1 Section 1: Background 1) What is KMIP? KMIP is the Key Management Interoperability Protocol, a standard defined by OASIS ( KMIP is a protocol used for the communication between clients and servers to perform certain management operations on objects stored and maintained by a key management system. 2) What is the KMIP Conformance Test Program? The KMIP Conformance Test Program enables organizations with KMIP implementations in their products to test those products for protocol conformance against the OASIS KMIP Specifications at the SNIA Technology Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. 3) Why should my company participate in the KMIP Conformance Test Program? KMIP support has become a requirement for companies to procure Storage, Security and Key Management products that interoperate in a multi-vendor, plug-and-play environment. This program provides independent verification from a trusted third-party that a given KMIP implementation conforms to the KMIP standard. This verification gives your customers confidence that your product interoperates with other KMIP-enabled products. Note that SNIA does not warrant that any tested product is suitable for a particular purpose. 4) Who can test? Any organization with a KMIP implementation can test. Membership in SNIA and the SSIF is not required, although we strongly encourage joining. There is a significant discount in the test fee for SSIF members. 5) What can be tested? Products that implement KMIP Client or Server functionality as described by the OASIS KMIP Standard ( can be tested. 6) Is this program limited to storage products? Absolutely not, any product that implements KMIP Client or Server functionality may be tested. 7) How is testing done? Products are tested for behavior that matches KMIP profiles defined by the OASIS KMIP Standard and selected for testing. Page 1 of 11

2 8) What are the KMIP Test Program fees? Test fees are dependent on the type of product (Client or Server), the number of profiles you want tested, and whether your company is a member of the SSIF. Test fees are subject to change, and the definitive references are the Request Forms. No. The KMIP Test Program is intended to provide a confidential, vendor-neutral, non-competitive environment focused on advancing the adoption of KMIP in products. SNIA's confidentiality obligations are defined in the Program Documents. 10) How is KMIP Server testing performed? The vendor places the Server in the SNIA Technology Center and trains the KMIP Test Team on its use. Software-only Servers may be installed on VMware x86/x86-64 Virtual Machines provided by the SNIA Technology Center. The KMIP Test Team tests the Server using test tools and reports results to the vendor. 11) How is KMIP Client testing performed? The vendor can place the Client in the SNIA Technology Center and train the KMIP Test Team on its use. Alternatively, the vendor can connect the Client over the internet to the test apparatus at the SNIA Technology Center. The KMIP Test Program Team, with assistance from vendor staff, tests the Client and reports results to the vendor. 12) How is KMIP Interoperability Testing performed? The SSIF's KMIP Test Program focuses on KMIP Conformance Testing. The OASIS KMIP Technical Committee hosts KMIP Interoperability "Plug-Fests" on a regular basis. Page 2 of 11

3 13) Is testing pass/fail or does it return a grade? Testing is pass/fail for each tested Profile. If a product fails, the vendor is given the opportunity to make changes and have the product re-tested a single time. Only pass results will be published. 14) Where can test results be found? Organizations with products that have passed the tests can have the results posted by the SSIF to the SSIF KMIP pages on the SNIA web site: 15) Do vendors control posting of test results? Yes. A vendor may choose to run the tests and not have their results published. Additionally, vendors may request that results not be posted until a specific date. 16) What is the intended audience for test results? KMIP customers and their KMIP product vendors are the intended audience for test results. 17) How may test results be used (i.e., what is considered fair use ) by testing vendors, other vendors, or others who have access to test results (e.g., public)? Test results may be used to help customers choose products that have successfully passed the KMIP Test Program. Organizations that have successfully completed the tests can refer to the successful result in marketing and sales material; they can link to the SSIF KMIP page for more information. Once posted, the results are public and can be used by anyone as long as they are properly attributed. 18) Is there a process for parties to contest test results? Yes. There is an appeal process in place, and documented in the KMIP Test Program Documents. In cases where a problem exists with the test cases associated with a Profile or where the specification itself is unclear or open to interpretation, the SSIF will bring the issue to the OASIS KMIP Technical Committee for resolution. 19) We think our product is ready for testing but we don t have tools to verify this. Does SNIA provide KMIP test tools so we can verify that our KMIP implementation will pass before we submit it for formal testing? SNIA does not offer any tools for a test customer to use to prepare for testing. There are third parties that may offer tools and services that address KMIP implementation. 20) Is there a discount for testing multiple similar products? No. Each product is tested independently and pricing policies reflect this fact. 21) Can one test order cover multiple products to be tested? No. A separate order (with its own Test Request) is required for each product to be tested. Page 3 of 11

