3 2015 Training Schedule Air Conditioning Clinic April 7 and 8, 2015 Louisville, KY Class description: This two-day class contains fifteen modules designed to give an overview of the many disciplines required to design and install air conditioning and associated systems. Upon completion, the attendee will have a better understanding of the various equipment and systems used in providing comfort cooling today and be able to identify the individual components and their operation. Topics include: heat load estimation, psychrometry, refrigeration system components, refrigerant piping, absorption chillers, centrifugal chillers, helical-rotary chillers, fans, VAV systems, HVAC controls, chilled water systems, water source heat pumps and ice storage systems. Please note this class provides all pertinent handouts but does not come with the Trane Air Conditioning Clinic book. This may be purchased separately. Audience: New designers, engineers, architects and building operators trying to better understand their systems. Also a good review for veterans. CEUs: Earn 16 CEU credits for Kentucky Journeyman license. Fee: $525 Instructor: Nelson Warthan, Industry Trainer Airside Fans and Drive Systems February 17, 2015 Louisville, KY Class description: This course reviews different types of fans and how they are used including their care and maintenance. The entire fan is discussed along with the wheel choices including bearings, belts, and vibration. Sheaves and troubleshooting help round out this topic. Basic discussion on air balancing with terminology is reviewed. Audience: Facility operations personnel, technicians, and service and maintenance personnel. 4 Class Details Building Systems June 11, 2015 Louisville, KY Class description: This class is designed to provide basic knowledge of the various mechanical systems common to commercial buildings, including details on common control setting and component operation. Topics to be discussed will be the need for building zones, low-pressure steam and hot water boilers, the refrigeration cycle, and common refrigeration applications using psychrometric principles, basic and multiple zone air handlers and their common control strategies. The training process is enhanced by instructor demonstrations of system component cut-aways. Audience: Building owners, facility operation personnel and technicians. Instructor: Elmer Franklin, Industry Trainer CenTraVac Chillers March 17, 2015 Louisville, KY Class description: This course reviews the construction and principles of operation of a CenTraVac chiller (models CVHE, CVHF and CVHG) along with the different styles of control panels. In addition, some basic field wiring for this product will be reviewed. Sequence of operation as well as operational troubleshooting is discussed. 5 Class Details Cooling Tower Operation and Maintenance March 19, 2015 Lexington, KY Class description: This course is intended to show the basic concepts of cooling towers and their general operation and maintenance. Attendees will learn of the different types of towers, designs, placement, preventative maintenance, service and controls. This class gives the owner, operator and maintenance person a solid background on how to maintain large air conditioning system condensers and why it is necessary. Audience: Maintenance and service technicians, owners and operators. Instructor: Kyle Chapman, Industry Trainer Electrical Troubleshooting for HVAC June 9, 2015 Louisville, KY Class description: This class provides an overview of electrical terminology, the operation of various electrical devices used in HVAC systems and the procedures for troubleshooting them. It incorporates principles of relays and other switching mechanisms and covers the basic principles of reading schematic wiring diagrams. Attendees will become familiar with HVAC electrical devices and circuits and will be able to use this knowledge to troubleshoot electrical controls and systems in order to repair them. The course has one lab exercise and several exercises in which the instructor will demonstrate issues on commercial air conditioner/furnace system components and students will work in groups of two using schematics to identify faulty electrical components. Audience: Owners, contractors, technicians and facility operation personnel with an experienced knowledge of electrical fundamentals wishing to gain a better knowledge of electrical components and circuits as well as troubleshooting techniques used on HVAC systems. 6 Class Details Engineers Newsletter Live Engineers Newsletter Live is a series of programs focused on the design and control of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The content is objective, technical and educational. The intended audience of the series is HVAC system designers, although a given program may also be of interest to others in the industry. All programs are AIA approved and many are USGBC approved for LEED credentialing maintenance. Attendees can earn CEUs by participating. March 11, 2015 Variable-Speed Compressors on Chillers Evansville, IN 12:00 p.m. 1:30 p.m. CST Lexington, KY 12:00 p.m. 1:30 p.m. EST Louisville, KY 12:00 p.m. 1:30 p.m. EST Class description: Variable-speed drives are available on chillers with compressors of all types. This Engineers Newsletter Live discusses the operational, performance and application differences for the various compressor types, particularly centrifugal (dynamic compression) and screw and scroll (positive displacement compression). Attendees will leave with an understanding of which technologies bring real value to different system applications. CEUs: Earn 1 PDH for self-reporting. This Engineers Newsletter Live will discuss several topics related to selection and application of coils, including the effects of temperature and flow rates on both chilled and hot-water cooling coils, proper piping for steam heating coils, proper condensate trapping, and common problems caused by improper coil selection or application. CEUs: Earn PDH for self-reporting (45 Minutes). Fee: Complimentary Presenters: John Murphy, Brian Hafendorfer, Todd Michael - Trane Class description Acoustics: Evaluating Sound Data: Sound data is the foundation of acoustical analysis and it is often used for comparing equipment from different manufacturers. Unfortunately not all manufacturers present sound data in the same format. This Engineers Newsletter Live will focus on clarifying sound data terms and weighting methods so that the differences in sound data presentation are apparent. 8 Class Details Geothermal Technology / Heat Pump Operation and Maintenance April 9, 2015 Louisville, KY Class description: This class is designed to acquaint attendees with the design and operation of heat pumps. Topics include the basic refrigeration cycle, the concept of heat exchangers, reversing valves, defrost controls, troubleshooting techniques, normal service and preventative maintenance. Audience: This workshop is designed for technicians, service and maintenance personnel and owners. Instructor: Nelson Warthan, Industry Trainer Heat Pump Operation and Service February 18, 2015 Louisville, KY Class description: Attendees will learn about the various styles of heat pumps and review the basic operation in heating and cooling cycles along with refrigerant flows. The electrical side will be reviewed including different types of thermostats. General maintenance and troubleshooting of the entire system completes the class. Please note: Accessing a refrigerant system requires an EPA Certification. Audience: Service contractors, maintenance operators and technicians. Instructor: Kyle Chapman, Industry Trainer Page 7

