Tier-2 structure in Poland R. Gokieli Institute for Nuclear Studies, Warsaw M. Witek Institute of Nuclear Physics, Cracow
Plan LHC experiments in Poland Tier-2 centers Current activities - SC3 Expectations from Tier-1.
LHC experiments LHC community of experimental physics located in two main places Warsaw CMS, LHCb, Alice University University of Technology Institute of Nuclear Studies Cracow ATLAS, LHCb, Alice Institute of Nuclear Physics University of Science and Technology Total of scientists and PhD students
Tier-2 centres Cracow CYFRONET Academic Computer Center Poznań PCSS Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center No local LHC community but LCG resources available. Warsaw ICM - Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling, Warsaw University Wide experience in GRID technology ICM+CYFRONET+PCSS form EGEE Regional Operations Centre for Central European Federation (Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia) Good cooperation of computing centres and local LHC community All three centers have rich research program.
Geography of Tier-2 centers Network based on PIONIER (Polish Academic Network) 10 Gb/s Poznan 1 Gb/s Warsaw GEANT 1 Gb/s Cracow
Cyfronet - Cracow Current LCG related resources 100 CPUs (Xeon GHz) CPUs comming soon (Xeon 3.0 GHz) Part of 40 TB disk array (50%) Part of 80 TB tape storage (30%) Participation in Data Challenges of ATLAS, LHCb, Alice Supports BELLE and ZEUS eperimental grid-like computing GRID projects 6WINIT, CROSSGRID, PELLUCID, GRIDSTART, PRO- ACCESS, EGEE, COREGRID, K-Wf Grid + national projects More at
PCSS - Poznań Current LCG related resources CPU: 100 Itanium, 2GB RAM/CPU + coming 120 CPUs Small amount od disk space now, 2-3 TB soon. Participation in Data Challenges of ALICE GRID projects CROSSGRID, GRIDLAB, GRIDSTART, EGEE, active in European and Global Grid Forum + national projects Operation center for polish academic network PIONIER More at
ICM - Warsaw Current LCG related resources CPU: 180 AMD Opteron 2.4 GHz, 2GB RAM/CPU) + coming 40 (AMD dual-core, 4GB RAM/CPU) A few TB available on all WN + coming ~10 TB disk array Participation in Data Challenges of CMS Grid projects EUROGRID, GRIP, CROSSGRID, EGEE, UNIGRIDS, ATVN- EU-GP + national projects More at
SC3/4 activities Polish centers were not selected initially as Tier-2 centers for SC3 Warsaw intends to join CMS part of SC3, CRACOW for ATLAS and LHCb will try also Work to build production system started (to be ready for SC4). Internal structure is being constructed now Dedicated private network Cracow-Poznan-Warsaw based on PIONIER 1Gb/s links LCG deployed dcache installation ongoing Extention to reach Tier-1 via a dedicated link? Needs coordination of both sides. Two possibilities: Pionier Geant DFN Pionier - DFN
Expectations from Tier-1? All 3 polish centers have wide experience in GRID technology they are able to cope with local installation and operation of LCG systems. Short term expectations Set up a dedicated LCG link Tier-1 polish Tier-2 network Instructions and assistance in configuration Tier-1 Tier-2 communications Long term expectations LCG TDR and computing models for LHC experiments define sizes of Tier0/1/2 centers and theirs relations. In particular: Tier-2 produces MC data and ships to Tier-1 for use by the whole collaboration. Tier-1 sends regularly AOD, Tag etc. to connected Tiers-2 Tier-2 accepts analysis jobs from the whole collaboration Tier-1 coordination of Tier-1 Tier-2 relations. Provided resources to be used by the whole collaboration.
Summary There are 3 Tier-2 centres in Poland: Cracow, Warsaw (with local LHC comunity) and Poznan (no LHC community) All centres have wide experience with GRID technology (including LCG) and will be able to fulfil all operational duties. Most of the relations between Tier-1 and Tier-2 centres are defined by LCG TDR and computing models of LHC experiments. Tiers-2 expect support from Tier-1 concerning Assistance in preparing production configuration before LCG startup (SC4) like network and services configuration (short term) Operational issues between Tier-1 and Tier-2 during LCG production phase (long term)
