1 Course Syllabus - CNT 4703 Design and Implementation of Computer Communication Networks Fall 2011 Credits: 3 Course Meets: Tuesday and Thursday 4:00 pm to 5:15 pm in HEC 104 Lab Hours: HEC 322 we will attend Lab during normally scheduled class time Tuesday and Thursday 4:00 pm to 5:15 pm Instructor: Andrew Eisler please use Webcourses Office: HEC Phone: Office Hours: Tuesday 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, or by appointment. Prerequisites: CNT 3004, COP 3502, MAD 2104 or COT 3100C. Catalog Course Description Objectives Data communication networking technologies (TCP/IP, Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, ATM, Frame Relay), products (routers, switches, adapters, cabling), base design and detailed configuration including hands-on exercises. This course provides an overview of the concepts, technology, architecture and software that forms the basis of computer networks. Emphasis on Internet implemented technology along with hands-on network design and practical laboratory exercises will allow the student to define, distinguish and apply Computer Networks concepts and design principles. CISCO LAN HEC 322 IT Network Lab (will attend during regular class hours Monday and Wednesday 4:00 pm to 5:15 pm Grading and Grade Weights Exam 1-15% Exam 2-15% Exam 3-15% Exam 4-15% Homework Assignments -10% Project Assignments - 10% (5% each) Labs 20% (10 Labs) Students MUST pass all 4 exams with a minimum score of 70 percent in order to receive a grade of A in the course. Exam dates will be announced in class and on Webcourses the Course Calendar is below. The Final Exam is mandatory for all or a grade of F will be awarded. Labs are essential part of this course. There will be several lab assignments which you will complete during your lab sessions. In addition to the two project assignments that are graded, homework problems will be assigned. Homework assignments will be collected in class. Bear in mind that the exams will contain similar problems and hence doing these problems regularly is important for your success in this course. Students will be randomly called to the board to complete the homework assignments in front of the class (on the day the assignments are due); make 2 copies one for you, and one to turn in for credit. The homework assignments will count as 10 points toward the final grade. Electronic Devices: Laptops, PDAs, and other mobile computing devices must be turned off during lectures and tests. Cell phones must be turned off before coming to class and absolutely no phone calls during testing.

3 Missed Lectures: Students are responsible for obtaining information about assignments and material covered or provided during missed lectures from other students in the course. Makeup Labs: No makeup labs (or credit for the labs) will be given. Makeup Exams: No makeup exams will be given except for medical reasons with written documentation. Makeup Homework: No makeup homework assignments (quizzes) will be given. Homework assignments must be delivered in person on the day the homework is due. Late Projects (2): Projects must be turned in through Webcourses on the assigned day for full credit. There will be a 10% penalty for projects turned one day within the due date and time. There will be a 25% penalty for projects turned in two days within the due date and time. No projects will be accepted after two days after the Due Date. Academic Integrity: Plagiarism and cheating of any kind on an examination, homework, project, or any other assignment will not be tolerated. It may result in an F for that assignment (and can, depending on the severity of the case, lead to an F for the entire course). The violation may be subject to appropriate referral to the Office of Student Conduct for further action.
