the application icon to the desired Home screen. 4. Drag the application icon to reposition it on the Home screen. 24

25 Notifications Notification icons display in the System Bar, to the left of the Time when you receive a notification. Notifications indicate the arrival of Gmail, , alarms, calendar events, and more. Tap a Notification icon for more details. For example, tap the available Wi-Fi network icon to see available wireless connections. Notifications icons Time Tap the Time field to open the Notifications list to view all of your current notifications. Tap a Notification in the list to display the item. For example, tap a Gmail entry to open the Gmail application and view the message. Most apps that send notifications, such as Gmail and Google Talk, have their own settings, which you can use to configure whether and how they send notifications, whether they sound a ringtone, and more. See the documentation for specific application details. 25

26 Status Details To display the current date and time, battery status, and Wi-Fi connectivity status, open Status Details. 1. 27 The Quick Settings are: Wi-Fi: Touch to enable or disable Wi-Fi. GPS: Touch to enable or disable the device s GPS functions. Sound/Mute: Touch to enable or disable Standalone GPS services. Screen rotation: When On the screen rotates automatically from landscape to portrait and vice versa. When Off the screen is fixed in the current mode, either portrait or landscape. Bluetooth : Touch to enable or disable Bluetooth function. Mobile data: Touch to enable or disable Mobile data. Blocking mode: Notifications are received only from people on your allowed list. Power saving: Uses default settings to conserve power on your device. AllShare Cast: Allows you to interact and draw with an on-screen image while select users instantly see the gesture and are able to interact. Sync: Synchronizes your device with the network. Synchronizes contacts, , time, and a variety of accounts. 27

28 Brightness slider: Touch and drag the slider to set the brightness or tap Auto to allow the device to set brightness automatically based on available light and battery charge status. Settings: Touch to open the Settings menu. Tap an Alert entry to display the details or tap Clear to remove all notifications. 2. Tap the X in the upper right corner of the Quick Settings pop-up or any other part of the screen to close Quick Settings. 28

29 Mini app tray There are shortcuts available that link to apps you might need while working in other apps, such as your calendar, a memo pad, and a calculator. In some cases, these shortcuts are actually links to the part of the app you need most and they contain a link to the actual app where you can use other functions. Open Mini App tray Close Mini App tray 1. From any screen, tap in the middle of the System Bar to open the Mini App tray. 2. Tap any of the following icons to display the associated application. 3. Touch on the left side of the System Bar to close the Mini App tray. 29

30 Search Google Search Search the internet, and your device, using the Google search engine. 1. From a Home screen, touch in the upper left corner. 2. Use the keypad to enter search criteria. Suggestions display below the text entry area. or Tap and speak your search criteria slowly and clearly. Google searches for the information and displays results. 3. Touch a suggestion to search for that term. or Touch to start the search. A browser window displays the search results. 30

31 Removing icons from the home screen Touch and hold the icon until Remove displays at the top right corner of the screen, then drag the icon to the APPS Recent apps Remove to remove it. Touch to open thumbnail images of apps you have worked with recently. Touch a thumbnail to open. Touch Task manager to close. Apps menu 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ( ) in the right corner of the display, to view your apps screen. 2. Touch the Apps tab to view application downloads from Google Play Store. 3. Touch Play Store to purchase or download free applications from Play Store. 31

33 CREATING A NEW GOOGLE ACCOUNT It is recommended that you create a Google account when you first use your device in order to fully utilize available functionality. This account provides access to several device features such as Gmail, Google Maps, Navigation, Google Talk, and Google Play Store applications. Before you can access Google applications, you must enter your account information. These applications sync between your device and your online Google account. To create a new Google account from your device: 1. From the Home screen, tap (Apps) g (Play Store). 2. Read the introduction and tap New to begin. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to create a Google Account. or Tap (Apps) g (Gmail) if this is not the first time you are starting the device. DEVICE FUNCTIONS 33

34 To create a new Google account from the Web: 1. From a computer, launch a Web browser and navigate to 2. Click Create an account for free. 3. Follow the on-screen prompts to create your free account. 4. Look for an from Google in the box you provided, and respond to the to confirm and activate your new account. SIGNING INTO YOUR GOOGLE ACCOUNT DEVICE FUNCTIONS 1. Launch an application that requires a Google account (such as Play Store or Gmail). 2. Tap Existing. 3. 35 CONTACTS Creating a new contact 1. From the Home screen, tap (Contacts) g (Create Contacts). 2. Enter the desired information into the appropriate fields. 3. Tap Save to store the new entry. Editing an existing contact 1. From the Home screen, tap (Contacts). 2. Touch an entry and touch (Edit). 3. Edit the desired information. Tap on the on-screen keypad to remove text. Touch Add another field to add additional fields. 4. Tap Save to update and store your entry. Deleting a contact 1. From the Home screen, tap (Contacts). 2. Movies are available the day after DVD release and TV shows the day after premiering. NOTE: Media Hub service requires a Media Hub account, and depends on service availability. 37 BLUETOOTH Bluetooth is a short-range communications technology that allows you to connect wirelessly to a number of Bluetooth devices, such as headsets and hands-free car kits, and Bluetooth-enabled handhelds, computers, printers, and wireless devices. Turn Bluetooth On and Off To turn Bluetooth on: 1. From the Home screen, tap (Apps) g Settings. 2. In a single motion touch and slide the Bluetooth slider to the right ON to turn it on. 38 To turn Bluetooth off: DEVICE FUNCTIONS 1. From the Home screen, tap (Apps) g Settings. 2. In a single motion touch and slide the Bluetooth slider to the left OFF to turn it off. Pairing Bluetooth devices 1. Verify Bluetooth is active. 2. From the Bluetooth settings page, tap the Visibility field (shown by the device name). Your device must be visible to successfully pair with an external device. A green check mark indicates activity. 3. Tap Scan. Your device displays a list of discovered in-range Bluetooth devices. 4. Tap a device from the list to initiate pairing. 38