9 Class Details Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) January 13, 2015 Lexington, KY Class description: This class outlines how to identify potential indoor air quality problems as well as the possible effects and concerns of the building inhabitants and the general public. This course also covers how to remedy current indoor air quality problems and prevent possible future occurrences. Audience: Building owners, maintenance operators and service technicians. Instructor: Kyle Chapman, Industry Trainer IntelliPak Rooftop Unit Troubleshooting March 18, 2015 Louisville, KY Class description: This workshop is designed to look at the structure and selection of the IntelliPak rooftop unit. The class will address installation, components, set-up, maintenance, and service. Attendees can expect to gain an understanding of how to use the appropriate manuals for service and operations. Audience: Owners, operators, installers, and service personnel. Instructor: Kyle Chapman, Industry Trainer Page 8

10 Class Details Precedent /Voyager Rooftop Unit Operation and Maintenance February 19, 2015 Evansville, IN Class description: This course is designed to acquaint attendees with the Precedent / Voyager rooftop units (commercial 2 to 50 ton rooftop air conditioners) with constant volume or variable air volume controls. The program focuses on installation, operation, maintenance procedures and system troubleshooting and will conclude with controlling aspects of the units. Audience: Technicians, owners, service and installing contractors. Instructor: Kyle Chapman, Industry Trainer Preventative Maintenance for Building Systems June 10, 2015 Louisville, KY Class description: This course prepares attendees to start a preventative maintenance program and/or to more efficiently operate an existing program. It will provide attendees a better understanding of preventative maintenance needs for building mechanical systems, including air handling systems, motors, bearings, coils, filters, VAV boxes, pump motors, bearings, seals, chillers and cooling towers. Several technical maintenance strategies are discussed, including run-to-fail, preventative maintenance and reliability-centered maintenance. Audience: Facility operation personnel, technicians and management whose responsibilities are associated with the maintenance of building systems. Instructor: Elmer Franklin, Industry Trainer Page 9