4 22) Our products share a KMIP Implementation code base. If one of the products passes the test, can the other products claim conformance based on that representative product passing the test? No. Conformance testing is done by SNIA on a product-by-product basis. Each product must be tested for conformance separately. Test results are published by product name and version. Consumers of this product look for a specific product listing for validation. 23) Who do I contact for more information? 5 Section 2: Signing Up To Participate In the Program 24) How do I sign up to participate in the KMIP Conformance Test Program? Each organization must complete and submit three documents to SNIA. The three documents are: o General Terms and Conditions, o Application and Agreement, and o Client or Server Test Request Form. 25) Where can I find the KMIP Conformance Test Program Documents? All Documents required to participate in the KMIP Conformance Test Program can be found at the bottom of this page: 26) Do I have to submit a Terms and Conditions (Ts&Cs) document and an Application and Agreement (A&A) document with each order? No. SNIA requires that each participating company have a current version and completely executed Terms and Conditions (Ts&Cs) document and a current version and completely executed Application and Agreement (A&A) document on file before accepting any orders. Each order must have a completely executed Request for Client Testing or Request for Server Testing order form. 27) How are changes that my legal team has suggested to any of the program documents handled? The documents provided by SNIA shall be used without changes as products have already been tested following the existing program documents. The documents were developed in a lengthy process involving legal and business review by SNIA and the SSIF member companies. In the unlikely event that event that any requests for changes are considered, they must be taken through the SSIF, SNIA legal review, and the SNIA Board of Directors, a potentially lengthy process. 28) I don t have all of the information to complete the order form. Can I still submit the order form? Test Requests are not accepted unless all of the required information is present on the Test Request Form. 29) I don t have a Purchase Order (PO) yet. Can I still submit the order form? A Test Order is not complete without a Purchase Order number. 30) We have budgeted for testing this quarter. When will SNIA bill us for testing? SNIA will issue an invoice for KMIP testing as soon as the Test Request has been accepted by the KMIP Test Team. Page 5 of 11

6 Section 3: Preparing For the Test 31) We need our product to successfully pass the conformance test by a certain date. Can SNIA support this? The answer to Question 43) lists the steps involved in testing. Many of these steps are not under the control of the KMIP Test Team. Also, see Question 44). The best simple advice is to start early, be thorough and complete in preparation, and provide all needed inputs and assistance required by the KMIP Test Team in a timely manner. The KMIP Test Team strives to execute Test Orders expeditiously. 32) I would like to test my KMIP Client implementation over the Internet. How is this done? The KMIP Test Team will coordinate a schedule for making the KMIP Server test environment available for your testing. The KMIP Test Team will share the IP Address of the KMIP Server for configuring your KMIP Client. The test environment will capture log files for each test case that your KMIP Client is testing. The test case log files will subsequently be analyzed to verify conformance with the KMIP Standard. 33) I would like to test my KMIP Client implementation over the Internet, but my IT department s policies won t allow me to remotely access the SNIA Technology Center. What can I do? The KMIP Client product may be shipped to the SNIA Technology Center and tested there, provided that it is within the parameters of equipment that can be supported at the Technology Center. 34) I need to ship my product to the SNIA Technology Center. What is the procedure? Please coordinate with the KMIP Test Team to verify that the equipment can be supported, for target shipping information and the expected arrival date and time of the equipment. 35) Who is responsible for Installation and Verification of my product at the SNIA Technology Center? Even though the SNIA Technology Center is a restricted access facility due to privacy and non-disclosure constraints, the test customer is responsible for the Installation and Verification of their products while guiding the KMIP Test Team utilizing state-of-the-art remote conferencing and desktop sharing technologies. 36) After installation of my product at the SNIA Technology Center, how does the KMIP Test Team learn about my product? The test customer is responsible for training the SNIA Technology Center KMIP Test Team on the product's configuration and operation to accomplish the tests. The KMIP Test Team will securely document the information in an appropriate manner, subject to non-disclosure agreement constraints. Page 6 of 11

7 37) What resources can the KMIP Test Program provide to support installing my product at the Technology Center? For a hardware product, we can offer up to 6U of rack space and up to 10A of 220V 60 Hz AC power. For a software product, the Technology Center can provide a virtual machine (from a VMware ESXi server) running either your software as the complete VM code load or a CentOS 6.x system provided by the Technology Center. If a software product requires some other environment, then the Test Customer must provide the hardware supporting that environment see above case of hardware product. 38) Our product runs on Linux but is not certified to run on CentOS Linux. Will SNIA acquire the specific version of Linux that our product requires? No. In this case, the best solution is for the customer to provide SNIA with a VMware virtual machine (VM) of the product environment, appropriately licensed. This virtual machine will be installed on our VMware server. 39) When is my product ready for the KMIP Conformance Test? Your product will be considered ready-to-test when the proper installation, setup, and configuration has been verified and successful communication with SNIA's KMIP Test Environment has been verified. 8 Section 4: The Test 40) How does SNIA test my product? The KMIP Test Team connects the product under test with the Test Environment and establishes KMIP communication. For a server test, the test team sends the command sequences defined by the profile test case for the selected KMIP profiles, and logs the requests and responses. For a client test, the test team seeks to operate the client to send the request sequences defined by the test case for the selected KMIP profiles, to the Test Environment server and logs the requests and responses. In either case, the log files are analyzed for conformance with the KMIP profile test case and a detailed report of what has been tested and any differences that were observed is produced and sent to the customer. 41) What is the norm against which my product is tested? The OASIS KMIP Standard includes test cases with expected results in various Profile documents. Testing is done against those test cases as defined by the OASIS Key Management standard, version v1.2 dated May The standard can be found at 42) Who does the testing and has access to the product under test and the details of the test? Testing is done by the KMIP Test Team which is made up of two SNIA contractors and one SNIA staff member. Only these individuals, bound by confidentiality agreements, normally have access to the product and test results. Other individuals, as designated in the A&A may, on a need-to-know basis, also have access to information about the test. The KMIP Test Team rigorously endeavors to maintain the confidentiality of Test Orders, the identity of test customers and equipment under test, and test results prior to publication. 43) What are the steps involved in product testing? The steps involved in product testing are: a. General Terms and Conditions agreement executing a new agreement or verify that the current version of the agreement is in place b. A&A executing a new agreement or verify that an already executed version of the agreement is in place c. Test Request receive, verify that all information is provided and consistent, execute the contract d. SNIA issues invoice for requested tests e. If test is onsite, product is sent to SNIA Technology Center f. Customer assists the KMIP Test Team in installation of product g. Customer trains the KMIP Test Team in operation of product h. Customer supports the KMIPTest Team in connecting product to the Test Environment i. KMIP Test Team conducts tests, based on Profiles selected, and collects logs of commands/responses j. KMIP Test Team analyzes logs of commands/responses to determine pass/failure status of each step. KMIP Test Team may (without revealing Test Customer identify or Product identity) seek Standard and SSIF policy clarifications from the SSIF k. KMIP Test Team produces a detailed test report Page 8 of 11