39 5. Enter the passkey or PIN code, if needed, and tap OK. The external device must accept the connection and enter your device s PIN code. or If the device allows automatic or smart pairing, your device attempts to pair with the device automatically. 40 Wi-Fi Wi-Fi (short for wireless fidelity ) is a term used for certain types of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN). Wi-Fi communication requires access to an existing and accessible Wireless Access Point (WAP). These WAPs can either be Open (unsecured) as within most Hot Spots, or Secured (requiring knowledge of the Router name and password). Turning Wi-Fi On or Off By default, your device s Wi-Fi feature is turned on. Wi-Fi allows your device to discover and connect to compatible in-range WAPs (Wireless Access Points). DEVICE FUNCTIONS 1. From any screen, touch the Time in the Status Bar. The Status Details display. Your tablet automatically scans for available Wi-Fi networks. 2. Touch Wi-Fi to activate or deactive it. 40

41 Connecting to a Wi-Fi network 1. From any screen, touch the Time in the Status Bar. The Status Details display. 2. Touch Wi-Fi to turn Wi-Fi On. Your device automatically scans for available Wireless Access Points. 3. When the scan is complete, touch a Wi-Fi network to connect. If the Wi-Fi network is open, your device automatically connects. If the Wi-Fi network is secured, enter the password at the prompt to connect. DEVICE FUNCTIONS 41

42 WEB BROWSING Take the Internet with you wherever you go. You can read the latest news, get the weather and follow your stocks. Launching the browser From the Home screen, touch Internet ( ). NOTE: You should be signed in to your Google account to sign in to Google sites. Entering a URL DEVICE FUNCTIONS 1. From the Home screen, touch Internet ( ). 2. Touch the URL field at the top of the screen, then enter the URL using the virtual QWERTY keyboard. 3. As you enter characters, potential matches display. Continue entering characters, or touch a match to complete the URL, then touch Go to load the page. 42

43 Accessing the browser menu 1. From the Home screen, touch Browser ( ). 2. While viewing a Web page, touch Menu ( ) to access its available options. CAMERA AND HIGH-DEFINITION VIDEO Taking pictures 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ( ) g Camera ( ) to launch the camera. 2. Aim the camera lens at the desired object and touch to capture the image. Front facing camera and camcorder In camera mode, touch to switch to the front facing camera for video chat or self portraits. In camcorder mode, touch to switch to the front facing camcorder to record a video of yourself. DEVICE FUNCTIONS 43

44 Recording a video 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ( ) g Camera ( )g move the slider to Camcorder. 2. Aim the camcorder lens at the desired object and touch to record video. Touch to stop and automatically save recording. Viewing a picture or video 1. From the Home screen, touch Gallery ( ) and touch an Album to display items. 2. 45 VIDEO CHAT Use Google Talk to chat with other Google Talk users. Launching Google Talk 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ( ) g Talk ( ). NOTE: Talk requires that you have a Google account set prior to using this service. 2. Enter your account information and touch Sign in. The screen then displays your current information, user information, and acceptance status for both video and voice chats. The left of the screen indicates the status of your current friends. 46 Initiating a video chat 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ( ) g Talk ( ). NOTE: Talk requires that you have a Google account set prior to using this service. 2. Touch Add friend. 3. Enter your friend s address and touch DONE. 4. The recipient must touch Accept on their device to complete the connection.the screen displays two screens, the larger screen area is your recipient and the smaller screen area is a preview of your camera image. Initiating a voice chat DEVICE FUNCTIONS 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ( ) g Talk ( ). 2. Touch the entry for your target friend. 3. Touch Voice Chat ( ) to initiate the voice chat session. 46

47 E-READING Use the Play Books app to read ebooks from the web-based Google Books service. Play Books is a new way to discover, buy, and enjoy your favorite books online and offline. You can read books online or mark them for availability offline, so you can read them when you have no Internet connection (such as on an airplane). You can also use Play Books as your starting point for browsing or searching for books online. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ( ) g Play Books ( ). 2. Follow the prompts to start reading. 3. Once the book displays, sweep across the screen to turn the page or touch for a table of contents. Touch to set Show, Brightness, Text settings, and Line height. DEVICE FUNCTIONS 47

48 DEVICE FUNCTIONS 4. Touch Menu ( ) for these options: Make available offline: Mark books to make them available offline. Touch below a book cover to mark it with a pin and then touch Done. Just reverse this process to remove books from your device. Accounts: Set the account to use. Refresh: If a book in your library does not appear on your device, use this option to update the display. Help: Displays various Book help information. Touch Help Center to get additional Google Book information. 5. To add more books to your library, touch Shop in the Application bar. A pop-up displays the Google Play Store Terms of Service and the Play Books Terms of Service. Read each document and touch Accept. Browse the selection of Google ebooks, which are arranged in categories like Trending, Top Rated, Best Selling, and many more. 6. To find a book by title or author name, touch Search ( ) on the Books main screen or touch Shop g Search ( ). 48

49 GETTING STARTED WITH LOCATION BASED SERVICES (LBS) To use Location Based Services, you must first enable location services on your device: 1.
