1.4 PROFESSIONAL PROJECT The purpose of the Professional Project at Diploma and at Professional Graduate Diploma levels is to demonstrate an appropriate level of professional competence in the development of a suitable computer-based solution to a problem. To demonstrate this fully, the project must be real in the sense that the end product can be used to do a real job for users other than you the candidate. A development for use by you alone, a collection of course exercises, a literature search, or a descriptive evaluation is not acceptable. If possible, the project should come from your normal work. All Professional Projects will be expected to include evidence which demonstrates that the work undertaken is of professional quality and value to the customer. If the project contains confidential material, you are invited to contact the HEQ Office for advice. Before submitting your Professional Project, it is mandatory that you submit a project proposal so that the examiners can comment on the suitability of the work proposed and give formal approval. The Professional Project may be undertaken at Diploma in IT level or at Professional Graduate Diploma in IT level, according to the qualification you are aiming at. If you pass the Professional Project at Diploma in IT level you cannot resubmit the same project, but modified, at Professional Graduate Diploma in IT level. Exceptionally, if you submit a project at Professional Graduate Diploma in IT level you may be offered a pass at Diploma in IT level. If you accept the pass at Diploma in IT level it will not then be possible to resubmit the same project, but modified, at Professional Graduate Diploma in IT level THE PROJECT PROPOSAL The purpose of the proposal for the Professional Project, at Diploma and at Professional Graduate Diploma levels, is to set up a framework to enable the project work to be managed, achieved and documented efficiently and successfully. It should be constructed so that the prospective project work may be assessed in advance for fitness; and so that advice may be given to enable that fitness to be achieved and maintained. While the proposal is being constructed, pay close attention to the guidelines for the Professional Project so that you understand the requirements for the final submission. You will need to provide enough information to show how those requirements are to be met. If in any doubt, consult your authenticator for assistance in this aspect. The proposal should be approximately 500 words in length, giving a brief summary of the intended Professional Project. Please refer to Section 5 below, Structure of Project. You must also provide details of your intended Project Authenticator, with their BCS Membership Number or CV as appropriate.

1.4.2 STRUCTURE OF THE PROJECT PROPOSAL Your project proposal should convey to the examiners the nature of both the product itself and the process by which it will be produced. The proposal should include: Identification - a working title, whether the submission is at Diploma or at Professional Graduate Diploma level, together with your name and membership number. Similar details should be given for the project s authenticator and for the project supervisor and/or a client, where relevant. Background - a short overview, with aims of the project, and any external involvement, such as an employer. A brief appreciation of why you chose this project work, and where the deliverables might be used in the future. Objectives what you expect to attain, which can be measured. Project deliverables should be included here. Scope and approach the boundaries of the work items that are expected to be covered, and those parts beyond the project s expectation. The approaches to project management, analysis and design, implementation and testing may be described here. Fitness - You must include how the work will be shown to be fit for its intended purpose. Group work (applies ONLY to Diploma level work) - whether the work is to be an individual submission or the work is to be undertaken as part of a group. Milestones an overview of the expected timescale. The above list does not imply that a particular method or approach has to be adopted. Any professional approach is acceptable but the proposal should address the above issues. Other aspects, such as likely resources and expected risks, might also form part of the proposal. Remember that the proposal should not exceed 500 words in length: this guideline should be sufficient to enable enough detail to be given without including superfluous material SIZE OF PROJECT You will submit a report on the practical implementation of a computer-based project (as defined below). The Professional Project should involve the development of a computer-based solution to a practical problem. This will normally, but not necessarily, involve the candidate in the production of software The Professional Project may be part of a group project but each candidate must individually satisfy all the requirements and the report must clearly identify the candidate's individual contribution The size of the report should be approximately 5,000 words excluding appendices

