1 FOUNDATIONS OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS MIS 2749 COURSE SYLLABUS Fall, 2013 Instructor s Name: Vicki Robertson vrobrtsn@memphis.edu Course Title and Description Foundations of Information Systems. (3 credit hours) This course is designed to introduce students to major concepts in business information systems. In addition students gain experience in working with Microsoft Office Applications for the purpose of performing business tasks to solve business problems. Extensive use of internet applications, electronic communication, and office applications will be required of the students. Catalog Description This course is an introduction to major concepts in business information systems, including computer hardware, software, networks, databases, the Internet, and electronic commerce with an emphasis on use of database and spreadsheet technologies to solve business problems. Texts Required A course pack of 4 items is available in the university book store. The publisher has given the bookstore a very good price for the pack. I believe you will get more for your money with this option, but you may decide that you do not need all of the items. If you purchase the bookstore package, you will have both a hard copy and an e-copy of the text. If you purchase these online, you can choose to have only one or the other or both. Also, if you purchase from the bookstore, you will have a registration code for MyItLab included in the pack, so don t throw this away. You ll need to bring it to class. If you purchase MyItLab online, be sure to get Office 2013 complete version. All of the work for that book is online at MyItLab. However, some people like to have a book to look at when they are working. Included in the pack at the bookstore are: 1. GO! with Microsoft Excel 2013 Comprehensive, Pearson Publishing (paper copy) 2. Technology in Action 10 th Edition Complete, Pearson Publishing (paper copy) 3. MyItLab Office 2013 Complete, Pearson Publishing Registration Code 4. A one-year trial version of Office (not necessary for the course) 5. ebook for GO! And Technology in Action The two textbooks can be purchased online at any of the book sales companies, including Pearson. YOU WILL NEED BOTH TEXTBOOKS. The MyItLab code can be purchased online when you register at the website. MIS 2749 Fall 2013 Page 1

Students will understand the difference in application and system software and will study various types of business, multimedia and entertainment software. Students will study the various types of mobile devices and the use of these devices in business. Students will gain an understanding of the career options for MIS majors. Students will strive to be better communicators and to maintain emotional control. Students will be evaluated in the following areas: Evaluation 1. *Exams 60% of grade There will be 5 exams during the semester. Each exam is worth 100 points. The average of these exams will be 60% of your grade. 2. Activities in MyItLab 20% of grade Technology in Action Textbook a. Assigned chapters should be read and all activities assigned by your instructor for that chapter should be completed. Activities will include End of Chapter Check Your Understanding tests; and may include Sound Byte Labs; Active Help Desk Calls; Discussion Boards, and IT Simulations as assigned by your professor. b. Students will have training and practice exams on MyItLab to complete throughout the semester. MIS 2749 Fall 2013 Page 2
3 3. PowerPoint Presentation 10% of grade Each student will create and present a PowerPoint presentation as assigned by the professor. 4. Additional Excel Problems 10% of grade Students will complete problems assigned by the Professor for credit. Some of these will be Grader projects on MyItLab; others will be Excel exercises provided in class. Specific due dates will be stated for some of the above activities. Failure to complete items before the due date will result in a lower number of points. It can be assumed that if no due date is specified, the work is due by the end of the week in which the assignment is made. ********* An optional comprehensive final covering the Technology in Action text materials and Excel can be substituted for a low grade on any of the five 100-point exams. No one has to take the comprehensive final it serves only to improve the grade or to make up for a test that was not taken. ********* *Certification Exam a. One of the 5 exams that each student will take is a Microsoft Office Specialist Exam for Excel If the student passes the exam at the required level, the student can earn a Microsoft Certification. Certification is not required for passing the course; this is only a portion of the grade. b. Students may take the Certification exam twice. The higher grade will be counted for the class. The exam must be taken at a certified testing agency. The University of Memphis is one such agency, so those of you in the area will take the exam on campus. For those of you out of the Memphis area, other agencies include New Horizons and other universities A = 90% or higher B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69% F = Less than 60% of total points Grading Scale The MIS Department does not give + (plus) or (minus) grades.