11 Class Details Series R Chillers January 14, 2015 Louisville, KY Class description: The Series R Chiller class provides attendees with the concept of the rotary compressor and the Series R machines in which they are used. The class looks at both water-cooled and air-cooled chillers. System components, UCP setup, operation, maintenance, variable speed fans, troubleshooting and controls are also covered. Audience: Service personnel, owners and operating personnel. CEUs: Earn 8 CEU credits for Kentucky Journeyman licenses. Instructor: Kyle Chapman, Industry Trainer Variable Air Volume May 18, 2015 Louisville, KY Class description: This class focuses on the structure and the selection of variable air volume (VAV) units. Types of VAV units, locations, components, set-up, elements of design, air flow and more will be discussed. Audience: Beginners, engineers, as well as installers and service personnel. CEUs: Earn 8 CEU credits for Kentucky Journeyman licenses. Instructor: Nelson Warthan, Industry Trainer Page 10

12 General Information Voyager Rooftop Units May 19, 2015 Louisville, KY Class description: The class is designed to acquaint attendees with the design, installation, operation and maintenance of the Voyager rooftop unit. This program reviews the installation and controls connections, operation settings and maintenance activities and all machine components. Audience: Technician, owners, maintenance, service and installing contractors. CEUs: Earn 8 CEU credits for Kentucky Journeyman licenses. Instructor: Nelson Warthan, Industry Trainer Continuing Education for HVAC Professionals The following link ( is to continuing education courses that are approved by United States Green Building Council (USGBC) for LEED credentialing maintenance and American Institute of Architects (AIA) for sustainable design and health, safety and welfare to help design professionals make sound decisions that meet or exceed the technical requirements of a green building. All courses are available at no charge to demonstrate our commitment to sustainability through sound HVAC design principles. These courses may also qualify for state-licensed professional continuing education. Please check with your local state board to find out if these courses meet local requirements. Once you have viewed the online course, please take the required assessment quiz. When you have successfully submitted your quiz, Trane will award you with a certificate of completion which provides the information required to self-report credit using the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) online form. AIA professionals need to provide your AIA member number. Trane will submit your member information to AIA. Page 11

13 General Information Payment Payment must be received prior to the class. Discounts Registration and payment received 30 days prior to the class receive a 5% discount. All Harshaw Trane service agreement holders and DMI customers receive a 15% discount on all training classes unless otherwise noted. Lodging If you require overnight accommodations, Harshaw Trane has negotiated discounted rates at several hotels close to the training centers. Continuing Education Credit Where mentioned, these courses have been certified by the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction and will be accepted as meeting required continuing education (CEU) credits for up to eight (8) CEUs for Kentucky Journeyman licenses only. Approval refers to recognition of educational activities only and does not imply approval or endorsement of any products of the Harshaw Trane company. For all other professional development credit, attendees may selfreport with the certificate of attendance. Instructors Kyle Chapman is an interactive, professional trainer specializing in strengthening career skills related to the HVAC/R industry. Mr. Chapman has over 25 years of experience in the HVAC/R industry with both mechanical and equipment distributors and has served 16 years with Trane Corporate. He holds instructor and facilitator certifications. Elmer Franklin has specialized in the building operation and maintenance field and was a corporate technical specialist and educational director for a five-state area, providing technical assistance and training for 600 employees that maintained 4,000 buildings. Mr. Franklin retired from the corporate operation in 2000 and now conducts seminars. Nelson Warthan is President of The Warthan Group, Inc., a nationally recognized training firm specializing in HVAC, environmental, regulatory and technical issues. Mr. Warthan has over 30 years of experience in the HVAC industry. He holds instructor credentials in business and industrial management. Page 12