Professional Project (Professional Graduate Diploma in IT Level) You will submit a report on the practical implementation of a computer-based project (as defined below). The Professional Project should involve the development of a computer-based solution to a practical problem. The report must put the problem in context, include a survey of relevant literature, and provide a list of references The Professional Project should be an individual piece of work undertaken by the candidate alone. Group projects are not allowed The size of the report should be approximately 10,000 words excluding appendices AUTHENTICATION & SUBMISSION The Professional Project must be authenticated using the forms provided, either by a BCS Professional Member (i.e. MBCS/FBCS) or an IT Professional (e.g. Manager, Supervisor or Tutor) with a minimum of 5 years managerial/supervisory experience. Non BCS members must submit a detailed CV to the BCS indicating the candidate(s) for whom they are acting as authenticator. You should choose a person who can perform this authentication role and also provide you with advice about the level and scope of appropriate project work. You should submit the report in a folder (or binder) identified by your name and reference number and clearly stating the level of the project (either Diploma in IT or Professional Graduate Diploma in IT). Both a hard copy AND soft copy of the project must be submitted. The soft copy must be submitted on disk in Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, rich text format, PDF, postscript, plain text or HTML format. BCS reserves the right to scan the project work through anti-plagiarism software STRUCTURE OF PROJECT Your Professional Project report should convey to the examiners the nature of both the product itself and the process by which the product was produced. The report must contain: Abstract a brief summary of the Professional Project, describing its nature and scope Requirements Analysis and Specification how the specification was created, communication with the users/owners, relevant constraints, rationale for choices made, the specification itself, and the initial work schedule Design how the product was designed, including design method, design process and outcome. This should include the rationale for design decisions and trade-offs made, such as selection of algorithms, data structures and implementation environments as appropriate Implementation how the product was constructed, including choice of any packages, tools, development environments and language. The recognition of the importance of relevant documentation Testing evidence of how the product was debugged, tested or evaluated, as appropriate, to demonstrate that the specification has been satisfied

Critical appraisal a review of the Professional Project looking back at both the product and the process. This should include an analysis of the major design, implementation and testing decisions, lessons learnt by the candidate during the course of the Professional Project, and an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the product and the process The above list does not imply that a particular method or approach has to be adopted. Any professional approach is acceptable but the report must address the above issues ROLE OF CANDIDATE 2. ELIGIBILITY It is not expected that all Professional Projects will involve candidates equally in the stages of specification, design, implementation and testing. It is recognised that you might not have been able to implement the end product personally. Nevertheless, you must have played a significant role in the implementation and testing. You are expected to have personal involvement in the demonstration of the product s "fitness for purpose". It is a requirement for all Professional Projects that they contain aspects of implementation. If your project is centered on hardware development, systems analysis or programming, this requirement can be satisfied by a description of the implementation and testing phases. If your project is centered on "management" issues such as feasibility studies, procurement exercises or computer auditing, the requirement can be satisfied by the prior creation of a set of criteria for acceptance and a set of procedures and tests to determine whether the criteria have been satisfied. As long as you participate in the creation of the criteria and the subsequent acceptance testing, such Professional Projects are in general acceptable. There are no formal academic entry requirements for any part of the Examinations. However, all candidates must be members of BCS and can join as student members at the time of entry. Candidates who allow their BCS membership to lapse will be required to reinstate their membership. Candidates are strongly urged to read the accompanying Notes for Guidance and to take account of any prior knowledge expected in the Syllabus. 3. ENTRY FOR A MODULE OR PROJECT All candidates must be members of BCS and can join as student members when an examination entry is submitted. Candidates who allow their registration to lapse will be required to reinstate their membership on the submission of subsequent examination entries. All written examinations are offered once a year in the April/May. A list limited to the Certificate modules, most popular Diploma modules and most popular Professional Graduate Diploma modules is offered in October. A timetable is published on the BCS Higher Education Qualifications website. 3.1 ENTRY FOR A MODULE OR PROFESSIONAL PROJECT

Applicants wishing to enter for one or more modules, or wishing to submit a Professional Project, must: a. Submit their application on the BCS Higher Education Qualifications entry form accompanied by the correct fees. b. Submit the entry form(s) by the advertised closing dates. Dates for written examinations are set annually and will be advertised on the BCS website with associated closing dates. Local variations may apply. Project proposals must be submitted by 31 st August each year and the final project submission date is the following 28 th February. Local variations may apply and will be advertised on the BCS website Late or incomplete entries will not normally be accepted. Extended deadlines may be given to candidates who wish to apply to re-sit the examination in the module(s) offered at the October session where they have failed the same examination at the April/May sitting. The dates for submission of application forms will be sent out with results letters. In exceptional circumstances, at the discretion of the Client Services Manager, Higher Education Qualifications, a fee may be charged for processing such entries. Once applications have been processed, fees will not be refunded. 4. METHOD OF COMPLETION 4.1 SEQUENCE OF MODULES AND PROJECTS Modules may be taken in any sequence but candidates are strongly urged to read the accompanying Notes for Guidance and take account of any prior knowledge expected in the Syllabus. Notice should also be taken of the regulations for the award of certificates which are listed in Section 6. Professional Projects may be submitted before, during or after attempting the written examinations. 4.2 NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS There are no limits on the number of attempts a candidate may make to achieve a pass in any module or project. All entries must comply with regulation 3.1 and fees will be payable for each attempt. When a candidate has achieved a pass in a module or has passed a project assessment no further attempts in that module or project will be permitted. 4.3 ORAL EXAMINATION BCS reserves the right to require a candidate to undergo an oral examination following the sitting of an examination or the submission of a Professional Project. 5. PASS MARKS The pass mark for all modules is 40%. The pass grades for the Project (at both levels) are Pass, Credit or Distinction 6. AWARD OF CERTIFICATES Certificates will only be awarded to candidates who have taken and passed at least half of the qualifying modules for the awards of the Certificate in IT, Diploma in IT or Professional

