1 HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY NORTHEAST COLLEGE-NORTHLINE LOCATION Instructor: Marva Taylor Room: 313 Phone No: Office Hours: By appointment COURSE LEVEL- Introductory COURSE SYLLABUS FALL 2011 COMPUTER APPLICATION I POFI 1301 COURSE SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS 3 hours (2 Lectures, 3 Labs) TOTAL COURSE CONTACT HOURS - 80 hours COURSE PREREQUISITES None COURSE DESCRIPTION Overview of computer applications including current terminology and technology. Introduction to computer hardware, software applications, and procedures. The student will identify the components of a computer system. Demonstrate basic proficiency in commonly used applications. Hands-on overview of computer applications which run under windows environment on PC compatible platform, including current terminology and technology. Introduction to computer software applications and procedures. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS This is a hands-on, self-paced, individualized, instructional course. Thus, the student is responsible for reading all appropriate training chapters and completing each training exercise as indicated on the class schedule. There will be lectures on system requirements and procedures. The student is expected to take notes and refer to any instructional handouts provided by the instructor. (It is the student s responsibility, when absent from class, to make arrangements to get study notes before returning to class. It would be wise to exchange phone numbers with other students.) LEARNING OBJECTIVES

2 Students will become skilled in: Microsoft Office Word 2007 Microsoft Office Excel 2007 Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 Microsoft Office Access 2007 and pass the state Certiport Exam administered by the Teacher. As a result, students will be able to secure a high-level job and become skilled in technology applications for the world-of-work. SCANS The Secretary s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) from the U.S. Department of Labor is a list of workplace competencies and foundation skills that can be used to ensure that students achieve the level of skills required to enter employment. The workplace competencies are identified as 1) ability to use resources, 2) interpersonal skills, 3) ability to work with information, 4) understanding of systems, and 5) knowledge and understanding of technology. The foundation skills are identified as 1) basic communication skills, 2) thinking skills, and 3) personal qualities. Required Materials: Pens (blue / black no red) Notebook paper USB Color Folder for Class (Instructor will explain) Textbook Introductory (Microsoft Office 2007) Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty (copying someone else s work, turning in someone s work as your own, copying information or format from a website and using it as your own work without sighting the resource) will result in a grade of F or 0 for the particular test or assignment involved. Please refer to the HISD Student Handbook for further information regarding Academic Dishonesty. Class Attendance: Students are expected to attend all classes 3 or more unexcused absences will result in the student not qualifying for college credit. It is the responsibility of the student to get all the notes and instructions to make-up all assignments missed during the absence within the same amount of time the student was absent. Late Assignments: Students are expected to turn-in assignments on-time. Late work will be accepted if it is submitted by the beginning of the next class period, but the grade will be lowered by one letter grade. The only exception is if the student is absent the day that the work is due; in that case, the assignment is due the next class period. If the student has exceeded five absences, no work will be accepted late.

3 Make-Up Test Policy: Check with your instructor for making up a test. There will be lectures on system requirements and procedures. Phones and other electronic devices are strictly prohibited by HISD and should not be visible during school hours (8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Food and/or drink are not permitted in the classroom.
