3 Bachelor of Science in Information Technology Program Level Outcomes Assessment Summary Information Technology Vision Our vision is to provide the Pine Ridge and surrounding areas quality Information Technology professionals with a foundation in operating systems and networking. Information Technology Mission Information Technology Department graduates will demonstrate a technical networking mind to fulfill the Information Technology needs of the Oglala Lakota People. Information Technology Program Student Learning Outcomes (P-SLO) The student learning outcomes describe the knowledge, skills and core competencies of Information Technology graduates of Oglala Lakota College. Our goal in Information Technology Department it to graduate students who demonstrate a technical networking mind as Network Managers to fulfill the Information Technology needs of the Oglala Lakota People. At the time of program completion, each student will: 1. Project Management: Communicate effectively with network stakeholders through solid project management. 2. Hardware: Install, maintain and support computer hardware in a networked and stand-alone environment. 3. Operating Systems: Install, maintain and support network and client operating systems. 4. Network: Install, maintain and support a network given a hypothetical or real LAN or WAN situation. 5. Security: Secure devices, networks and data. 6. Indirect Measures Successful employment in the field for 3 years Progression into a related graduate degree Career/Job Titles IT Systems Engineer Network Systems Administrator Computer Technical Support Entry Requirements Oglala Lakota College pursues an open door policy in which all qualified students will be admitted without regard to race, religion, origin or political belief. Enrollment in the college does not guarantee admission to any specific program, nor to any and all courses of study. To qualify for full access to college level courses, students must demonstrate minimum 10.1 grade level of reading comprehension as indicated by college readiness assessment (see policy ). Admission All applicants seeking admission to Oglala Lakota College must send each of the items listed below BEFORE, he/she will be admitted: Complete Application and declare a major. Students may only declare one major at a time while attending OLC. Furnish a copy of your high school transcript, or certificate of high school equivalent (GED Diploma) MANDATORY. A student with a Bachelor's Degree or higher will be required to submit documentation verifying the degree awarded. Transfer students must send official college transcripts. Verification of Tribal Enrollment if the student is a tribal member of a Federally Recognized Tribe. Complete College Readiness Assessment (see policy ). Transfer students who do not have approved transfer college credit for English Composition or Algebra must complete the college readiness assessment. Page 2

5 Any student falsifying information is subject to being dropped from all classes. Oglala Lakota College does not admit under the Ability to Benefit criteria. Program Level Assessment Cycle We believe that each course in the BS of IT contributes to the student's body of learning and ultimately career success. Each course will be assessed on a course level and its contribution to the degree after the course is taught as identified in the Program Learning Outcome-Core Value Matrix. (See PLO-VC Matrix). Program level assessment is anticipated to be a six year cycle synced to the time frame to complete the IT program of study. Statement of Course Learning Outcomes Course learning outcome evaluation uses a combination of Problem Based Learning (PBL) lab/project accompanied by a written Lab Report. Each PBL/LR is an artifact of course level and a potential artifact of program level assessment. Each artifact selected for program level assessment is identified in the course syllabus. Assessment method will be to evaluate selected artifacts collected from homework assignments of the IT-153 Survey of Operating systems and IT-243 Introduction to Networks courses. 3b. The Assessment Analysis and Conclusions as Implemented 1. Modifications to the above plan We opted to use the course goal from the syllabus with the realization the goal was a much better and measurable outcome. We opted to not use the course outcomes from the syllabus with the realization they were a bullet list of topics. 2. What were the Assessment Strategies? 2a. What were the program level outcomes (PLOs) assessed? Operating Systems: Install, maintain and support network and client operating systems. Network: Install, maintain and support a network given a hypothetical or real LAN or WAN situation. 2b. What were the course level outcomes (CLOs) assessed? Operating Systems: Compare and contrast DOS, *nix (UNIX, Linux, MAC) and Windows operating systems. Network: Prepare the student to pass the CompTia Network+ national certification exam. 2c. What were the assessment methods used to assess the outcomes? IT-153 Survey of Operating Systems Selected questions from the mid term and final exam. IT-243 Introduction to Networks A mid term and final exam that is congruent to the Network+ certification will be part of the course. 2d. What was the Milestone/Target ()? 8. 11 9 Assessment Methods The Math and Science program uses a Program Strategy Form filled out at the beginning of the semester to determine what program outcome will be assessed and what course or courses will be used. A program learning outcome (PLO) form is completed at the end of the semester. A student learning outcomes (SLO) form is used to assess courses within the department. A faculty course feedback form is completed for all courses taught during the semester. Additionally, we coordinate with the General Education director to assess courses for general education outcomes. The Student Course Assessment Form is completed by the students on Jenzabar. The PLO and SLO results are organized and aggregated into the Institutional Effectiveness Plan (IEP) and the annual report. Type of Feedback Math, Science and Technology will review assessment results to make improvements to the programs. The Student Course Assessment Form and Faculty Feedback From will be used to make improvements to courses. How data will be used to improve program or revise curricula Data will be utilized to update curriculum and course content. We will also use results to make program improvements. Plan of Study *Information Technology Faculty reserves the right to design and implement individual plans of study to specific cohorts of information technology students. Individualized cohort plans of study reckon the cooperation and assistance of the students for whom the cohort plan is developed.
