1 BCHH-C Recertification Handbook Purpose of Recertification NCBHH supports the professional development of its certificants. The required recertification process provides certificants with the opportunity to demonstrate enhancement of knowledge and skills. Recertification engages all certificants in ongoing professional development activities. To support this purpose, the recertification requirements suggest continuing education and professional activities that enhance ongoing professional development, recognize learning, and provide a process for both attaining and recording professional development achievements. The purpose of the NCBHH recertification program is for certificants to demonstrate continued competence in their profession through one of two pathways: Continuing Education The preferred pathway is for certificants to recertify by completing 18 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in the four domain areas covered by the certification exam over their three-year certification cycle. CEUs must be earned during the recertification cycle and must be relevant to the profession. Testing Certificants may recertify by re-testing on the current version of the certification exam in the third year of their certification cycle. The exam will incorporate regulatory and practice updates in all applicable domain areas. The certificant will be expected to achieve the passing score required of new certificants to recertify by test. Certification Lapse Certificants failing to recertify by the end of their certification cycle will be removed from the Certificant Registry and may no longer use their credential. Calculation of CEUs Continuing Education Units are calculated based upon clock hours of instruction or participation. 1 CEU is given for each 60-minutes of attendance or participation. Fractions of CEUs will not be granted.

2 Recertification Activities Educational programs of allied health and other relevant professional associations Educational portions of programs sponsored by organizations or vendors on topics that maintain, update, or enhance knowledge or skills relevant to the profession. Instructing or teaching a class on relevant professional material Webinar or teleseminar educational programs relevant to the profession. Institutional education programs attended for non-degree credit at colleges or universities. Non-Qualifying Activities Examples of activities that will not be accepted for Continuing Education Credit include: Completion of tasks falling within an individual s normal employment responsibilities Summarizing educational materials Publishing or presenting relevant materials developed for normal employment purposes Audits Each year a percentage of certificants recertification materials will be randomly selected for an audit. Individuals selected for audits will be notified in writing and required to submit documentation related to each activity on their CEU report. Documentation may include certificates of attendance, program outlines, or other information from the program sponsor verifying that program date, Recertification Fees Recertification fee of $150 must be submitted by the end of the certification cycle. Certificants can pay the recertification fee at Fees paid by credit card will be processed right away. 3 Uploading CEUs for Recertification After submitting their fees, certificants should upload their CEUs by logging into their account at the Fazzi Learning Center ( in the BCHH-C Recertification course. All CEUs uploaded should include title of education, date completed, number of hours, and certificate of completion. For information on accessing the Fazzi Learning Center, certificants may Certificants are encouraged to keep certificates of attendance and program materials on file for any activity they intend to submit for CEUs for at least 1 year following the completion of each recertification cycle. After submission, CEU materials will be reviewed and evaluated for approval. After review, certificants will be ed regarding their approval/recertification status. BCHH-C Domains A minimum of 10 CEUs must be earned in the Coding domain. A minimum of 1 CEUs must be earned in each of the other domains. The remaining 5 CEUs may be distributed at the discretion of the certificant. Topics in each domain may include, but are not limited to: Health Information Documentation Coding Electronic medical records management Health information software Privacy and security of health information Meaningful use Anatomy and physiology Coding convention updates ICD-10 OASIS Regulatory Compliance and Reimbursement HIPAA Legal compliance

4 Regulatory updates Purchase one seat to submit payment for the recertification of your BCHH-C credentials. Following your submission of payment, you will be able to upload your CEU evidence to the Learning Center for approval. Once approved, you will receive an notification with a copy of your renewal certificate and proof of your recertification on our BCHH-C verification website.