9 l. Detailed Test Report sent to test customer m. If customer has issues with Test Report i. Customer may raise those issues with KMIP Test Team ii. KMIP Test Team considers issues. KMIP Test Team may (without revealing Test Customer identify or Product identity) seek Standard and SSIF policy clarifications from the SSIF iii. KMIP Test Team may, at its discretion, revise Detailed Test Report n. If customer wishes to revise product to address issues, customer does product engineering and returns to step (e) above (one opportunity per Test Request) o. If customer has issues with Test Report, customer may pursue formal appeal process through SSIF p. At customer s discretion, Profiles passing tests are listed on the SNIA SSIF web page q. If payment for the Test Order is not received within a reasonable time, test results may be removed from the SNIA SSIF web page. 44) How long does testing take? In our experience, it has typically taken from 9 to 12 weeks from initial receipt of a Test Order to posting of successful test results. Your mileage WILL vary. 45) How does the testing process work? The answer to Question 43) lists the steps involved in testing. If there are still unanswered questions, please e- mail them to the KMIP Test Team for consideration. Conference calls to discuss them can also be arranged. 46) What happens if the product cannot be tested due to product setup and configuration issues? The KMIP Test Team will make a reasonable effort to work with the customer to properly setup and configure the product with the KMIP Test Environment. Page 9 of 11

10 Section 5: After the Test 47) What happens if my product does not pass the requested tests? If the product does not pass some or all of the tests requested, the vendor has one opportunity to revise the product and have it retested. When testing is complete, the vendor can elect to have Test Profiles that passed testing listed on the SNIA website. 48) What happens if my product must be modified in order to pass the requested tests? If the product fails to pass all selected profiles, the test customer has one opportunity to modify the product. The KMIP Test Team will then retest all selected profiles on the product and issue a new detailed report of results. If further changes to the product are needed, a new Test Request must be issued. 49) If my product fails one or more tests, what happens? The KMIP Test Team provides the test customer with a Detailed Test Report that contains detailed information about any failures encountered during testing. The test customer can modify the product so that it will conform and resubmit the product for retesting. The fee paid by the customer with the order form includes one retest. Further retests must be by submitting a new Test Request and payment of the indicated fees. 50) What does SNIA communicate to me about the status of product testing? In the normal course of events, the Test Team will communicate detailed test results to the test customer in a Detailed Test Report that lists the tests that have been performed and the results that were achieved, with detailed information on any tests that failed. 51) Can I get immediate feedback on test progress and especially what tests my product has or hasn t passed? The KMIP Test Team does not communicate incomplete and partial test results. We believe that it is in everyone s best interest that the results communicated represent our complete and well-considered analysis. 52) What recourse do I have if I don t agree with the test results? As a first step, present the issue to the KMIP Test Team. This is best done in writing with specific references to test logs and the OASIS KMIP Standard profile documents. If the KMIP Test Team is convinced that it has improperly interpreted the KMIP Standard or made an error in its analysis of test logs, it will update the Test Report. In doing this the KMIP Test Team may take issues of interpretation of the KMIP standard and of KMIP Test Program policy to the SNIA SSIF for resolution, all without references to the company or product being tested. If the KMIP Test Team is not convinced, you may exercise the formal appeal process documented in the (A&A), taking the issue to the SSIF for resolution. Page 10 of 11

11 53) Testing of my product which was installed at the SNIA Technology Center is now complete. How does my product get returned to me? If the product is no longer required by the SNIA Technology Center, please coordinate with the KMIP Test Team for proper packing and shipping of your product back to your organization. Page 11 of 11
