4. APP SETUP After the installation of the wvms module in your vehicle, some initial set up items need to occur before using the smart phone app. When the module arrives, it is configured to allow any supported smart phone with the dcconnect app to connect to it. The first smart phone connected will be given Administrative privileges, or rights, to the module. Administrative privileges give the user access to the following functionality (see the Alerts & Settings Screen section of the User s Manual for additional information regarding each function): Setting/Changing the Password for Admin Retrieval Viewing/Changing the Device Name Viewing/Changing the Battery Floor Percentage Viewing/Changing Charger s Max Current Rating Viewing/Changing the Rated Pack Voltage Viewing/Changing the Rated Pack Amp Hours Clearing the White List Accepting All Devices on the Next Connect Giving the Next Connect Admin Privileges Clearing the Module Battery History Begin by following these steps to make the initial connection to the module: 1. Turn on the smart phone. 2. For Android smart phones, the app performs best if Bluetooth is enabled prior to making the app active. Bluetooth functionality is enabled in the smart phone s settings menu. 3. Open the app. 4. After the CHOOSE VEHICLE box automatically opens, select the correct module from the list. If the module does not appear in the list, tap the RESCAN button. If the app is not showing the functionality below associated with having Administrative privileges within the Alerts & Settings screen, you will not be able to finish the initial set up process and should refer to the Troubleshooting section of the User s Manual. The following items should be set/verified on the Alerts & Settings screen (see the Alerts & Settings Screen section of the User s Manual for specific instructions). 1. Set/Verify the Charger s Max Current Rating 2. Set/Verify the Rated Pack Voltage 3. Set/Verify the Rated Pack Amp Hours After setting, or verifying, the Rated Pack Voltage and Rated Pack Amp Hours, the module must be rebooted. This is done by removing the 6-pin connector on the module labeled "Vehicle Port" from its receptacle, waiting a moment, and then plugging the connector back in. Please see the Module Features section of the User s Manual for help identifying the Vehicle Port. For the best user experience, it is recommended to fully charge the vehicle batteries, allowing the charger to run to completion, after a module reboot. The first charge after a reboot enables the module to more accurately determine the State of Charge (SOC) of the battery pack. The user is highly encouraged to set the Password for Admin Retrieval. This is accomplished on the Alerts & Settings screen within the app. This password will be saved on the module to provide a method to connect a new smart phone to the module using the Connect Via Password screen and this password if no smart phones with Administrative privileges are available to grant this access in the standard way using the Alerts & Settings screen. NOTE: A default password is not provided. dcconnect wvms 10 of 23 User s Manual
The user may also wish to change the Device Name. This is accomplished on the Alerts & Settings screen within the app. Please note that it may be necessary to reboot the smart phone running the app in order for the new device name to be utilized. Please see the Rebooting the Smart Phone section of the User s Manual if instructions are needed to do so. If an optional vehicle lockout hardware kit was purchased, a 9-digit PIN was supplied with the kit that will be required to activate the vehicle lock functionality on the Register Vehicle Lock screen within the app. If the initial set up was not performed with the end user s smart phone, please see the Give Next Connect Admin Privileges section of the User s Manual for instruction regarding giving the end user s smart phone Administrative privileges. 5. DASHBOARD SCREEN This screen displays the state of charge (SOC) both numerically and graphically with a battery fuel gauge that changes colors based on the SOC, from green to yellow to red. The slash that is part of the app header mirrors the battery fuel gauge color throughout the app. The Dashboard screen also displays the active status of the system: discharging (DISCHARGING), regen (REGEN), charging (CHARGING), Bluetooth scanning (SCANNING), or Bluetooth connecting (CONNECTING). When the status is charging, the approximate number of minutes remaining until the charge cycle is complete is also displayed. The Battery Status section of the screen displays the current in amps being discharged from the battery pack or returned to the battery pack via regen or charging; the total amp-hours (AH), or charge, removed from or returned to the battery pack during the active discharge or charge session; and the voltage of the battery pack in volts. Finally, if the optional vehicle lock feature has been activated via the Register Vehicle Lock screen, lock and unlock buttons as well as a vehicle lock status indicator will be available on the Dashboard screen. The vehicle can only be locked if the discharge current draw has been below a predetermined level for a preset amount of time, which indicates that that vehicle is stopped and not in use. Figure 5-1: dcconnect App Dashboard Screen dcconnect wvms 11 of 23 User s Manual