Graduate Diploma in IT. Where a candidate has been exempted from more than half of the modules for any of these awards they will only receive a transcript. The award of certificates is further qualified as follows: The Diploma in IT will only be awarded to those candidates who have passed, or been exempted from the Certificate in IT and have passed the Diploma Examination and the Diploma Project. The Professional Graduate Diploma in IT will only be awarded to those candidates who have passed, or been exempted from the Certificate in IT, the Diploma Examination and have passed the Professional Graduate Diploma Examination and Professional Graduate Diploma Project. Certificates will list the modules passed and/or the appropriate modules for which exemption has been granted to gain the award. Certificates will also be issued on award of the Professional Project (Diploma or Professional Graduate Diploma level). On request, a modular certificate listing the individual module(s) passed will be issued. 7. FEES Fees will be payable for the following: Entry and re-entry to a written examination; Submission and resubmission of a Professional Project; Issue of a modular certificate. Fees are reviewed and published annually. All examination candidates must hold current membership of BCS. This is usually student grade. 8. MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES Any candidates who believe they have mitigating circumstances with regard to their examination performance must write to the Client Services Manager, Higher Education Qualifications within three weeks of the date of the affected examination explaining the circumstances. Appropriate supporting evidence e.g. a bona fide medical certificate must be included with the correspondence. 9. UNFAIR PRACTICE IN A WRITTEN EXAMINATION Candidates must not be in possession of any material not explicitly permitted during a written examination. Examples of material which will not be permitted include, but are not limited to: books, leaflets, paper of any kind apart from answer books issued in connection with the examination, devices with data storage or external connectivity e.g. PDAs, Anyone with a mobile phone in their possession during the examination may result in receiving a Zero mark Possession of such material during an examination will be considered a breach of regulations whether or not the candidate has used it. There will be provision in the

examination room for candidates to deposit such material before the start of the examination. Candidates must not, for any reason whatsoever, communicate with each other during a written examination. Candidates must at all times obey the instructions of the invigilator. 10. UNFAIR PRACTICE IN PROJECT SUBMISSION Any project submitted by a candidate must be their own work. Candidates should refer to the Notes for Guidance for further information. 11. USE OF CALCULATORS Non-programmable calculators only will be allowed in examinations as follows: Certificate in IT - None Diploma in IT - Computer Networks, IT Project Management Professional Graduate Diploma in IT - None Such calculators must be independently powered, silent and suitable for use on a desk. Calculators must NOT be capable of communicating with any other calculator, computer or information source such as the internet. They must not be capable of text storage, retrieval or manipulation, of language translation or retrieval of formulae. If a calculator has a memory then it must be cleared prior to the start of an examination. Instruction manuals or similar must not be brought into the examination room. Calculators shall be presented for inspection on request to any invigilator. 12. BREACH OF REGULATIONS BCS will take action against any candidate proven to have breached examination regulations. These matters will usually be dealt with by PEB. The sanctions available to PEB include the following singly or in combination: disqualification from the examination(s) or project in which the candidate has breached the regulations, Disqualification from the examination(s) or project in which the candidate has breached the regulations and from all other examinations/ project taken or submitted at the same sitting. Disallowing the candidate from enrolling to retake any examination or project in which they have been disqualified for a period up to one year Any disqualifications will appear on all subsequent transcripts and the maximum mark that may be recorded for the candidate in the modules where examination regulations have been proven to be breached will be a pass (40%). The appeals process and procedures set out the restrictions that will apply to a candidate enrolling to retake any examination or project assessment where there is a breach of regulations issue to be resolved through the appeals process. In cases where PEB Board does not consider it is empowered to deal with the breach i.e. where there is also considered to be a wider breach of the BCS Code of Conduct the Board will refer the offence to the BCS Investigations Panel. In such cases candidates will be subject to BCS disciplinary processes and procedures which may lead to a public

reprimand, suspension from the BCS or permanent expulsion. In these cases PEB will make recommendations to the Investigation Panel or Disciplinary Committee as appropriate with regard to appropriate academic sanctions that should apply to the candidate Where a case is referred to the Investigation Panel candidates will not be permitted to resit the examination(s) or project where they have been charged with breaching any regulations until the matter has been resolved. 13. APPEALS BCS operates an appeals system. Details are available from the Client Services Manager, Higher Education Qualifications.
