2 Edexcel GCSE Design and Technology 2017 Building innovative design skills This guide gives you a brief overview of our new Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Design and Technology qualification, and the comprehensive support you can expect from us as you plan, teach and assess the course. We ll address changes to the qualification and show you how to deliver it effectively, whilst enabling students to use creativity and imagination to design and make prototypes that solve real and relevant problems. We ll provide: A qualification that allows you to specialise...page 4 Greater emphasis on specialist knowledge in our exam paper...page 6 Creative design and making at the heart...page 7 Comprehensive support with new content, including FREE Student Books...pages 8-10 Progression to AS and A level...page 11 Key facts: GCSE (9-1) Design and Technology 2017 These changes will apply to all awarding organisations specifications. Assessment changes: The different titles available in the previous Design and Technology qualifications (Resistant Materials, Graphic Products, Textiles Technology, Systems and Control) have been removed, combining all material areas into a single Design and Technology qualification. NEA is now only 50%, reduced from 60%. Content changes: Mathematical skills must be mapped explicitly. Since these cannot be assessed in the NEA, this will mean that mathematical skills will represent 15% of the overall exam paper. There are now four Assessment Objectives (previously there were two) to allow for an increased focus on analysis and evaluation. *FREE class set of Student Books available We know the changes to the new design and technology specification may be challenging, so to help you in the classroom, we ll provide a free class set of our Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Design and Technology Student Book (worth 630) when you sign up to teach. *T&Cs apply See page 10 for details! 3 A qualification that allows you to specialise From your feedback, we know that one of your main concerns with the government's new guidelines for GCSE Design and Technology is the requirement for all students to study a broad core with a reduced emphasis on specialism. We have carefully structured our new Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Design and Technology qualification to allow you to continue to specialise your teaching as far as is possible under the new requirements. In our qualification: We have six possible material areas to enable specialisation: Metals, Papers and boards, Polymers, Systems, Textiles, or Timbers Students will focus on their specialism in their NEA which is 50% of the overall assessment Our exam paper is split 40% core and 60% specialism. The exam paper is half of the assessment, so assessment of the core content is only 20% overall. We're here to: help you to demystify the new rules around the new qualification requirements and show clearly the content for each material area provide clear routes for specialism in your students chosen material area show you how to support the natural talents of your students without having to be an expert in every discipline yourself. Qualification at a glance Our new Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Design and Technology consists of one externally examined paper and one non-examined assessment (a design and make project). Content and assessment overview Component Overview Assessment Component 1 Examination 50% of qualification Component 2 Design & make project 50% of qualification The paper includes calculations, short-open and open-response questions as well as extended-writing questions focused on: analysis and evaluation of design decisions and outcomes, against a technical principle, for prototypes made by others analysis and evaluation of wider issues in design technology, including social, moral, ethical and environmental impacts. The paper is split into section A core and section B material categories. Three contextual challenges will be provided by the board each year in June, from which students must choose one to respond to. Students will produce a project, linked to their specialism, which consists of a portfolio and a prototype. There are four parts to the assessment: Part 1: Investigate Part 2: Design Part 3: Make Part 4: Evaluate What s happening and when? Written exam, externally assessed Exam 1hr 45mins Total of 100 marks Students must answer all questions in section A (40 marks). Students must choose one specialism in section B either Metals, Papers and Boards, Polymers, Systems, Textiles or Timbers (60 marks). Non-examined assessment, internally assessed and externally moderated. Total of 100 marks Autumn 2016 Spring 2017 Summer 2017 Autumn 2017 Summer 2019 What's happening Join us and your fellow teachers to discuss this and more at one of our free Getting Ready to Teach events from May Accredited specifications What you can do Published resources* available Published resources* available First teaching new specification First assessments new specification Find out about published resources * Attend a free Getting Ready to Teach event Attend a free Getting Ready to Teach event *Pearson s paid-for resources, as well as other endorsed resources, are not a prerequisite for the delivery of our Edexcel specification. 4 5
4 Greater emphasis on specialist knowledge in our exam paper Our written exam is divided into two sections: 40% core content and 60% material categories. The core content allows students to demonstrate their breadth of understanding of design and technology, whilst the material categories enable students to demonstrate their specialist knowledge of one material area. Mathematical skills are fully integrated and appear within familiar contexts to engage students. Creative design and making at the heart The themes of the contextual challenges provided in our specification, such as extending human capacity, will give students the freedom to take design risks and to innovate in a situation where it is safe to test and refine ideas. Students will develop and apply design skills that will help to prepare them for modern contexts in the world today. Section A: Core content 40 marks, including 10 marks for calculations Section B: Material categories 60 marks, including 5 marks for calculations New and emerging technologies will be explored to support design expertise now and in the future. Innovation and creativity is encouraged, adding the confidence to take design risks. This section gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of how to take products to market and build a successful business. It covers aspects of new and emerging technologies, ethics and environmental impact, plus a broad overview of materials and tools used in design. SECTION A CORE Answer ALL questions. Write your answers in the spaces provided. 1 The materials that products are made from are chosen because of their characteristics. (a) Figure 1 shows a table of products. For each of the products shown, give a property of the material it is made from that makes the material suitable for the product. The first one has been done for you. This section concentrates on the students chosen material and allows them to show their specialist knowledge in the subject area they have a passion for from metals, papers and boards, polymers, systems, textiles or timbers. 7 Figure 16 shows a bird table. 120 Non-examined assessment Identify a product that solves a problem from the context provided before investigating existing products, taking account of the needs of the end user and any sustainability issues. Investigate (16 marks) Review how different materials, components, processes and techniques can be used to address the design brief before clearly communicating and justifying the chosen design.
