2 SELECTED RECENT PROJECTS PROFESSIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCES Datacenter Circuit-Switching: This was a joint effort with folks from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Rice University, and Intel Labs at Pittsburgh in which the fundamental challenges in building hybrid electrical/optical datacenter networks are explored. We discuss both the problems that must be addressed to make these interconnects truly useful and the implications of these challenges on what solutions are likely to be ultimately feasible through proposing an observe-analyze-act framework. As an outcome of this effort, we published a paper in SOCC 11. Opportunity Cost: Lack of inventory at fulfillment centers close to the cities can be very expensive for Amazon.com especially upon fulfillment of fast-track orders. In this summer internship project, we investigate a potential solution to this problem through applying a so called opportunity cost when fulfilling any orders through these fulfillment centers. We implement and analyze the results of this approach. HELIOS: This work was done at UC San Diego. We built a fully functional prototype of a hybrid/electrical optical switch architecture for datacenters using commercial 10GigE packet switches and MEM-based optical circuit switches. I was involved in designing scheduling algorithms and developing a centralized topology manager which controls the routing path of the flows by changes the circuit mapping of circuit switches based on the traffic information received from switches. This project is developed in C++, Python and Linux shell scripts and is published in SIGCOMM 10. VIVALDI: How would TCP look like if it has information about the underlying wireless channel characteristic (e.g., wireless signal level, mac layer retransmission ratio, etc) at each time and could use that to adjust its rate? I was working on this project over a summer internship at Cisco Systems. The idea is to use cross layer optimization to improve the performance of wireless TCP connections. I was involved in developing a complete emulation framework to experiment and study the ideas further. This project is done with C, Python, and Linux bash script.