6. DIAGNOSTICS SCREEN This screen provides real-time data, including voltage (VOLTS), current (AMPS), State of Charge (SOC), temperature (F/C TEMP), amp-hours discharged/charged (AH DISCHARGED/CHARGED), and approximate charge time remaining in minutes (MIN REMAIN TO CHARGE). Because the data is in real time, it is ideal for diagnostic and troubleshooting purposes. 7. HISTORY SCREEN Figure 6-1: dcconnect Diagnostics Screen When this screen is accessed, all new discharge and charge cycle History records are downloaded from the connected module into the app. The app then displays a complete listing of all History records that have ever been downloaded for the connected module. Figure 7-1: dcconnect App History Screen dcconnect wvms 12 of 23 User s Manual
Discharge cycle History records include the following data: Final State of Charge (SOC) o The battery pack SOC at the end of the discharge cycle before the next charge cycle was initiated when the vehicle s battery charger was started. The Final SOC is a percentage between 100%, which represents a fully charged battery pack, and 0%, which represents a fully discharged battery pack. Final voltage o The battery pack voltage at the end of the discharge cycle before the next charge cycle was initiated when the vehicle s battery charger was started. The final voltage is affected by a number of factors, such as the amount of the time that the vehicle was idle before being charged and temperature, but, in general, it is lower for lower Final SOC levels and higher for higher Final SOC levels. For 48-volt battery packs at room temperature, the typical Final Voltage range is 44 to 52 volts. For 36-volt battery packs at room temperature, the typical Final Voltage range is 32 to 40 volts. For 24-volt battery packs at room temperature, the typical Final Voltage range is 20 to 28 volts. Regen amp-hours o The amp-hours, or charge, returned to the battery pack by the regenerative braking system while the vehicle was in use. Amp-hours discharged o The amp-hours, or charge, removed from the battery pack. Discharge time in minutes o The time in minutes that the vehicle was in a discharge state. This includes time when the vehicle was idle. State of Health (SOH) o The remaining usable capacity when the battery pack is fully charged expressed as a percentage of the Rated Pack Amp Hours that was set on the Alerts & Settings screen. The SOH naturally decreases below 100% over time as the battery pack is used and ages. A decrease in SOH can also be caused by insufficient battery pack maintenance, improper charging, and an internal battery failure. Charge cycle History records include the following data: Final State of Charge (SOC) o The battery pack SOC at the end of the charge cycle when (1) the battery charger automatically terminated the charge or (2) the battery charger was manually stopped because it was disconnected from the vehicle or AC power. Final voltage o The battery pack voltage at the end of the charge cycle when (1) the battery charger automatically terminated the charge cycle or (2) the battery charger was manually stopped because it was disconnected from the vehicle or AC power. The battery pack voltage rises during the charge cycle as the SOC approaches 100%. The Final Voltage at 100% SOC for a wet/flooded deep-cycle lead-acid battery pack, which is the most common type of deep-cycle lead-acid battery pack, normally increases when the battery pack is new, levels off, and then slowly decreases later in the life of the battery pack. For 48-volt deep-cycle lead-acid battery packs at 100% SOC and room temperature, the typical Final Voltage range is 58 to 67 volts. For 36-volt deep-cycle lead-acid battery packs at 100% SOC and room temperature, the typical Final Voltage range is 44 to 50 volts. For 24-volt deep-cycle lead-acid battery packs at 100% SOC and room temperature, the typical Final Voltage range is 29 to 34 volts. dcconnect wvms 13 of 23 User s Manual
Amp-hours charged o The amp-hours, or charge, returned to the battery pack. To fully charge a deep-cycle lead-acid battery pack, more amp-hours must be charged than were previously discharged. Please see Percent Amp-Hours Returned below for additional details. Charge time in minutes o The time in minutes that the vehicle was in a charge state. Percent amp-hours returned o Approximately the percentage of ( Amp-Hours Charged / ( Amp-Hours Discharged Regen Amp-Hours )) where Amp-Hours Discharged and Regen Amp-Hours are the values from the previous discharge cycle. To fully charge a deep-cycle lead-acid battery pack, more amp-hours must be charged than were previously discharged. The Percent Amp-Horus Returned is often higher when Amp-Hours Discharged is a small value. Also, many battery chargers periodically administer extended Equalize or Balance charge cycles to maintain the health of the battery pack, which will result in a higher Percent Amp-Horus Returned. Finally, the Percent Amp- Horus Returned is typically higher later in the life of the battery pack. The History records can be ed as a CSV file by tapping the button. 8. ALERTS & SETTINGS SCREEN State of Charge (SOC) Alerts Figure 8-1: dcconnect App Alerts & Settings Screen SOC alerts can be turned on/off by tapping the Show SOC Alerts slide button.
