HPE StoreOnce 9
What is StoreOnce? The HPE StoreOnce product consists of a range of purpose-built backup appliances employing in-line deduplication technology. HPE StoreOnce appliances as designed to work with most data protection software products and HPE Recovery Manager Central. StoreOnce is capable of emulating virtual tape libraries, network attach storage shares (CIFS and NFS) as well as the HPE proprietary catalyst technology StoreOnce appliances are either standalone hardware based units or a virtual storage appliance (known as VSA) Hardware is based on HPE Proliant servers. Larger models are scalable and capacity can be increased on the larger models simply by adding HPE JBOD ( just a bunch of disks ) shelves. The multi-node StoreOnce 6600 can also scale-out by adding additional processing nodes StoreOnce appliances provide Ethernet or fibre channel interfaces StoreOnce appliances can replicate data to other StoreOnce appliances StoreOnce appliances can replicate data to public or private cloud storage (currently under controlled release) 10
Deduplication The goal of deduplication is to allow customers to store more data on disk for longer periods by eliminating redundant data. In general deduplication methods fall into two categories. 1. In-line hash-based chunking where deduplication is performed as data is received from the host system. Most appliances including StoreOnce use this method 2. Post processing deduplication, where deduplication is performed following data ingest The HPE StoreOnce range of appliances are purpose-built backup devices utilizing in-line deduplication. The deduplication occurs on the fly as data is received. HPE StoreOnce deduplication is performed as the data is received from the host system and uses in-line hash-based chunking technology. Deduplication appliances have to provide target devices for the host systems, and these typically are Virtual Tape or NAS. HPE has an additional target, known as StoreOnce Catalyst. This is proprietary and can use FC or IP transport. The next slide shows the basic components of an HPE StoreOnce appliance. 11
Deduplication What is it? HP StoreOnce cleverly eliminates duplicate data to reduce the amount of backup data to be stored on disk by typically up to 20x Compares blocks of data being written to the backup device with data blocks previously stored using an electronic fingerprint (hash function) If duplicate data is found, a pointer is established to the original data and an index count maintained This removes, or deduplicates, the redundant blocks For normal business data sets, a deduplication ratio of 20:1 might be expected after a period of >3 months Backup 1 Backup 2 Backup 3 Backup 4 Backup n Unique blocks are compressed and stored in special files within the StoreOnce appliance. HPE StoreOnce appliance stores metadata in addition to data blocks. Metadata Item Index Portion Index Chunk location Index Count (in container) EoD for VT 12

StoreOnce dividing data into chunks Backup data streams are broken into chunks for comparison A data stream can be considered to be an ordered list of chunks. HPE labs developed the technology to eliminate duplicate chunks First backup Second backup Only these chunks have changed. All the duplicates can be replaced by a reference to the original chunk location, plus a count of how many times StoreOnce has received the chunk. Some important questions include How big should the chunk be? Should they be of fixed-size or variable? ISV software uses variable chunks, RMC and plug-ins fixed Where do we make the divisions in the data stream? 14

Ability to provide longer time to next product refresh with Gen9 long-life SKUs and newest storage JBODs Scalable capacity in all but the entry (StoreOnce 3100) product Continues the message of capacity as you grow and, in the case of the 3500, it is simply a matter of licensing capacity already in place Flexible choice for number and types of connectivity Customers can choose the connectivity options that makes the most sense for their environment. Also, provides flexibility for future growth/changes Licenses pre-installed in the factory Provides customers with a smoother out of box experience, no longer needing to download license keys or possibly losing the entitlement documentation during unpacking IPv6 support for NFS and VT iscsi interfaces More customers (especially governmental) need products that support IPv6, and this rounds out support for all StoreOnce interface options Addition of a initialization wizard Provides customers with a tool to walk through the basics of product initialization, making self install easier and lessens support intervention Gen9 CoFC support on IBM AIX platforms Ability to support Fiber Channel environments running StoreOnce Catalyst on IBM AIX servers 16

Why StoreOnce Catalyst can transform your data protection Catalyst stores and protocol have none of restrictions of tape emulation or NAS shares. No unnecessary geometry limitations. (library slots, cartridge sizes etc.) Allows Data Protection software to be aware of the StoreOnce Backup System and its capabilities Allows the backup server to support node failover in StoreOnce Multi-node Systems without complex restart scripts and restart from checkpoints Use bandwidth efficient methods to move (copy) data without re-hydration. This enables backup over WAN, LAN or FC, with increased performance Enables deduplication in different locations (federated deduplication) Support for Micro Focus Data Protector, Veritas NetBackup, Backup Exec, Veeam and Bridgehead Enables Data Protection software to control copies of backups. Copy to multiple locations and to set different expiry dates. Applications are fully aware of all copies and jobs Integrated with Recovery Manager Central for direct backup of 3PAR hosted data Support for Cloud Bank Storage 20

Understanding RMC key technical terms (RMC basic) Some basic definitions of RMC terms will help a lot in the following slides Recovery Set This specifies the data which RMC will protect. It will also specify where the data resides (i.e. which 3PAR/StoreVirtual array). A recovery set is normally a virtual volume or a set of virtual volumes Backup Policy This specifies the target for the Express Protect Backup. This will be a StoreOnce appliance and the catalyst store 62

Create Backup Policy 67
Create Express Protect Select a backup policy (here, the one created in previous slide is used) Backup Type is Auto. This is a sensible default. Why would you want to do a full, when an incremental has exactly the same status in terms of restore? Snapshot Set Type Existing. Useful to protect an existing Snapshot Set. Be careful here, as you may end up having lots of (really fast) backups of the same point in time. We will use New here Recovery Set (what VV on which array?) Snapshot Set Name Snapshot Set Description Optionally, create a schedule here 68

What is Catalyst Copy? RMC has the ability to orchestrate moving of data between 2 catalyst stores. The contents of an Express Protect Backup are copied from the initial Catalyst Store to a destination Catalyst Store. This could be to a different StoreOnce Appliance (perhaps at a different site) or to a catalyst store with Cloud Bank enabled Catalyst Store on the same appliance. The effect of using Catalyst Copy is to have two identical copies of the same backup data. Should one appliance be offline, the second appliance is available for recovery The big plus is that ONLY changed data is moved between stores. For Cloud Bank storage this is a great cost advantage. 70
Create another backup policy, targeting second StoreOnce 71
Create Catalyst Copy Policy The Copy Policy represents a Backup Policy that has been created for use with Catalyst Copy 72
Create Catalyst Copy Refer to Catalyst Copy Policy previously created Choose either an Existing Express Protect, or do a new Express Protect and then Copy 73

Peer Copy Heterogeneous replication between StoreVirtual VSA and 3Par What is it? Volume level data copy enabled from 3PAR to SV VSA & from SV VSA to 3PAR From RMC 5.0 onwards 3PAR to 3PAR copy is possible.
